Rise of the Triad is a success. What other old FPS should be revived?

I've longed to see Heretic II re-released on DD services. Acti owns the IP and the game was developed by Raven, so it's just a matter of ensuring modern system compatibility.

It's third person though. I loved Heretic II, need to find my disc and reinstall. Anyone know how it plays with Win 8?

I loved the game so much, my local ebgames had it for $.01 (that's a penny). I bought every copy, just out of obsession. Same thing happened with Sanity: Aiken's Artifact (is that how it's spelled?). Very underappreciated games.

It's kinda a FPRPG, but a remake of Wheel of Time would be nice. And Undying would be cool too.

After getting mercilessly sucked into HeXen II thanks to the quakecon sale - HeXen. I got so many ideas of how to approach it, but I do fear that it would end up in the wrong hands and Skyrim'd. Imagine giving it to someone like Arkane who could take their knowledge of hard hitting melee combat and then drown it in cocaine.

I'm the biggest Blood whore in this board, so it goes without saying that I'd lose my shit if Caleb raised from his grave. It was funny, it was inventive, it was gross, it was super creepy at times and basically blew my mind like no other FPS ever did. It's still Monolith's finest game and probably one of the best FPS in videogame history.

That said, I wouldn't mind a proper sequel to Dark Forces (proper as in not another cheap Star Wars cash-in, but a well planned, well crafted game within the SW universe) or (gasp) a good remake of Realms of the Haunting if the could find the way to keep the weirdness intact.

I'd also love a new SiN, but the sequel left me incredibly sour and I'm afraid Ritual is done for good :(

Those looking for some good candidates for revival (or just some plain old nostalgia) could take a look at this thread I created a long time ago. There are a few brilliant games in there.

I'd like a Hexen remake that is playable by today's standards - i.e. isn't comprised entirely of identi-mazes.

Don't get me wrong - I can't stand corridor shooters, but a middle ground between that and those horrible old mazes would be nice.

BONUS QUESTION: Would you want the game to keep it's original style or would you prefer it to go in a more modern direction?

For me the answer is easy. One word: Hexen. It's funny, in the rpg scene I'm a bit burnt out on the fantasy setting and would prefer sci-fi but the opposite is true for fps. A return to a dark fantasy fps would be very welcome in my opinion. Now as much as I'd love a true to the original experience, I think Hexen would be incredible if it followed the borderlands format. Now before you roll your eyes, think about it, an open world similar to what you would find in elder scrolls but gothic and with the ability to quest with others. Seeing as how Hexen is already in the fantasy setting, more rpg style character upgrade mechanics would be a really good fit.

Have at it gaf.

I think that DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D still deserve proper sequels... and, to answer your bonus question, no I would not want them to go in a modern FPS direction at least in terms of level design...

I loved Bethesda's Terminator Future Shock and SkyNET FPSes.
So ahead of their time. "Open world" with exporable buildings, jeep driving and H/K flying.

FarCry/Stalker-like games in Terminator universe? Bring it now.

Lets see... this is easy for me, I feel like these four deserve separate mentions :)

Unreal
Unreal tournament 2k4 (how about UT14 next year #nevergonnahappen)
Wolfenstein enemy territory
Return to castle wolfenstein

I know dirty bomb (splash damage - makers of W:ET) is being developed and is currently in alpha testing... so maybe we'll get something like W:ET/RTCW (I can't divulge due to NDA). We'll probably get UT4 sometime in a couple years I just hope UE4 is a substantial improvement over UE3.

And they should be made in line with the classics of course. Maybe a little update here and there for some modern feel. I just want to play a fast paced strafe hip shooter!

I was originally going to say Blood, as I loved the original game. However, going through the thread I'd now say that a Hexen reboot could be damned sweet...

Does Descent count? If so...

Descent

Back when it was new, we sort of needed more keys and buttons to control the ship in weightless 3D than we had. It could be made to work, but it was never straightforward. Now? Twin analog controllers are a standard, and that's exactly what a game like Descent needed back then. Well, we're still one axis short, actually, but it's better than being the axes short.

Just have good old Material Defender fly through mines filled with evil robots to blow up the main reactor and outrun the fireball like old times.

It's third person though.

Fine by me: I prefer Heretic II to the original.

Why we haven't got a remake or sequel at this point, when even the universally reviled 'Duke Nukem Forever' got made...we need scully and mulder on that one.

The long and short of it is that nobody knows who owns the rights to the IP. In all likelihood, they're buried at Acti somewhere (Fox Interactive -> Vivendi Games -> Acti-Blizz) as Monolith claims it doesn't know anything.

A million times this! Played the shit out of Descent 1 and 2 so much back in the day. I eventually got "Descent: The Definitive Collection" which included both Descent 1 and 2, plus their map packs. Awesome music that you could listen to outside of the game as well (the Descent 2 disc had enabled CD Audio).

What if I told you... something like this was closer than you thought?

Cybermage (FPS/RPG)

Realms of the Haunting (FPS/ADVENTURE). I'd like to keep the live action segments in digitally remastered form

RoboPlato

I'd be in the dick
SWAT
Dark Forces/Jedi Knight

I feel like both of these could be easily adapted for modern mechanics while staying very unique in the modern shooter market.

I hope everyone who said anything other then No One Live Forever has a terrible day, not too terrible mind but just bad enough for you to realise what you did wrong.

The thing about NOLF is that, apparently, nobody knows who owns the rights. As per this document, A Spy in HARM's Way and Contract JACK went with Monolith to WB, but the actual NOLF IP is presumably buried somewhere at Activision (Fox Interactive -> Vivendi Games -> Acti-Blizz).

Hexen would be great, but you just know they'd try and Skyrim it up.

My vote goes to Blood.

Yes, Blood. Pretty please.

Yeah that thread was awesome. It's still in my subscriptions.

Anyway, I want another one of these:

It has been 10 years since the last jedi knight game, 10 years witthout a star wars FPS, I didnt think that would be possible. we desperately need a new one.

as for the classic franchises, most of my beloved ones have received sequels, so I am actually quite happy. but I guess all of the other ones would do, I didnt like classic ROTT at all, but I found myself enjoying the new one.

All the great answers have already been mentioned.

I would love to see an new Unreal Tournament game though. Based on the first one, not the horrible UT3 or maybe even a sequel to Unreal Championship 2 even though that's not an FPS.

Heretic/Hexen would be the best, but...

THAT I would not want.

Blood would be nice too. It actually needs an enhanced version like DN3D and SW got, since there is no source port solution for it, making it a bit annoying to play on modern machines.

http://xlengine.com/blog/ it's a slowly progressing project to enhance several old games to run on modern systems including Blood.

Timesplitters seems like a perfect project from the team behind ROTT but Crytek are hoarding that IP and sitting on it :(

Remake of XIII and Duke Nukem 3D would be nice (DNF doesn't exist, shut up shut up shut up). Dark Forces and another SiN would be rad too
