To say I'm disappointed in tonight's result would be an understatement, but I guess I can take solace in the fact that Harper is both done as PM and as leader of the CPC.

But yeah, I'm never voting in a Federal election ever again.

Does this guy have any political chops or is he just a famous son? Serious question.

It may seem to be the latter initially, but the fact that he took the party from a position of being behind to coming out in number one by a signifcant margin seems to indicate he does have political ability.

Why would disappointment cause you to NOT vote? That's, like, completely backward.

Canadians burned my passport
I think the NDP needs to learn to stop pivoting to the centre. The Ontario NDP did the same thing last election to similar results. They should have committed towards a deficit too. I think Canadians are so used to hearing politicians claiming that they'll balance the budget, that to hear someone say something different really look them by surprise. As it wasn't the usual empty promise statement, it made the Liberals seem like they did have a real economic plan.

Voting is essential. Don't let the results of tonight prevent you from voting in the next Federal election.

Anyway, glad that Harper is gone with the Conservatives.

Not really...

Harper and Obama did not get along at all.

Nah, Harper would fit right in with the Republicans.

Yeah, you guys are right, Harper is super terrible, and Obama is pretty rad.

No, Harper Blue Tories are as conservative as American neocons, you're thinking of Red Tories, and Blue Tories make up most of Harper's conservatives.

I don't see Democrats in the US resorting to dog whistle racism and turning the country into a fascist police state.

This is probably what I was thinking.

I think it'd be in Justin's best interest to remind everyone he never could even attempt to surpass his Dad's swag and then just say he's getting on to business

I mean really...

So I'm reading the Wikipedia article on Trudeaumania and

Trudeaumania was the nickname given in early 1968 to the excitement generated by Pierre Trudeau's entry into the leadership race of the Liberal Party of Canada. Trudeaumania continued during the subsequent federal election campaign and during Trudeau's early years as Prime Minister of Canada.

Many young people in Canada at this time, especially young women, were influenced by the 1960s counterculture and identified with Trudeau, an energetic nonconformist who was relatively young. They were dazzled by his "charm and good looks", and a large fan base was established throughout the country.

Hellloooooooooo.....

I'm still learning about Canadian politics, and I'm probably arriving at Vancouver next January as a transfer employee.

Should I expect better policies for immigration / citizenship? What's Trudeau take on it?

Hopefully politicians in Australia who don't want to do anything on climate change will no longer be able to say "Canada tho...."

Justin may not have the brains, ability or accomplishments of Pierre, but I am pretty certain he has a better body.

Honestly? Probably the same, or very similar, to what it is now. Where are you moving from?

When you know your vote doesn't matter, what's the point though? I'm better off using my ballot as kindling to light a cigar. lol

The NDP lost the seats they did because the essential narrative of this election was "stop Harper", and the Liberals had a much better lean on ensuring that.

Things would be a bit better for the NDP if that weren't the case.

Disappointed there was still so much blue in Calgary. After the provincial election I figured we would see more change federally but I guess not. Two ridings may go liberal, mine could have been close, more voted Liberal and NDP than CONS.. bah. I did my part, (Liberal)

Very happy Justin is our new PM, hopefully the Liberals use their power for good.

Yes, and for a while the NDP were set up as the viable choice to stop Harper. Then they decided to try to pander to Quebec and just failed on all accounts. They even came out against the TPP as a last desperate move to try to keep unions on board with them as the election closed. They went from mid 30s in polling numbers to 18 on election night.

I'm sure political science students will be studying this as one of the biggest blunders in Canadian electoral history.

Possibly, I just don't see the NDP as politically irrelevant or this election as a return to the days of only two viable parties.

Even with those blunders, if the narrative of this election were different they would have had a lot more votes and probably at least a dozen more seats.

The NDP couldn't even hold their seats in Quebec to force a Liberal minority. They bled everywhere and had absolutely no base. They even lost their biggest seats in Toronto, not to mention almost every single star politician in the caucus. To say it was a bloodletting is an understatement.

How do you know this?
Because the natural opposition to the Liberals is the CPC, and by either 2019 or 2024, the CPC will be a viable alternative to the Liberals again.

I know someone asked on the last page, but I have to clarify (as an Australian), "Liberal" means left(ish) wing over there, yes? Because over here, you vote Liberal you get this dipshit:

If I'm right, then congratulations Canada! So jelly.

Our Liberal is your Labour.
Our Conservatives (Tory) is your Liberal/Coalition.

But more specifically, our Liberal is your right-wing part of Labour. Our NDP is like the Bill Shorten side of Labour.

Yes, just a tad to the left..

I feel guilty for not being more up-to-date with Canadian politics. I know more about British politics than Canada yet they live right next door.
