Games where the Original release was better than the Remake or Remaster

Gears of War 1 PC / Ultimate on PC and Xbox One.

Like someone mentioned earlier with Deus Ex: Human Revolutions' "Directors Cut" inserting lengthy, laborious content into the midst of an already tightly paced game, Gears of War 1 on PC added quite easily the worst levels of Gears 1 into the game, right at the point when the games story is meant to be coming to its big finale.

  • In the original game you get the data from the Fenix estate for the Lightmass bomb, and go straight to the train station to detonate the bomb, and end the game. The story has built up to this, and the pacing is exact.

  • The PC port however, right in the midst of what was a tight, well paced crescendo to the game, inserts a slow paced series of missions that take over an hour to complete. The objective for that entire hour is just to activate a single bridge. They also add a terrible boss battle, the worst boss in any Gears game, to finish it up. Nothing relating to the plot occurs during this hour. You'll also note that the PC version wasn't praised for these additions, but rightly criticised for them, and yet they still kept them in the Ultimate Edition.

More content isn't always better, especially in short single player games. Hopefully they make it optional in the remastered trilogy, but no one complains about it enough for that to happen, so we'll be getting a substantially worse version of a legendary game yet again.

Adding Persona 4 to my list.

Did not like Chie and Teddie's voice recast, the new character Marie is terrible and adds nothing worthwhile to the game, I also didn't like how much the visuals were 'simplified' for Vita and it's a damn shame that all future P4 re-releases have built upon that version.

Oh wow, thanks for that. I was planning on getting it on PS4 but the difference is quite big. I thought the Vita could handle a PS2 level game on the go, these cuts are quite big.

Is the added stuff worth it?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

IMO, not really. The P3 Fes and P5 Royal added stuff is much better integrated. P4's Marie and her added dungeon, IMO, isn't.

I find it easier to list games that were actually better in their Remake/Remaster/Port than the opposite, because it only happens so often.

Metroid Prime Remastered is better than the original, in my opinion.
I saw Wind Waker, I would also pick the Wii U remaster. Same for Twilight Princess.

The original Shining Force was better than the GBA remake. It was still a good game though. Also liked the Phantasy Star I II III compilation on GBA, even if the originals are the better experience.

Unless an old game is really difficult to run or emulate, or something has been fixed or updated that significantly improves the game itself, then I'm not so interested anymore in regular remakes.

Anything I can think of has been named already but I'll go with the Ocarina of Time remake for the 3DS. It didn't add enough to justify me playing it.

Something like Quake II Remastered fixed the Machine Gun to not have muzzle climb (What kind of game do you think you are Quake II?) making it far more useful than it originally was. Plus it added a whole new expansion. I also prefer complete remakes along the lines of FF7 to the point where they're not so easily comparable to the original anymore.

Alan Wake says no. The Remaster was clearly worse than the original and it’s not even a debate.
What was so bad about the remaster compared to OG?

I only played the remaster & didn't enjoy it, the gunplay was infuriating & the later parts where was swarms of enemies with shitty aiming made it unplayable & uninstallable for me shortly afterwards.

It was mainly a technical disaster. Wake and a lot of the other characters looked very strange. The gameplay is what it is. I suppose you would not have liked the original either.
