Batman v. Superman RT Thread: like standing ovations in rain

so what are the chances of this thing joining the billion dollar club?

I'd say most definitely. It has Batman and Superman; 2 very well known superheroes. If this movie is released in China, then it will earn at least 1 Billion dollars. Word of mouth won't hurt in China as much.

Word of mouth could seriously hurt this film. Next weekend could see a huge drop from the opening depending on the general audience reception. Domestically his movie could be in bad shape although the international box office territories such as China may help it out.

Really sounds like a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation.

That was a chief complaint in MoS, now a segment of people are upset that he addressed it.

There were many ways to address the problem. Having the final battle take place among scores of Conveniently Empty Buildings was not one of them.

Because if you do it, you have to do it and embrace it. He's trying to make a self-serious superhero movie that pontificates on the morality and existential realities of life with a literal god parading about in his underwear fighting badguys, while also trying to dissuade any criticism for the same thing he was criticized for last time. If you're going to make the movie into a bloated mess that tries to speak to the realities of heroism and the profound consequences of the act itself, then you can't take the lazy way out and have people constantly say "good thing nobody lives there" to give yourself a get out of jail free card.

Hell the plot of this is based around the fact that Superman killed a shitload of people, so you can't make the wanton violence and callous destruction of MoS into a mis-step that you later rectify, if you're going to also make said death and destruction into the BACKBONE OF YOUR ENTIRE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE.

It's talking out of both sides of your mouth.

I enjoyed this review:

Here's a snippet:

"A fun thing you could do during the two and a half hours you spend watching Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is count the number of times some rando blurts out something like “It’s uninhabited!” or “It’s after five, so downtown’s nearly empty right now!” whilst Batman and/or Superman throw various bad guys (and/or each other) through various walls. No civilians were harmed in the making of this loud, droning, incoherent, and bonkers deadly serious film, in sharp contrast to 2013's Man of Steel, wherein Superman spends the last half hour bonking giant buildings full of innocent people together until they explode. "
This is the first thing I've read about this movie that gives me a red flag

I have no problem with comic movies being dumb and violent for the sake of spectacle but fuuuuuck that's a cop out.

Don't care about reviews too much and I still want to see it but bleh. I'm sure I'll enjoy it because I enjoy Zack Snyder's stuff (despite them apparently not living up to the high art that is the MCU lol)

Very high. The last Batman film made $1.1B four years without 3D, and while that was riding the Nolan train, that really should be the target for this considering its building up the entire DCEU.

Given what's on the line here, heads will roll at WB if this fails to break $1B worldwide.

But no better than Divergent.

Shailene Woodley to be cast as Wonderman on the next instalment.

I want to see this scene with her in a WW costume now lol

That's some hyperbole if I've ever seen. There are far worst comic book movies, let alone movies in general.

So you're basically saying how I should feel about this garbage and what should I write?

I'm so goddman sorry. Now that you say it, I think it's the most fabulous of movies, a true masterpiece, a unicorn of our time, an endless galaxy of rainbows and cute kittens, the one true God almighty of pure mightiness, a perfect cheeseburger. It also had one of the best scripts in any movie and the best actors ever to brace the viewers eyes. And it smelled of roses. BvS 4eva! Team Wonder Superbat!

How the fuck an opinion is hyperbole? Riddle me that.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Who calls Marvel's stuff high art? They are enjoyable popcorn movies.

I think there's very little chance of this making a billion dollars WW with this hanging over it, It probably will hit around 800M.

That's not what the review is saying. It's saying that the movie is hypocritical because those complaints were not really addressed; but instead are part of a collective of contradictory and nonsensical parts of the movie.

Yup. I actually remember an Emma Stone a tweet from back then where she said she could see Andrew and Shailene kissing. Now, at the time Andrew and Emma dated (and maybe still do?). The dumb press took it as if she discovered he was cheating on her. I remember my sister telling my mom that "news" as if it were the truth and I ended up arguing with my sister that it was a joke tweet and that Emma was simply watching a scene from the movie being filmed. I think this was, however, an issue the studio probably wasn't thrilled with, as it sort of confirmed what Gwen's fate would be in the movie.

I mean, I've heard some strange people call TWS a "Political Thriller", which makes me assume they've never seen a real political thriller in their lives, but other than that I don't see MCU films winning Oscars for Best Supporting Actor and getting nominated for Best Picture.

All these are actually fun movies. I enjoyed them all.

TF 4 was ass. Pure Ass.

TF3 was shit except for the final battle.

Why are you and others getting so worked up over a movie?

Y'all over here thriving on negativity, like some of you enjoy it. I mean the dogpile is real in here.

Why do these opinionated post always come with such matching avatars?

For all the faults that game had, that was a genuinely brilliant mechanic, at least conceptually.

I hope the inevitable next Superman game has something similar.

If it were an adaptation of Man of Steel, the hypothetical game wouldn't fault you for Metropolis being destroyed and every major boss battle would end with a fatal finishing move for Superman to perform.

Tdk wasn't nominated for best picture.

You guys read this Walter Chaw review?

You should read this Walter Chaw review. I'm hit & miss on the guy (he's basically the kind of critic Faraci seems to be clawing towards when he overreaches like he does) but while this thing is long, and takes diversion after diversion, he hits on some pretty fucking interesting thoughts regarding Snyder's interpretation of these characters, and the reason this film might resonate with audiences even though the criticisms are all on point:

There's a lot more at the link, but holy shit what a review. It's fucking fascinating to read.

edit: Inferno, you dog! You beat me!

wtf?

It shows a series of Polaroid snapshots of a beloved character, gagged and terrified with terrible things written on her forehead

that shits in the movie?

I'm assuming it's the
killing joke stuff that has been kind of hinted?

This is a movie that doesn't encourage a second viewing but would probably benefit from one. I don't plan on ever seeing it again though.

I don't think you'll see them winning Razzies either.

TWS was Marvel's spin on a political thriller, but people still want to see shit blow up.

for real though, would anything have ever pleased you about this movie

You're not actually addressing the issue.

Snyder wasn't trying to make amends for the issue, he was backhandidly insulting people by being so overtly heavy handed with it. "See, nobody there now shut up and watch my murder porn".

LMAO, that is what the Ocean Group English dub of DBZ did.

Sorry, but I don't think he is anywhere NEAR that clever.

I don't think you'll see them winning Razzies either.

Well, IMO Iron Man 2 at the very least deserved a Nom (thought of course The Last Airbender still deserved the win, no question).

Why are some people calling other people's opinions and thoughts hyperbole?

I got disappointed with BvS. I got negative emotions from it. It'll pass in few days, but for now I just want to warn people about this piece of flaming garbage. It should be buried in the same place where Green Lantern, Man of Steel and such are now.

Comic books are serious business! :)

Now now, I do believe it was better than Green Lantern.

Whether it's actually better than Man of Steel or not is up for debate and probably depends on how much Batman can save the film for ya. It was certainly busier than MoS.

I fucking loved it, better than most of Marvel's stuff. Girlfriend wasn't into it, mostly because of Batman and Hollywood stuff.

Go watch it, review is just someone's opinion.
