Capcom just doesn't seem... cool anymore.

Ok, I know the title is a stretch (were they ever *reeeeally cool?*) but hear me out:

I've been exacerbated recently, like many of you, in reaction to all of the new content rolling out for Street Fighter 5 missing the mark. The new characters are blah, the music is completely generic, and the game is still missing some major features. But what really bugs me about this new Street Fighter is just how... uncool it feels.

I was not a big fan of Street Fighter 2 back in the day. I played it on and off on Super Nintendo, but the graphics and characters didn't really grab my attention. It wasn't until much later- Marvel vs Capcom 2 to be exact, that I really started paying attention. One major element that set SF2 apart from MVC2 for me, though, was in its presentation and music.

Though dated to most today, the fusion soundtrack and crazy presentation immediately lept out at me. It just felt so different. Perhaps it was because fighting games were on the decline in popularity that Capcom felt the need to take so many chances with their series, injecting strange characters and constantly changing up the music, but it gave those games a serious edge in presentation over their competition.

In other words it felt 'cool'- at least to this small town farm boy.

Then you look at that particular game's contemporaries, like Street Fighter 3 and Capcom VS Snk 2. These tracks just are simply more fun, and more hype, than the current OSTs.

And that's just the music. Comparing the current Street Fighter and MVC art styles to their past games also showcases just how far they've fallen. SF3 has the GOAT cast, but even ignoring that not everyone loves the departure from the World Warriors how did we go from the classy simplicity of this:

to these over designed monsters:

Everything got bigger, more serious, and more cringy. The music is distorted electronic with no soul, the game is a muddled mess of design and UX, and the story is awful. Plus, it seems that in transitioning to 3D, Capcom felt it necessary to also blow everything up to 11 and forget the classic design philosophies that used to direct their sprite work.

Frankly, at this point I think Capcom has lost the plot. They don't know what makes Street Fighter cool outside of the name Street Fighter. They lean on the worst of the series' elements and aren't taking any more chances with character or identity.

There's a genuine hole in the 2D space for a game like Street Fighter 3 or Capcom VS Snk2 but Capcom has felt the need to push for simpler, stupider games. Fanservice heavy costumes and F2P elements feel desperate when Capcom should have been reclaiming their throne and creating a polished, hip title that actually resonated with people outside of loyalty to Guile and Dhalsim. Their new titles just don't make me want to sit down in play or get invested outside of a desire to compete in the newest fighting game arena.

So I ask you, Neogaf, why is that? Am I just imagining things? Have fighting games ever been cool? Am I cool?

SFV and the other 3D ones weren't made by Capcom. MVCI is the first internally developed one in awhile which might help explain that...though the jump to 3D and 3D renders instead of cool 2D art also hurts

street fighter v has a ton of problems but the game feels so hollow compared to previous titles. rashid is the only stand out character and the redesigns of older characters are god awful.

....Juri is overdesigned?

Necalli????

I do like the above characters better than the ones on the bottom, but overdesigned is not what I would call them. I'd go as far as to say that they're kinda generic. Juri was a bit better in SFIV too

In 2000 this would be a thread about how SF3 lost the plot with its monster characters and music that wasn't as iconic as the SF2 themes. If we're speaking to SF specifically I find it's SF4 that was the soulless husk of the series, I find 5 to be a considerable stylistic step up.

They brought back one of the coolest characters from the dead - Charlie, and fucked that up in the story too.

Honestly I think they're letting the management/marketing make too many design decisions. I don't personally have a problem with a lot of the ideas behind SFV, but they very easily turn things around and stubbornly refuse not to. Hire me Capcom.

anyone who, back in the day did not think SF2 was mindblowing just has no barometer of what is cool or not, sorry

They are even better designed. SF V is an evolved style from 4 which I thought at the time was pinnacle. You should be grateful because Tekken and DOA had messed up on character bodies and faces for a more western approach. Meanwhile SF is one of the few Japanese games that feels modern Manga next to Zelda Breath of The Wild.

I was actually shocked at how little any of that mattered in the story. It felt like satire.

Also I don't find Juri over designed, but I prefer her design from IV over V.

Hmmm...Juri is not overdesigned, she has a very clear silhouette and specific color usage and nothing seems like an unnecessary trinket, (a consequence of the fact that she wears so little), the issue is more that she's oversexualized/edgy to an absurd degree. AT best, her design is insanely gaudy.

Nicali too, not only is this generic and boring, it also happens to be gaudy due to all the effects, scars, and other bullshit.

.......

You know what, gaudy is just an accurate description of SFV's cast in general.

And yet people still scream and shout for Devil May Cry 5...

And I like Capcom but they gotta restructure and do games better.

They were so good for most of last gen...

Between the on-disc DLC, the gems for SFxTK, the fucked balance for almost the entirety of SF4, the direction they took the Resident Evil franchise and what they did to the Lost Planet franchise, I'm not so sure.

Also never forget DmC: "FUCK YOU" and "I have a bigger dick".

They are poor they can't compete on the level of other companies. Wait till they get bought out.

-The Street Fighter V character models and art direction is in my opinion really great (I know some people hate it). The music is great in SFV. They not only remade tracks they also created a ton of new ones. Some real misses with Juri's theme though. The 2D drawings are abysmal.

-Resident Evil 7 was really great too. The photogrammetry they used in that game was really well done and innovative. They are still really pushing themselves art wise.

I wonder what people will think of them a week from now.

(no, I don't know anything, I just expect at least one major E3 announcement from them, most likely at the Sony conference)

First, you start by saying "cool" but you are only talking about music and character design in SF games.

Second, you're getting old.

Third, SF is only a piece of Capcom's output, an important piece but not even the biggest.

Fourth, to me SF still looks very funny and not serious at all. It's actually the western players that want serious business FG and complain, but not even MK is very serious, it's cheesy and quite self aware. Maybe Injustice is trying to be more serious but I don't have much experience with the series.

You're right, but it ain't black and white.

The Alphas and 3rd Strike had lots of style, but even 3rd Strike had out of place knockoffs like Twelve.

SFIV and SFV have been stylistic mixed bags, and I think it's because of Ono. He's lovable, but corny.

SFV has some of my favorite character designs (Juri's dope, you buggin) and some of my least favorite in the series (Ed's default is trash). Likewise for the music. Karin's theme is what I wish the whole soundtrack sounded like, Necalli's theme is melodramatic and boring as hell.

Storywise, they need to bring it back down to earth and back away from the GI Joe world domination plots.

I mean, if Capcom were to do an RE7 style reboot with DMC and make it like the first game with more emphasis on just a tinge of horror, exploration and puzzle elements, minus the creepy mom clone romance, I'd be pretty down for that. Seems all of their franchises currently need a RE7 style goingbacktotheroots™ game to reinject new life and help them move forward.

I did say most. A lot of that bad shit starting coming around the end like the examples you posted. They were on fire for a lot of the gen with things like Dead Rising, RE5, SF4, Marvel 3, DMC4, etc. Then they got greedy and tried to westernize their core franchises and their shitty dlc practices came as well.
