Not in love with the visuals unlike some, in fact kinda actively dislike them. It's a bit try-hard and cluttered for my tastes.

The "AAA production values" comments are far too often attributed to flashy-looking indies from teams who have a wealth of artistic talent over anything else. There's a lot more to top tier production than pretty visuals and fx. Not saying this will be the same, but seen far too many lipstick-on-a-pig games to not get carried away.

It's not just the egregious DoF and visual effects dialled up to 11, when you add in that horrific ADHD camera, urgh, it's not convincing me of anything other than maybe a desire to disguise what's lacking. then there's the fact that an eye-poking veneer of "exciting" can easily end up fatiguing over a 30-60 hour game. Press A for Awesome was already played out the gen before last, QTE is a big red flag of where this game sits in terms of mechanics.

What I see is a small team with a wealth of artistic/graphical talent working to their strengths, and that's fine. Good luck to them. It just doesn't look like something to get all foamy over as some people seem to be doing. My best guess is it lands in the high 60s/low 70s; some will say that'd be fine for what it is and I'd agree. Hope it actually fares far better for all those aroused by the visuals tingling their balls and those who give a shit about review aggregator totals like they actually mean anything, but not seeing it from this showing.

I wonder how the chud brigade will deal with the fact that two of the female leads are heavily tattooed (what with that being a cardinal sin in their weeb-infested eyes).

Actually, I don't think I need to wonder.

The only turn based games i have ever played are FF7 and Child of Light. This will be the third. It looks absolutely phenomenal.

I'm not sold on this game yet. It looks a bit rough and unrefined. The facial animations are poor as well. But maybe I'll be completely wrong about it. At least it's coming to Gamepass so I can try it out for not too much money if I want.

Can we just talk about the game? Not silly pointless left vs right chud vs wokey clown nonsense? Seriously how did you even come up with that shit from this game of all games? Obsessed.

Overall, it looks very promising.

The damage counters are a bit jarring. They look like they'd be better off in Jet Set Radio.

The facial animations are all over the shop, and the hair animations are particularly rough.

Also, one of the female faces looks a bit butch in places. Just not what I want to be looking at.

Game looks interesting, but considering my backlog from last couple of years and more games coming out this year (KCD2 will take me like 3 months to finish, not to mention getting back into FFVII Rebirth, lol) … chance of me playing the game is low :(.

Well, on my end, the game clears my "no deliberately uglifying women and passing it as an artistic decision" skill check (which a lot of recent games fail ignominiously). But there are people out there who quite loudly tout the "no tattooed femchars" thing.

More on-topic, the skill trees are fukken massive, wew. Definitely not enough Lumina points to become a generalist, need to specialize in a handful feats/abilities.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
What kind of turn based is this?

Turn based but you can get bonus damage or defend enemy attacks by match timing the prompts on screen.

If you've played the Shadow Hearts games, it's kinda like that.

It wasn't on my radar prior to the Direct, so definitely a good showing for me.
Hopefully they can pull it off with such a small team with a relatively small development time (given the size of the team).
Same, i was really not interested in the game but the Direct changed my mind. I especially like the many ways to customize your character and the world map.

They are an indie studio of 30 people, it isn't going to look like Final Fantasy XVI.

This was one of only a few reveals last year that I thought looked good. Still looks awesome. Day one unless previews or early reviews say otherwise.

Looks real interesting. Also, it's one of the few games where heroes get all muddy and dirty. In so many other games they keep looking like fresh out of shower with perfect styled hair and ironed clothes.

I love everything about this game except for the voice acting, for some reason, even though Charlie Cox and other quite good actors are in there. I feel like the directing is kind of off, is it just me? Maybe playing with the French dub would be a better choice, in this case (or even a Japanese one if it’s available).

In Final Fantasy comparison, which FF it resembles? (the combat)
(I never played Shadow Hearts)

It looks awesome but showing Playstation footage in a Xbox Direct? Cmon now, Phil doesnt give a fuck anymore.

I never play turn-based games, i did try with Yakuza 7 and had some good 50 hours, so i think i will give this a shot and hopefully the combat is accessible and not to complicated. The world, characters and environments looks awesome.

When I first saw the game, the first thing came to my mind was "Why didn't we see more of turn based RPG games aside from Japanese developers". Lots of JRPG's use real time combat, so we probably should have seen lots of Persona style combat from western side as well.

Hope the game will be a huge success.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
"Why didn't we see more of turn based RPG games aside from Japanese developers"
There are loads but they tend to go for a strategic approach with movement, whether freeform or on a grid, rather than this JRPG format. Ie, Shadowrun, Baldur's Gate 3, Divinity: Original Sin, Mutant Year Zero, etc. (to not name the older classics, from Fallout to the Gold Box and Spiderweb games).

But there are various JRPG-style western games too, from Anachronox, Cosmic Star Heroine, Undertale and Pier Solar to Bug Fables or Pokemon and Earthbound wannabes, there was a LOTR JRPG and the somewhat prominent South Park games, it's not uncommon. And Action JRPG like Cross Code.

I am a bit confused about the name. Is this adapted from something or are they hoping to turn this into a franchise or something? Who or what is a

Clair Obscur?

"Clair" means "clear or bright," and "obscur" means "dark or incomprehensible." So, "clair obscur" is an oxymoron of sorts - a reference to both clarity and obscurity, light and dark.

It's deep, man.

Music and Art direction is fantastic. The biomes all look like they came out of paintings in motion and the plot premise is very intriguing. Lots of uncertainty and existentialism in a world that is altered or repainted every year. This one is gonna be special.

Lots of surreal atmospheric vibes.
