Digital Foundry's Best Game Graphics of 2024 - PC/PS5/Xbox - Another Phenomenal Year!

I have seen gameplays from Outlaws running on a high-end PC and while I would agree it deserves a mention I don't think it's good enough to be in the top 3, not in the same year when other devs managed to extract so much from UE5. The smaller the world, the easier it is to have better graphics and you have to be extremely talented to overcome that. I could only name Forbidden West and RDR2 as truly awesome looking open world games.

Can't comment on PS5 Pro, though. It's good it received the upgrade, because I was very unhappy with how it performed on the base model without having a valid reason to run so bad.

You seen it, but never played it and seen it in person. Trust me its stunning

nvm i saw you played it on base model, i still think it looks gorgeous. The only thing that looks weak especially compared to the rest of the package are the human character models

Indiana Jones ?! What?!
It looks good but it looks like a good looking ps4 game.
It looks good. I can’t really blame any particular aspect but it didn’t gave me that wow effect other games did this year.
And I would put stellar blade there somewhere.

And hellblade is barely a game. I would disqualify it

I never played it until a few days ago, but the game looks stunning and feels polished, im really enjoying it

Yeah, I think it's graphical ranking is pretty apt, what anyone might think of the main character notwithstanding.

Avatar won last year, for good reasons.

Outlaws or other Ubi games will feature in these rankings for a long time I believe. Am noticing they have added a lot of systems on top of good IQ, that make it impressive.

In addition to the already mentioned inexplicable absence of Space Marine 2, I miss at least honorable mention for

-Still Wakes the Deep

-MFS 2024 (even despite its launch problems)

-Stellar Blade.

It shocks me to see mentions of Metaphor and Persona and not those games 🤷🏻

EDIT: Tekken 8 deserve mention also🤷

reasonably solid list, though it’s baffling there’s no Flight Sim 2024 in there.
They also gushed a lot about Stellar Blade at launch and with the Pro patch, so surprising it isn’t in the list.

I’m not convinced about Penny’s big breakaway

I love it how they contradict themselves in making this list just to exclude "certain games".

I just got a PS5 pro and went to DF to see what games I should be trying. I'm actually staggered by their lack of detailed coverage for most games. Even their recent FF round up video is lacking in details. Smaller channels such as GamingTech (he usually only covers HDR settings) and Majorben have done a much better job in this regard even though they have far fewer resources.

I wish I could say the whole situation was odd, but at this stage it's very much on-brand for them.

Should have put SB in the honorable mentions instead of Rebirth. The Pro patch helped with the IQ but the game is peppered full of low res assets and effects. The PC version next year with the enhanced lighting might fare better.

If you're going to do this then it would make sense for you to specify where this so called "elsewhere" is.

That image is lower resolution than any screen grab you could take directly from the PS5 (it's 1600x838), and it certainly doesn't look like that on the pro.

The elsewhere is Era, invoking it here riles people up so it didn't feel necessary, and it looks like a cross-section of a full image emphasizing the low resolution assets.

Here's one from the DF article to emphasize the point.

Top 3:

3. Star Wars: Outlaws
2. Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2
1. Indiana Jones and The Great Circle
Top 2 is spot on! I would put Black Myth at #3 but I haven’t played Outlaws so can’t say they’re wrong. Need to watch the video. Astro Bot has many fantastic qualities too with all the animations and just joyful design. But Indy has blown my mind in so many ways so no debate on what’s #1 for me. Biggest positive surprise in years, had no idea Machinegames were capable of something like that.

Remake has the exact same problems and on PC as well. This is clearly a bug where the textures aren't loading, but they have never addressed it.

Remake is a lot more linear, simpler, but it is more consistent than Rebirth in terms of asset quality, hell, they even went ahead and fixed Cloud's apartment door for Intergrade.

Played all of Rebirth in Quality mode, it has way too many instances of low resolution assets to be consistent. Can't say at this point if the PC version might have similar issues, but at least it seems to improve the cut-scene lighting.

What I am getting from that list is I need to play more (AAA) games. I have only played two of them. I do own another one so I will get to it eventually.

Well it's clearly either been doctored and/or it's not direct feed.

If you're going to go down this road then at least make an attempt to make yourself appear credible.

Rebirth didn't look so hot on base PS5, but if we're going to thrown Indiana Jones right to the top of the list (while ignoring how it looks on consoles in comparison to how it does on PC) then rebirth at the very least deserves a mention by virtue of how it looks on PS5 Pro.

By the way, even that DF image you linked is 1080p, so really not sure what you're doing here.

You're welcome to post some PS5 Pro screens.

Though from what I know, there's no difference in asset quality so the same low resolution textures will still be low resolution.

? It's a direct image from the DF article covering the game.

