Digital Foundry: Monster Hunter Wilds PC - Profound Perf Problems Must Be Addressed

Games should be launching with KCD 2 like performance, not this shit.

"Just put up with it until its fixed" isn't good enough for me im afraid.
This will be the habit of some game developer this generation. Instead of more test and optimization, for cost cutting purposes just launch the game to make a profit already while sending regularly updates and fixes. Remember Cyber punk? But the silver lining is it will turn out well and the game will run better, in the long run.

I've come to expect shitty PC Ports thesedays, but do expect better from Capcom tbh. The game isn't very technically advanced from what I've seen so far, there is no excuse for this level of laziness when it comes to optimisation.

Broke 1M concurrent users. Now PC gamers let Capcom know they can release a shoddy product and they’ll buy anyway.
Im sure updates and fixes will come like a tsunami. Let me quote Sony's 30th anniversary video showing Bloodborne "Its all about persistence" 😁

...and this is why buying top end GPUs these days is just money down the toilet...served up unoptimised console port slop, time after time.
??? Top end GPUs are the best hope for the game plus every other game. They can force brute almost everything. Plus Capcom recent PC games are not ports. They are the main versions and the ports are the console versions.

Lol no. Vote with your wallets and dont accept a shit sandwich in the hope they'll fix it at some point.

Its not a habbit this gen, devs have been doing this shit since downloadable patches became a thing. There is no guarantee of a silver lining either, a lot of the time these games are either fixed by modders or not at all.

Like i said easy pass from me, Im too busy playing KCD2, which runs and plays fantastic even on low end hardware.

Top-end GPUs fare much better in relation to lower ones than usual. It’s the low-tier GPUs, aka the most popular ones, that suffer immensely.

Was there a direct comparison with say the 4070 against PS5 Pro?
No, but it was running at 1440p DLSS Balanced Ultra+RT and maintaining 60fps. However, there are still lurches and dips and the game isn’t particularly smooth. It likely performs better but isn’t as consistent.

It's not only the shit performance that bothers me, it's also the shit image quality that bothers me even more.
When i played the Dragon's Dogma 2 demo on steam back then i basically had to put the resolution slider to 125% or higher to make it look like 100% native normally would look like, otherwise it was a super blurry and muddy mess.
That also crippled the FPS on my 4090... ridiculous.

9800 x3d + OCed 5080. 5k ultra DLSS4 Performance TNN k Preset.
Fluctuates between 50 and 90 with visuals that should run at 240.....
I have to correct myself. In multiplayerlobbies in the hubs I actually have dips below the 40 fps mark.

My MH addiction just got cured, I´m done. I´ll not accept to have to resort to framegen to get baseline acceptable performance in a game that wouldn`t even have looked decent in the PS4 era.

Refunded + negative review (as little as that means)

Maybe...maybe I´ll look at this garbage again when the addon comes out.

Is it just me, but the way he sounds I felt Alex is really angry? Yes he is pc warrior but I dont blame him since to be honest, there really is some technical issues which im sure are fixable on both console and pc. But still the game is very good and excellent design and presentations and hunting is fun. Im sure technical fixee and updates for PC and console come early. Looks like the console version are much more stable. For me, I will enjoy the game on my base ps5. Just enjoy the game for now fellow hunters. 💪
My point of view is a series with such a rich history and massive game sales this past decade deserves much better than this absolute dumpster fire they released. It's flat out disrespectful and I'm baffled how they didn't pump the brakes early in development when it was clear this game was going to turn out this way. Delay the game. Fix your tech. Why rush something out the door that has severe fundamental issues?

I bought the game. I played for two hours before work. It is running fine for me on my 4070S/14700kf, but it's ugly as hell on max settings. This is not a Rise on Switch situation where I was having a ton of fun but also being cognizant of its shortcomings but it was okay because Switch is what Switch is.

But for a new flag ship game in the series? Even though I'm having fun playing it, I wish I wasn't constantly thinking "man I wish Capcom didnt release a game that looks so fucking bad in 2025."

And this is not just a PC issue. I played the beta on PS5 as well and hooolllly shit. I've played Switch games that look better, cleaner, and runs smoother than that mess.

