Former PlayStation Exec Says 'The Game Is Changing' As Xbox Goes Multiplatform - “They were Blockbuster and overtime they became Netflix”

Former PlayStation exec Adam Boyes has been talking to Gamertag Radio host Danny Peña recently - and when asked about Microsoft's new strategy, the former Sony employee had some interesting things to say. Boyes spoke about "the game landscape changing" - and that "they [Microsoft] were Blockbuster" and over time "they became Netflix".

Boyes also posed the question of "who's the victim" when Microsoft decides to move more games over to other platforms.

Replace the guy on the chair with Sony, the girl with Sony games and the guy she's touching with PC.

They're not exactly similar but I think this guy's comparison is on point; for better or for worse.

I personally dislike the direction to which the gaming landscape is moving, I'd rather have all console brands that hoard and guard their games like Nintendo, and fight to not release their 1st party games anywhere else, including pc. This leads to competition and a very strong motivation to make compelling games that are system sellers. Going multiplatform for both soy and xbox is a bad move.

The problem with corporatized mega conglomerate that are the Xbox division is that they are unwilling to deliberately put they're heads downs and work on developing banger games for the next 5 years while operating at minimal capacity,. This short-sighted quarterly revenue/profits chasing over sound, cohesive 5/10 year planning ahead is what got them in this mess in the first place.
Disagree. As a PC gamer since the PS3 days there's nothing more I enjoy than having more games available on more platforms. Theres nothing thats making my life better about Sony gatekeeping their games on PS5. When a game is on PC I can play it on PC, my laptop, steam deck etc with free cloud saves, and free online.

On the other hand when a PC game is on other platforms I get benefits like when Overwatch came to Switch with cross play match queue times went down drastically because there were more players to play with. Exclusives are an antiquated concept and that's the reason why only Nintendo has permanent exclusives everyone else is a multiplatform publisher now.

What “amazing content” does MS put out? I mean the #1 reason they are becoming 3rd party is because they have NO amazing content so no one buys their product

I think they mean, they purchased publishers that put out amazing content years ago.

Like Arkane put out Prey, Microsoft buys them and puts out Redfall. Bethesda puts out Skyrim, Microsoft aquires them and they release Starfield. Rare makes Donkey Kong Country and Goldeneye, Microsoft them and releases Kinect Adventures.

There is no motivation to make compelling games but to make money.for companies tht ended about a decade ago when most of the game devs started leaving. This new gen is just making games to continue their streaming subscription service. All the same like Amazon Netflix shows. Average good enough trash

Most of everything in cultural production is trash, there may be years that have more outstanding games, but most games have always been trash.

That being said, I don't think a rental model offers enough upside to provide the incentive to produce ground breaking games.

On the other hand with the cost of modern AAA games taking risks can be prohibitively expensive, so that creates another problem.
I used XCloud and GeForce Now exclusively with no consoles for about three months once. It was fine.

PC and consoles give different experiences. You can't convince my brother to play on PC even if i gift him a 5090 based system with free games. He just wants plug and play experience and PC just isn't that.

I had a nephew who was exactly the same way, but he is a hardcore Skyrim fan. One day, he came over to hang out right after I installed Nolvus, and he's been playing it on PC ever since. Still a die hard PlayStation fanboy though. It depends on the game's they love and how much life can be put back into that game on PC. I find it hard to believe anyone would complain about crashes or bugs (which are less frequent on PC now) just to keep playing Skyrim with cheesy mods from the Creation Club instead of something like Nolvus. Unless they’re dealing with serious self-hatred issues. :messenger_grimmacing_

Microsoft needs a vehicle to drive the Game Pass service. Steam, PlayStation, and Nintendo won't allow their Trojan horse into their ecosystems, but they will gladly accept support. Even on PC, people don't like Xbox that much; I don't think they can count on the PC alone to bear the weight of their service. Game Pass needs a home. Maybe their handheld can finally give them a market where they can thrive. Let's see.

lmao, you can literally boot up the same game about 10 seconds faster on a 5090 pc than on a ps5 pro, wtf are you talking about

And Sony have spent billions trying to become a GaaS powerhouse. They know things are changing too.
To me it's not about knowing things are changing. It's watching all these GAAS games and seeing how much money is being spent on them and thinking. "We make games. Why can't we make one of these?". It would be dumb not to even try to do it. They just went to hard.

Fanboys are perfectly ok with this. Just give us lots of free shitty games. They eat scraps and lick their paws too.

Even Netflix knows exclusives are what brings people to its platform , if their top 10 series where avaliable on HBO, Prime, etc. There wont be reason to move to Netflix.

GTFO here with this attitude. PC and Consoles are different and PC never gonna be as plug and play as consoles.

My beloved cousin is simple-minded; he graduated from a special school. Even he can turn the PC on and double-click on the shortcut of Call of Duty to play. I can't imagine how anyone wouldn't be able to do this task that my cousin already does, but it is what it is.

Not really an issue with the way your cousin is doing it. The issue comes in, wanting to do this from your couch with a controller. I know all about PC gaming and you can't fully control it and do everything you need to do with just a controller from your couch. You need a mouse and keyboard eventually. Especially if you are in the middle of a game and your friend wants you to join him in a discord chat which is what everyone on PC uses.

Lol

If Xbox is Netflix then PlayStation is the internet.
I mean really, former or not, this guy still loves the aftertaste of Sony's dick in his mouth. How much shall we give him to catch up with PS5 generation, the most abysmal of them all, even hardcore warriors here will admit it, they done fucked it up with little to no content.

Xbox as Netflix only will work if no one wants to spend 70 usd on new IPs/sp games & msft has the ability to release multiple AAA per year on all devices due to a lack of competition from other publishers.

If nextgen = 100 usd per game then msft gamble makes sense.

If we look at the top 20 of Xbox/ps we see multiple sp games not an armada of gaas/mtx beasts from mp publishers./s

Well according to reports Netflix has over 282 million subscribers, so Microsoft need's a few more to be on their level, so i don't agree with him personally, not at the moment anyway.

The only way “xbox” becomes netflix is to make gamepass available on all platforms with each game flawlessly streamed regardless of device.

"When Phil and his team are putting amazing content on more platforms, who's the victim? I've been asking a lot of people like 'who's the victim?' and there aren't any, except for people who are just like 'well I want it [games] only where I bought it and that's what I expect'."

The victim is the Xbox owner who was sold the console under the guise that it was needed to play Xbox console-exclusive games. When the change in strategy happened their consoles were devalued. In fact, as a PS5 Pro owner myself, my XSX no longer gets played because now all games will come to PS5 Pro and look at lot better too. Can I get my money back if I send in the XSX?

To call this victimless is to disenfranchise everyone who bought an XSX under false pretenses.

You might say "well it plays games" - That's not what I bought it for.

I bought it to play XBOX CONSOLE EXCLUSIVE GAMES and Xbox is ending those but still have my XSX money and my shit is under a mountain of dust never to be used for any gaming. What a waste of money for me and what false advertising. There are plenty of PC fans who resent exclusives because the ones they get are like bukkake horny simulator and wow classic, but of course consoles get the AAA exclusive games like TotK, but that has changed in some cases and they want it to continue. Sony needs to take a hard look at the numbers for the AAA SP games they are porting to PC and end that program if it isn't profitable. Get back to basics. Give us a better reason to own.

Its very annoying to watch all these people online ignore this side of the argument.

He said plug n play, I replied regarding the plug n play thing. He didn't mention anything about discord or using the rest of the pc. You are telling me that PC has more capabilities than ps5, and since you can't use these capabilities with a controller, it is better not having them at all.
