EDGE: "Power struggle: the real differences between PS4 and Xbox One performance"

Excuse me my ignorance, but isn´t the upclock something that can be done later on via firmware update?

I swear i read that was done on the original PSP, downclocked from 333mhz to 222mhz on a firmware update.

Couldn´t they use this later on the PS4 lifecycle if thermal proves to be OK in the long run?

It is technically possible but unlikely

The thermal testing would have to be done on the original units and would therefore already have been done

So there is no real incentive or reasoning to do it after it ships

The reason the PSP could be upclocked was due to the larger battery pack being released as it's thermal design already allowed for the faster clock but the battery did not

Hahahaha, I'm picturing Bish's ava right now.. *shudder*

I can't access that page from work, what was in it?

It's some guy that started posting in 08 I think, was all russian posts, but started to switch to english as he attacked anything Sony. I mean anything. He'd shit on it if he could. The amount of stuff that makes sense is 0. He has never been right, and his "insider" that he talks to, reads exactly like how he normally writes.

The stuff in there is just pathetic.

When I read the insider interviews I imagine him speaking to himself and putting on a fake mustache when he talks in his insider voice.

I hope they do in a couple of years from now, you can never have too much power.

There is no reason for an upclock to become possible or feasible over the years. If they haven't adjusted clocks during the last months, similar to the XBO, then it won't happen anymore. The only thing that could improve over the console's lifecycle is the amount of resources dedicated to the OS.

Why would Sony up the clocks?

Imagine the headlines on all the website "PS4 NOW EVEN MORE POWERFUL THAN XBOX ONE!!!"

It could add thousands of new pre orders to Sony's accounts for relatively little risk, all at Microsoft's expense.

*not that I think they'll do it, but can understand the reasons why they might want too.

Why would Sony up the clocks? They have the more powerful console by some margin, they have 0 reasons to be worried about.

Agreed, though I do still wish that we had hit that 2.5TFLOP that was rumored before... it would have to be over 1100mhz which is crazy high.

I wish it had a couple more CU's. I'm still disappointed in that. =[

Not that adding 150mhz adds any kind of meaningful boost.

2.18 TFLOPS isn't bad... That's another PS3 / 360 in raw performance.

Now blows off underwear too! It's like Ivan Drago murdering Apollo Creed powerful!

You should start a blog detailing your wishes as info from an insider.

I think Sony is just as able to upclock as much as MS did, in spite of case size differences. Maybe fan speed would just increase more, comparatively speaking. After all it's not like MS switched to 853mhz binned chips, they're literally upclocking chips that worked fine at 800mhz. And the result of that is simply increased TDP, something I'm sure both case designs have some leeway to operate under, though Xbone with slightly more perhaps.

Perhaps posters should remove any linked photos from that site to ensure this thread isn't closed?

It needs to hit 100 pages people

Believe!

I'm going to continue asking this question... How is this misterx stuff not banned? What exactly does it take for a site to be banned? I mean, if posting from it tends to result in thread closures, why allow posting from it at all?

We'll, we're at 46. ;]

Huh must have different settings then as it's 92 pages on mine

Perhaps how many posts per page?

We could always turn to DBZ power level comparisons. That should get us a few pages pretty easily.

No no that is far too confusing to follow lol

How do you lure Verendus into a thread?

Honestly if the potpourri discussion didn't bring him in, I don't know what would

But how many times do you hear after a software update people claim that their console has been bricked, or a game has caused a RROD/YLOD.

It's just not worth it.
*thinks back to what it would mean to be stuck with launch 360 and PS3 firmwares*

I think it's safe to assume Sony stick to 800/1600 MHz to avoid noise and overheat.
Microsoft is using the same technology on a larger die with 853/1750 MHz clocks.
They say specs were too conservative so they had that 53/150 MHz overclock...
...I'd be a little afraid.

They can change it in firmware updates, though, and thoroughly test it before sending the update out. As long as they don't increase voltage I can't imagine a slight up-clock is impossible.

I am willing to bet good money this is what Sony is doing ala the PSP. They haven't released the final speed because they are planning on doing a uplock either close to launch or down the line and are still testing it.

I think it's far more likely the PS4 will get the upclock from factory to be honest

Not convinced 1.6 is going to be the launch CPU clock speed

Don't really expect them to change the GPU though

I wonder when Sony will announce their final specs. It could possibly be slightly higher than 800/1600 MHz.

I'm not so sure... PS4 is SMALL (and with an internal PSU).
Overclocking would make cooling difficoult.

Have you or the bird heard anything about the new devkits being faster?

No I haven't heard anything. It just makes sense that Sony is trying to up speeds in some way since even when there was parity between Xbox and PS4 they still didn't announce a final spec. Only reason not to is if they are really pushing to do something.

I wouldn't be surprised. You want to test that sort of thing until you're certain it won't cause any heating issues etc. Last thing they need is a scenario similar to the RROD, and the console does look pretty compact, so I can't imagine there's much margin for error.
