I was actually rather skeptical about this game. That, plus all the talk about EA butchering one of classic literatures or EA just copycating and riding the success of GOW series. Basically I was in the anti-Dante's Inferno camp.
But after GOW3 I need something to satisfy my action game addiction. I'm a one-genre kinda gamer, action or action-adventure genre.
So I ended buying this game for the long weekend. To my surprise the game is really good! The combat is a lot of fun
Pros
- Enemies are fun to fight, they're challenging, they don't die after one hit, but they are not frustratingly difficult.
- There's balance between melee and range attack. I mean you have to know when it's good to go melee and when it's good to hop around and do range attack
- Decent amount platforming, it's enough to pace the game so that you're not fatigue with combat.
- The levels or environments, though gory and gruesome, theý are actually high quality, lots of details, detailed texture, etc
- Though the presentation is not as up to par to GOW3 (but what other game is???) it's still very high quality
- Riding beasts is a lot of fun
Cons
- Only 1 weapon. Though it does have a lot of moves and you can actually do a nice combo with it.
I would say the combat is a combination of DMC and GOW3. It's a hell lot better than GOW1 and 2. But it's on par to GOW3.
As a hack and slach freak, I just have to rank the combat, and it goes like this
1. NG franchise
2. DMC franchise
3. GOW3 and Dante's Inferno
Edit; one more thing, the controller vibration is really awesome in Dante's Inferno, you can actually feel the power of th scythe and the range attack.
More edit:
There are many free-form/movement combats in this game. Most of bosses and sub-bosses are one-on-one, mano-a-mano kinda fights. Most of the bosses are slightly bigger than human size, so there's a free movement in the fight.
