Capcom just doesn't seem... cool anymore.

While you could make a strong case that Capcom has lost it's sheen or "edge" if you will when it comes to their attitude and personality as far as their games go (and I would likely agree), Juri is perhaps the worst example you could pick out of a hat to prove the point. In a series that has never managed to live Street Fighter 2 down, where most of the mainstream's knowledge of the series' signature character roster begins and ends with whoever appeared in SF2, Juri is probably the only memorable design that Capcom made for the franchise in over a decade and a half. While just about every newcomer in SFIV and V felt throwaway (with the exception of maybe C. Viper who had somewhat of a shelf life for a while), Juri feels incredibly distinct and is probably the one home run they've had in recent history.

I wish there existed a version of Street Fighter 3 with her in it. She'd fit in swimmingly.

F.A.N.G. is the worst Street Fighter character in a looooooong time.
Absolutely cannot fathom what they were thinking.

FANG and Rashid are Street Fighter as fuck, everything the series stands for when it comes to character designs. Much more Street Fighter than some of wacky characters in 3

In 2000 this would be a thread about how SF3 lost the plot with its monster characters and music that wasn't as iconic as the SF2 themes.
I was gonna say.

Opinions and all. 15 years from now, when somebody's playing SFVII and maining a new character who is a Chinese goth kid or some shit, we're gonna be talking about the simplicity and effectiveness of Necalli's design.

Fuck Necalli tho.

New stuff? FUCK THAT, I want every new fighting game ever to have the exact same characters with the exact same costumes with the exact same moves.

Experimentation? GET THAT SHIT OUT OF MY VIDEO GAMES.
If you are a fan of 70s kung-fu flicks, FANG's design is dope (until you hear his voice).
The voice is what makes him Street Fighter, else he'd be too cool for the series.

I think you encapsulated why I wanted more Darkstalkers and less Street Fighter as the years progressed.

I wish they'd look at what made their older games enjoyable to fans, like Power Stone, Breath of Fire, DMC. Quirky games with fun gameplay was their thing.

This guy gets it. I honestly don't get the F.A.N.G hate from a design perspective, & they basically nailed Rashid (from his gameplay to even his story arc).

It's probably my biggest issue with SFV. The design direction. For want of a better term. 3rd Strike and CvS2 nailed it imo. As did IV to an extent. But V.. Even the little things. Menu music, the announcer. It just feels like it misses the mark of what it used to be, or that perhaps every iteration up til now reinvented itself successfuly, but this one didn't for some reason. I genuinely think it benefitted from being released in arcade first, as it did have an affect on design choices to an extent. I guess if I was to sum my thoughts up, it doesn't have as much 'style' as it used to.

You mean Street Fighter isn't cool anymore, considering what's in the OP

Also Juri and Necalli are fine. Really missed opportunity to post a pic of Ed in his default costume.

Rashid is the only good new street fighter character from a design standpoint, since C.Viper.

They should get rid of those muscle designs in Street Fighter... They look horrible imo >_<

We need Monster Hunter on PS4/Switch/Xbox, no more exclusive only please...

Where's Megaman X9? or even a reboot on the series, done right...

Get rid of these 8 bit megamans ffs, they look horrible... if I want to play them, I either emulate or play on my old systems/smartphone...

And OMG, where's DMC 5? Onimusha? I facking miss Onimusha =(

They're past their prime, like most really old developer/publishers. Maybe that will change in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

yeah SFV does feel a bit lifeless on that end. Especially the announcer. How the fuck did they pick the most boring direction ever for the announcer?

?

I think from the examples given, Juri is by far the coolest. The first two are too simple and plain imo (while I do like the first one).

You know, I was almost entirely focused on Fighting games when I made this thread, but it's funny you put MHX up there because it is another example of taking a simple, cool idea and then making it a complicated mess. I am not a fan of the new hunting styles system in that game and would rather they spend time improving their old systems instead of trying to make the game faster and more action heavy.

Juri is awesome.

SF3 has some godawful and/or lazy character designs as well.
Sean, Gill, and Alex are really dull.
Last SF that had an all around good character design was Alpha 2.

ShirAhava

Plays with kids toys, in the adult gaming world
Modern Capcom games are generic and uninteresting (Dragon's Dogma bleh)

P.N.03 was the last one I really liked.

.......Bruh.

Let me guess, you think Urien, Ibuki, & Dudley are god-awful designs, too?

They've been around since forever, it's basically synonymous to Street Fighter at this point.

You're right. It's like they use voice acting to intentionally take characters down a couple cool notches (FANG, Laura, Balrog, etc.). They let Karin be smooth as hell, tho.

On the whole, Japanese pop art in the 80s/90s was better than in the 2000s onward (super-broad generalizations yo!), which i think you see reflected here. Anime then was still very stylized, but in a way that was grittier and more angular, whereas after the 2000s design shifted to being curvier and more colorful.

Compare Dragonball/Z to Dragonball Super. Same characters, same "creator" who controls overall design, but you get a much different look.

SFV wasn't made on house, but the designs are top notch, their rest of games are so good imho

Well Dragon's Dogma Online hasn't been relased in the West, so that's pretty uncool.

Hmmm...Juri is not overdesigned, she has a very clear silhouette and specific color usage and nothing seems like an unnecessary trinket, (a consequence of the fact that she wears so little), the issue is more that she's oversexualized/edgy to an absurd degree. AT best, her design is insanely gaudy.
It's a Street Fighter game. That's not an issue, that's a feature.

I'm very happy as a Resident Evil fan. I also would say wait to see what they do for E3 since I'm sure they'll have announcements this year.

It's a revamp well needed imho, the game is very slowpaced and after so many sequels, you need to speed up things a bit, I personally like the new systems but I do agree some of the old systems need some work. But regardless that, Capcom designs are still very cool in my opinion. Even the stuff in Lost Planet 2 was amazing

Nicali too, not only is this generic and boring, it also happens to be gaudy due to all the effects, scars, and other bullshit.

.......

You know what, gaudy is just an accurate description of SFV's cast in general.

I feel like gaudy falls under the umbrella of over designed.

Gaudy: extravagantly bright or showy, typically so as to be tasteless.

Also, I stand by my Juri comments: She's got stupid toe holes, a dumb looking leather suit, and she still has stupid hair but somehow they made it pointier and worse in this version than in SF4.

Um play Injustice for the most boring announcer in fighting game history.
