Assassin's Creed Shadows needs an online connection to install on PS5

I remember some confusion about it being always online a while ago. As long as that isn't the case, I'll pick it up digitally when it's on a deep, deep sale like all the other AC games.

The disc being essentially a coaster without this online check is already one thing.

But the other thing is, how did Ubisoft manage to STILL get leaks of the full game while this check was in place? Not only did they fuck up preservation efforts, but even then they didn't use their DRM control to their advantage!

Absolute clownshoes company.

This should be simply illegal. If you can play the game offline, you shouldn't be forced to go online with a physical disc. This game is going to bomb anyways...
It should be illegal. But consumers need to fight back by not buying it.

That being said, this game is NOT going to bomb. After seeing gameplay recently it looks really good and fun. So I'll buy it in a year when the Gold Edition is 15€. Lol.

They do everything they can to make the game a failure.

Nobody was interested in buying the game cares about this, tbh.
Also, most of the sentiment I’ve seen about the game recently is quite positive. Seems the marketing is picking up.

I just refuse to buy games that do this shit. Ubisoft needs all the good will they can get; they last thing they should be doing is committing crimes against physical games.

Long live the D I S C

Ok, one person cares about this.

I have no verdict on if its good or bad but it would be cool to know the percentage of AAA games that are truly playable straight off the disc without requiring a one off activation or a day1 patch to not be a trainwreck.

I don’t really see how this is newsworthy because every single day one patch obviously requires Internet connection and I don’t believe there’s been a game in recent memory that simply booted up from a disc, immediately without needing to download some kind of update from the internet. This is just how games work now, in the modern era. Where day one patches and constant hot fixes are sent out, etc. after a game goes gold.

If you want to live in a reality in gaming, where you are not dependent upon connecting to the Internet, at least some of most of the time, in order to have your games play functionally, you need to go back to the GameCube era, quite honestly.

Almost every game will boot directly from the disc. Some Activision games are usually the exception.

Hate it, but I do wonder if this has something to do with UBISOFT’s fight against used game sales. This activation could let them track against shipped boxed sales. I am guessing the activation is not unique to a PlayStation right ?

Even fridges and washing machines need internet to work these days… What’s the issue? 🥱
I enjoy shitting on people who complain about the need for internet connection as much as the next person with a phone. However, those are horrible examples. None of those appliances need internet to work for its base functionality to function.

The idea of buying a new game today in 2025, and expecting to install it from disc and then start playing with no patch... I feel like I must be missing something here.

Right, I should clarify I’m not talking about booting from the disc. I’m saying the system automatically downloading an update when it detects that the game disc is in the tray, because the disc version is outdated already. Which is always the case because the version on the disc is weeks/months old. And games nowadays are constantly updated all the time.

This. Like I said previously, you have to go back to like the PS2 and GameCube era if you’re trying to for whatever reason avoid needing regular updates to all of your game library.

We have to deal with 1st time online connection on PC since Half-Life 2 was released and since then....

It's shitty that they're not selling working offline builds though, which is not good for preservation.

it's different on pc.
On steam you control your files, cracks, copies, whatever you want.
On console, the disc is the only resemblance of control.
The online activation means that there will be no way to play v1.0 in the future straight off the disc

I know that, that's why I mentioned game preservation which won't be possible unless they'll release complete version at some point with all the patches and DLCs.
