If you read some of the comments on Reddit, you get the impression that Veilguard is being seen as quite a step back for LGBT. So heavy handed is its messaging that many players have come away from it thinking that non-binary types are incredibly annoying people who behave like petulant children if they don't get their way. And the funniest thing is that the worst of the dialogue was written by one of them, so there's not even any wiggle room for the old "it doesn't actually represent us" chestnut. Sunlight is acting as the best disinfectant for wokeness.
And the reason really awkward loud DEI or LBQT is done in media is multifold:
1. Weird person to begin, hence the stereotype of quirky LBTG people. They cant help but bring their personal experience or dream situation to the product
And/or......
2. Attention whoring, especially in media. Funny how in most industries, all the LBGT people seem chill and you dont notice them working at a bank or company making blenders. But work at a media company, and it's always a case of
"Hey, look at me everyone! And dont forget to follow my Twitter account! And for the game or movie I'm making, check out the gay person! Just to make sure you dont miss them, were going to make characters or plot really obvious with the most flamboyant and stereotyped gay dude or lesbian too! So even though we all say we want to blend in with everyone else as chill people, I got to make sure you all notice us. So I got to make the gay guy wear loud clothes and act like Richard Simmons. Oh, and were going include some lectures to boot. And if you dont like, I'll battle you on Twitter all day because it's obvious your fault for not liking the product!"
It's no wonder people think the LBGT community can be quirky and childish. If that's what's pushed from media, then that's what people will remember.
What the community wants is acceptance like something grounded like Brokeback Mountain, but in a lot of media they portray themselves (in product and social media) as clowns. Its really that simple.