I honestly think it should be mandatory for all PC gamers to boot up something like RDR2 once a year to remind themselves of how good games can look when you can turn everything up and still get top tier IQ without needing to sacrifice performance.

The kind of IQ and performance here is inexcusable, and it's an absolute joke that in spite of that this game has managed to storm it's way to over a million concurrent players. We're well and truly fucked.

I was recently watching a video about how Traveler's Tales created some of the most fancy looking visual effects on the Genesis, for the Mickey Mania game.

Back when developers had little to work with but still managed to do a lot, using smart optimization techniques.

Now it's the opposite. Devs have a lot to work with but do less. This is unacceptable.

I'm really tired of the technical incompetence of numerous Japanese devs. It's been going on for too long. How can they care so much about the intricacies of their gameplay systems yet neglect the vessel that carries and delivers that gameplay (i.e. the technical quality of the game itself)? Not to mention the harm it does to the immersion and the visual/audio experience of the worlds they create.

Maybe the game is fun?

Good games can look bad

Yes, and if that's the case then you better also make sure your game has good performance.

What's the use of the game being "good" if the framerate is constantly getting in the way, on top of everything looking like shit?

Capcom why dont you test a game before you do full release???

Did we had any game lately with no issues???

I think it's time to stop buying games on day one and just wait for 6 months because this thing what modern devs do are just idiotic

That's not the fucking point of a technical discussion.

Maybe don't come to a thread like this?
Tone it down mate, no need for the aggression.
You said people shouldn't be buying it because the graphics are crap.
I simply pointed out that maybe it's a good game.
You are right, this is a technical discussion, my bad.

Some of my favourite games of all time have performed and looked like crap.
But I suppose thats just me.
Anyway I won't derail further

Not really? Frame time variance can be avoided with a FPS cap. It’s not ideal, as you leave a lot of performance on the table. Anything under 12GB of VRAM will be hopeless if you want decent texture quality.
eh I would say you need 16 gb vram if you want decent texture quality with decent performance

hd texture pack causes huge frametime spikes on the 4070 even at 1440p output so it is probably only usable at 1080p if you have 12 GB VRAM

this actually aligns well with how things were last generation. 6 GB VRAM ensured smooth performance at maximum textures in all PS4 games at 1080p and 8 GB VRAM ensured smooth performance at 1440p and 4K. this was with PS4 having a total of 8 GB memory (games only used 5.5 GB of it but the results were as such). PS5 doubling the memory of PS4, it is normal that now you need 12 GB VRAM at 1080p and 16 GB VRAM at 1440p and 4K to ensure smooth performance at maximum possible textures

it is a problem with 4070 as it has 60 tier VRAM that would realistically be suitable for 1080p only.

Japanese devs always get away with shitty optimisations.
Japanese developers...
I'm really glad that Death Stranding 2 is using the Decima engine.
I'm sure that Director Kojima will be able to achieve stable PSSR 4K/60fps on the PS5 Pro with amazing image quality.

Strange but this guy said he had no performance issue on his PC. As always it all about how you set up your pc.

In a lot of reviews they literally didn`t even mention the performance or only gave one liners about "being not ok" or "small hiccups" while also praising the "great visuals". Now we see how it truly is and I think that speaks volumes about the independence/objectivity of those reviewers.
I got a lot of these shills on my youtube-channel-ban list now.....

This isn't why most people opt to game on PC though. People don't spend all that money on hardware for things to look and perform like this game does. It should scale appropriately, but it doesn't.

In the end , reviews and technical analysis are always subjective. In the end the best reviewer is your own self But if you really into reviews, look for more than 10 to 15 reviews and just use them for point of comparison on the positives and negatives ,but dont take them too seriously. If i find at least 50% are good reviews, then that suffice. But the problem of reviews this days is they also insert different agendas especially woke, that is why its hard to base your decision on reviews this days. Just saying.

At least the performance is consistent. Yeah, the game looks like shit, but even on a maxed-out PC it’s still ugly. I’d rather play a game that looks like crap but runs consistently than the same game that looks less crappy (but still crappy) and runs poorly.
Also console dosen't have shader compilation. Can you imagine waiting 30min on console?

But it looks and play's like crap on every platform.
If graphics have a higher priority then gameplay for someone, this game is obviously an avoid. But we've known that since the beta
