Digital Foundry: Assassin's Creed Shadows - PS5/Series X/S Tech Review - A Big Visual Leap For the Series

Is the Series S better than the PS4? PS4 is still around too. You all can't come to terms that you're playing on one of the worst options. It's ok, it happens as time moves along. It ain't the end of the world.

Bro.....what are you talking about? PS4 is last gen. Series S is this gen. Series S is included in this DF comparison. Are you seriously trying to flex over the PS5 by pretending the Series S doesn't exist? Come on man.

Why are you excluding the X? Only get salty when it's the PS5? I said both base consoles are the new lower end. The screens between the Pro and Ps5 are striking. It was only something to point out 5 years ago? This is a thread about DF where critiques on performance happens. The base consoles are sad now. Pretty simple. Time to upgrade if that triggers you.

Im confused...title of the vid says its a big leap, and yet, every single take looks barely any better than previous games.

I'm curious to know what you're looking at. Especially on the Pro this game visually looks better than anything from the past.

I'd laugh if anyone thought AC Mirage looks better for instance.

You excluded X with your "PS5 Series S" post. But fine....base consoles then. Doesn't matter. You can't wish Series S away.

Dang, how does it feel to own a PS5 Series S, guys? Oof. Pro/PC or bust.

The screenshots you're pointing out are part of a specific mode where a graphical feature is activated. But that's far from the whole story.

The game is properly optimized for the hardware and power of each platform. The PS5/XSX versions wouldn't be better or worse if XSS or Pro didn't exist. The development base on consoles remains these base consoles (primarily PS5 because it has the largest user base). In fact, AC Shadows could be a great example of that situation.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
So happy it's not using FSR, looks ass pretty much universally. Wish more games this generation used taau or tsr

TAAU is just a catch-all name for Ubi's own solution, they've never used FSR on their console releases if I'm not mistaken, PC versions have the option, but the console versions always seem to use their own custom solution, which works out decently in most cases.

The unique thing here is that they're using a system very similar to UE5's Nanite for the world geometry which leads to a pop-in free world, that's impressive for a game of this scale and scope.

Why don't you just try each mode and see which one you like best?
Why do you need other people to tell you how to enjoy something?
I mean, I always try them myself to start, but I love DF videos because they go thru the work and effort to analyze it carefully so users know which mode delivers the best experience, that way I don't have to wonder if X part runs better in Y mode, I'll just know Z mode is the best way to experience it on the Pro.

they and their lackeys promoted series s as "same game, just lower res" machine for months before gen start.
you ended up with totally missing graphic features and performance modes from get go.
not to mention blockbuster games even struggling to release on xbox because of it.
pretty much the definition of a scam job.

Glances at PS5 pro.

Above 60 isn't 100.

Correct, but I feel I had plenty of times it was above 100 and above 80FPS most of the time. What CPU do you have?
- With framegen I feel like I was consistently over 100FPS. Maybe I am miss remembering?

Their geometry solution doesn't work properly with vegetation though it seems, like earlier versions of nanite, so apparently there's still noticeable vegetation pop-in/

I can't help but wonder if it's based on this (especially since one of the lead architects is formerly from Ubisoft) https://gdcvault.com/play/1034621/Maximizing-Graphics-Performance-with-Flexible
But yea UE isn't a pre-requisite for any of that for awhile now.

In fairness none of the nanite-games that have this size of world are pop-in free either, the draw-in is quite apparent even in likes of Hellblade 2 that have highly curated content/not open world.

Only in a DF thread do we see notions that the Series X and PS5 are now on par with the Series S, and that the PS5 Pro is the only “next gen” version available on console… Despite both the SX and PS5 offering full RTGI, hair strands, a Ubisoft version of nanite, and physics-based destruction lol.

3 pillars that Cerny marketed the PS5 pro on. I was under the impression this game was delivering PS5 quality settings at 60 FPS but I have been corrected that it is not the case, and its actually lower base resolution than PS5 - missing Hair physics and doesn't use PSSR. So just highlighting that both the Series S and PS5 Pro are not delivering on their marketing.

Quality like are his word not the same exact quality settings at 60fps. Something that looks like or comparable in IQ to the quality mode on ps5 base.

Yeah, but I believe they said PSSR is what made all of that possible. Sony can’t force devs to use it. The problem though is PSSR not working well with RTGI, from what I understand and that is something Sony needs to address.

Shame that we still have to choose on pro
Performance? - bad hair, 30fps in hub
Balanced? - good hair, not rt reflections, 40fps... not sure in hub
Quality? - why? rt reflections look grainy af

And no mode uses pssr

Hub is 30fps in Pro Balanced as well.

Ok, I see I'm done here.

PS4...vs Series S. Great point there. 😒

The PS5 Pro isn't doing Selective RT.

On base PS5 Standard RT is 30 fps only. The PS5 Pro is doing Standard RT at 60 fps.

Even with the updated chart the PS5 Pro is delivering. I don't think it has to be a 1:1 match, AFAIK Cerny never said that.

Yep, 40hz, strand hair and RTGI included.

The best mode on base consoles as far as I'm concerned.

TBH base PS5 mode in 40hz is much better than I expected so if PC version will run like dogshit to me I will just buy it. Investment in 120hz OLED was a smart thing to do!

I already completed 2 spider man games (and horizon dlc) that way and they looked much better than in performance mode.

Got my copy shipped today, should be here by Friday at the latest, hoping to put some time on this in the weekend.

Looks genuinely pretty decent based on reviews and last couple of game play montages.