The same image being in 2160p isn't going to fix the asset quality, what are *you* doing G, lol.

Please don't turn into that kind of a poster just because you've recently picked up a PS5 Pro.

Dude, where were you this critical with metaphor?

It's the fifth fucking post in the topic lol.

If Metaphor had shipped with a decent or any Anti Aliasing solution, I would have replaced Persona 3 Reload with that as an honorable mention, but as it is, the game is very jagged and the IQ suffers.

Odd list. Metaphor looks like a Ps3 game. Most of the locations have a bland look to them. The more interesting ones are JPEGs with character dialog overlayed.

Space Marine 2 impressed me the most this year. They also snubbed Stellar Blade.

That's an instance where the textures haven't loaded. I played the game for 2 hours earlier on the pro and it looks nothing like that, ever.

Screenshots that come directly from the console will always be 4k in resolution. It calls in to question how these screenshots are being compressed and doctored.

I've just seen the era post by the way, are you really going to come here and repost it when that person also posted the following image in the same post:

Be serious.

Metaphor looks and performs like absolute ass on consoles, in all circumstances (to the point where I'd say it's unplayable). It's cometely valid for people to be calling in to question why that got a mention but rebirth didn't.

Rebirth looks like shit regardless of platform. It looks cleaner on pro but you already could play in graphics mode on regular PS5.

It has shit textures, bad models, PS3 lighting quality, horrible pop in for geometry - foliage - shadows etc.

And many more. It doesn't deserve to be in top 10 this year. Only really good thing are main character models.

We had a thread here where it was full of screenshots with that texture bug. Remake has the same issue. The games are rife with terrible textures.

I think Dead Rising on PRO should be mentioned too.
Not only it's 4k60 but got rt reflections.
All t&a aside, steallar blade is genuinely good looking game. Deserved honorable mention where ff7 got one (deservedly too)
Environments can look about as good as indiana jones honestly... or better imo. Characters too obviously just less realistic look for stellar blade

I've played the game for 88 hours and there's a lot of places like that, I guess you'll find more as you progress through the game a bit more 🤷‍♂️

ok? not sure what I'm supposed to criticize there, its another cross-section of a picture showing a very low resolution asset. Looking at the Cloud model, it looks like it's a Performance mods picture, which notoriously looks very fuzzy on PS5.

I doubt you'll find many people disagreeing with that sentiment..

-

Just copied these from my own PS5, all these were taken in Quality mode.

The game is full of low resolution assets, there is no other way to put it. The Pro Patch will pretty up the IQ, but as far as I'm aware, there is no difference in asset or lighting quality.

The third one is to show how the lighting can completely blow out in places if you're standing in an odd spot. Hopefully this is something the PC version with its improved lighting fixes.

FF7 is very varied game. It's one I got the most screenshots from this year. It can look genuinely incredible and that was even before PRO patch.
But some parts, models and textures are atrocious. like sudden ps2 levels.

You get stuff like this:
DmCebjH.jpeg

aaBemT9.jpeg

And then, next scene you get the best towel I've ever seen in a video game mixed with the worst table I've ever seen in a video game. HOW
1alQ2W2.jpeg

Also.. I've discovered that HDR screenshots on ps5 are utter trash. Worse quality than even jpg setting.
If you guys want to save space, use JPG screenshot setting. Otherwise go PNG. never use HDR setting as it compresses to hell and back on it's way to usb stick...
and my whole ps5 base gallery is with that hdr setting....

A side effect of trying to put out a game in a quick time frame, I guess.

Or my original thought / theory, that this was going to be a cross-gen game until some point in development, which explains a lot of these low res assets that would have fit into the PS4's memory pool.

Space Marine 2 is gorgeous. Definitely deserved mention, especially taking into account the epic scale of everything going on in that game.
Backdrops aren't "scale" and the game is full of visible budget constraints and old tech.
It's good for what it is, not more.

Tiny Glade does RT on a GTX 1060 GPU - it's a phenomenal achievement and a fun little time sink as you mess with the environment and setup some nice screenshots.
At some point it's a global illumination technique and not actual rt.
For example, teardown also does that

I'm talking about "scale" as in the massive vistas of epic battles. Call it a "backdrop" if you want. I thought the game was visually compelling regardless of budgets and "old tech".

Visuals don't have to have all new tech to be impressive.

Like.. if next year someone released 40 minutes long(honestly how much real gameplay h2 has) game that controls JUST LIKE HELLBLADE and obviously looks like real life cgi, incredible... does that win?
Is it fair if it competes with 70-100h long games?!
if matrix demo was this year... would it win against hellblade? like what. where is that line

Yes it is RTGI using Software RT in a custom engine, just because it's not using DXR requiring HW accelerated RT GPU's it doesn't mean it isn't raytracing, it's even more impressive.
