Digital Foundry: Assassin's Creed Shadows - PS5/Series X/S Tech Review - A Big Visual Leap For the Series

yeah, i have no idea why they didn't used avatar\outlaws engine.
Because they are using the same engine they used for all the other ones. When you load the game it doesn't even load into Shadows, it loads into a hub of all the games, and they've talked about making AC a platform rather than just games, so I'm think integration would be easier if they are all using the same tech.

AC has been an iterative creature and likely every feature has a long history of upgrades with Anvil. They would have to build every system/script from scratch to make it work on Snowdrop. Could be several years worth of work and from a dev's standpoint, there may not be much to gain at the end of it, except (may be) better graphics.

Exactly, the marketing was that it removes choices and makes it easier for the end user. That is not the case at all
But that’s not a Cerny/Pro problem. It’s on devs to use it to its advantages. We have many examples of this being the case.

What’s on Sony is the RTGI/PSSR issue, which I’m sure will be addressed in later versions.

Correct, but I feel I had plenty of times it was above 100 and above 80FPS most of the time. What CPU do you have?
- With framegen I feel like I was consistently over 100FPS. Maybe I am miss remembering?
I got Ryzen 7950x3d, 32GB, 4090.

TBH base PS5 mode in 40hz is much better than I expected so if PC version will run like dogshit to me I will just buy it. Investment in 120hz OLED was a smart thing to do!

I already completed 2 spider man games (and horizon dlc) that way and they looked much better than in performance mode.
I have a feeling pc version is going to be pretty beast. If it isn't I'm with you. I'll grab on my series x to get that sweet extra draw distance.

I agree. To be clear I would be blown away if the balance mode was 60fps and pssr was in.

Still. 40fps with all the advantages and pssr to 4k making it look crisp as fook would be awesome. Just on Sony to get pssr to where it needs to be.

Yes, the physics in that game got definitely better but I don't see a visual big jump there. Looks more or less just like Valhalla only with minor upgrades.

Well but quality is still good enough. But assassin's creed was killed with Valhalla for me. I don't think that I will play this game anytime soon.

Also the old japanese setting is just nothing for me.

But you still hear from people that it's a waste of time and resorces:

Because on RT reflections, unless you have a way powerful PC, or you have a great and smart use of it keeping in mind the hardware, like in Spider-Man 2, it actually is more the resources it asks than the visual improvement.

RTGI is the real game changer and i´m glad it´s also available on base PS5 and Series X, for those who think it´s just exclusive of Pro. Yes, 30 fps, but still great!

How about Quality mode

How about Quality mode

Afternoon and Afternoon with tea
Pretty much, differences between Quality modes on PS5 vs Pro are pretty negligible.

But that's the diminishing returns that are always being discussed and it's also why the differences between consoles and high-end PC have become rather negligible as well.

Unless, one version has RT and the other doesn't. Whether it's base console vs Pro, or consoles vs PC.

But I always said as much, personally.

I would be interested to know what settings the PS5 and PS5 Pro are using versus the PC version. Might explain why the PS5 and PS5 Pro Balanced modes look so similar if both are using the same highest rasterised settings as the PC (PC clearly goes further with RT than either console).

Maybe Alex B. at Digital Foundry will detail these if he does a PC optimised settings video?

So after watching both DF videos it basically comes down to this:

PS5 quality mode graphics looks like a small upgrade over previous entries and DF is shilling for RT because it looks quite better than performance mode because developers didn’t really care to make that mode look as good as it could. And why would they if they already spent time creating RT lighting? It just insincere from DF that they try to paint this as a big leap because of RT while in reality it’s not. It could look much better if the performance used for RT was used for rasterization. I know it’s money and time consuming etc. but let’s not pretend it wouldn’t look miles better…

First off, it says "for the series" which means AC games. And there aren't several last gen games that look better, period, there just aren't, and there certainly aren't any AC games that come close. There is plenty to shit on this game about, the graphics are not one of them.
The visuals of AC Shadows are not a leap over last gen games and they do not look impressive IMO.

Obviously I can’t speak ingenuously on the PS5 Pro version of AC Shadows, as I don’t personally own the console. However, I can confidently say that the game looks absolutely stunning on Series X, and I’m sure PS5 by extension. Quality mode is definitely the way to go here, or balanced if you have a panel that supports 40 fps. The PS5 Pro isn’t the sole “current gen/next gen only version” on console at all; it’s merely that next step above before you get to the craziness of high end PCs.

Seeing the game with my own eyes, it’s a proper current gen visual experience on Series X, with some of the best implementation of RTGI that I’ve seen, outside of something like Indiana Jones.
