Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

Given the mixed results on hard drive speed upgrades with the pro I've been looking into seeing if we can at least reach 4tb of space instead. It would be a huge convenience to many to have a doubling of the max space that we had on the PS4 OG. Here is what I've found so far:

- PS4 Pro officially supports a maximum drive size of 9.5mm thick
- The drive caddy has a bunch extra space in it as seen in this video
- Most (possibly all) 4tb 2.5" drives are 15mm thick (like the new 3/4/5tb barracuda drives)
- 15mm is too thick to fit in the PS4 Pro even with this extra space in the caddy. The guy in this thread actually jammed a 15mm drive into his PS4 Pro, but look what it did to his system
- I think there is a Western Digital 4tb 12.5mm drive out there as specified by this article

So now it comes down to does this Western Digital 4tb 2.5" 12.5mm drive exist in certain WD MyPassports and if so is 12.5mm small enough to fit in the PS4 Pro?

I'm on the Firecuda 2TB SSHD myself and I tend to find the OS isnt 100% snappy and the share button sometimes takes a while to trigger the noise to confirm a screenshot has been taken.
Was hoping the OS might be 100% snappy with the Pro but I assume its just something more stability and optimisation updates will hopefully help with.

I'm on the stock hdd and seeing similar slowness on the share button and a little on the OS. Assuming that extra 1gb of OS RAM is not quite as snappy. The Firecuda probably doesn't have anything to do with it.

Yea, I kind of assumed the HDD had nothing to do with it.
Hopefully with the system updates coming every few months it'll iron out these few sluggish moments.
Its not massively noticeable, just midly irritating at times.

With the share button, I've gotten used to it taking a while before I hear the noise, so to me thats just standard.
As we know, it takes the picture when you press the button, just the noise takes a while to confirm its taken, lol

The slow RAM is only in use when you are playing a game so it shouldn't be causing OS slow down.

I think the share button sound is just normal...I've tested it. I hit the share button, the screen shot is always exactly where I click it...but the little sound always comes a few seconds later

Short answer is no. 9.5mm is the limit unless another Nyko bank comes along.

The guy that rammed the 15mm into his Pro is an idiot...

Agreed, that's pretty stupid, but I really think a 12.5mm drive will physically fit. I found this other article with the my passport drives that should work. Does anyone have a 4tb model of one of those drives? Open it up and see what size the drive is. Since these are supposed to be the smallest densest drives out there someone online should have opened one up to see their size, right? I'm still searching. Otherwise I might just buy one and see.

I would advise against that. The WD My Passport Ultra models seem to have micro USB connectors directly on the circuit board of the hard drive, instead of SATA connectors. The hard drives do not have a standard SATA interface and cannot be used with the PS4 or computers in general as a regular internal drive. The press image for the hard drive in the Anandtech link looks like this:
Code:

Similar WD My Passport Ultra external drives that have similar dimensions and case design have been taken apart and shown to have USB connectors instead of SATA.

What's the difference between the "Game Drive" and the FireCuda?
Both are SSHD.

I'd like to see m2 slots on consoles. Let me pop in a small m2 drive which I can use to cache the currently playing game to (and for OS speed), while keeping a slower drive for the mass storage of games I'm not playing at the moment.

Like the OG Xbox kinda

Yeah, you're right, the share button is a bit weird now. But I think I saw the same thing pre drive change so I figured it was some oddity to the Pro share system. I will check the share options but it definitely has a delay. Hmm

Yeah. Some ppl are mentioning they get a delay for the sound of the screenshots. I do get that but that's not my concern. Sometimes I have to wait over ten seconds after hitting the share button for the square to highlight so I can save a video clip. Also as mentioned when trying to open the web browser when gaming can take close to a minute.

I just received my 1tb crucial mx300.

I'm at my parent's though, so I won't be able to install it untill tomorrow.

Can't wait.

I've had some mixed results upgrading my stock HDD to a SSHD. I pulled it from my old PS4, took a while, system transfer, then system backup, then system restore... 13 hours!

All measurements are in seconds

Just preordered mine from amazon.de. This
better
gonna be good. No need to hurry for me, as I still wait for them decent Pro bundles.

Why buy a new hard drive without the console? I think you will be waiting for a good Pro bundle deal for a while. Maybe Horizon Zero Dawn at the earliest.

These results are not good. Actually preforming worse for two games. Makes me want to call and cancel my Firecuda order before it even gets delivered.

How is this even possible?

If he uses older SSHD drive it might have more platters inside which means lower sequential read speeds due to data density when compared to newer one.

Not sure if it's case here. Plus we don't know how many times game was run before measurement - SSHD needs to learn pattern of what files are accessed most often - usually first start of game will be slowest - very close to typical 5400 rpm drive.

It's unfortunate that Seagate stopped producing 7200 rpm SSHD drives (and you can't even get 7200rpm notebook drive above 1TB )

After seeing this, think I'm opting for an SSD, though some of the gains are pretty nice, having some actually perform worse is a no go..

If we don't get any "professional" results by next weekend I will try and post comparison times between the stock Pro HDD and the 2TB Firecuda (mine isn't scheduled to arrive until Wednesday).

The sound is tied to the notification popup and there's a delay in the notification so that there's no chance you get the popup in your screenshot.

I've turned the notification off completely because the delay (while done for a good reason) still annoyed me.

Don't forget, SSHDs have a wierd way of cacheing data used most frequently, and some learn what to hold onto. Jumping into a ton of different games might not produce the best results.

Honestly, I'd go for a 7200RPM drive over a SSHD if you play a lot of games, and switch between them frequently. Otherwise you'll probably see the best results if you stick to very few games most often.

Exactly have you done in this tests? Boot up?

Any good 2TB 7200s? I'm preparing to get a Pro myself and missed out on the firecuda (unless I check on newegg).

TLO and COD took longer?

As has been previously mentioned, the key benefits of SSHDs are to cache the most commonly used data on NAND flash. So using a number of games means that you may have re-caching of games on NAND, and performance gains using the solid date memory over the data stored on platter will be compromised.

Anyone using SSHDs instead of more expensive SSDs should be in mind that they should absolutely not be compared directly and on the same level.

If you want consistent performance on a range of games, use a SSD to ensure 100% performance. If you are only playing one or two games at a time, then you will get benefit from SSHD.

I think I am going to run to Frys and see what they have. Those Samsung Evos are a lot more expensive than I thought they were going to be... Wow

Are they really worth it?

No.

The 2.5" 2TB drives are all 5400rpm, unless a model has come out that I am not aware of.

It sucks, because a 2.5' 7200rpm SSHD (with bigger than 8GB) would be absolutely excellent.

What is your SSHD? Can you try re-measuring the COD?

Eh, even if it's slower 2TB is basically essential for me at this point. I'm tired of having to delete something all the time just to download an update for a game I'm currently playing.

Guess i'll stay with the stock HDD, 1TB is enough for me.
And I don't see SSHD or SSD's doing any wonders in the meantime.

Thanks for the response. I'm confused about the "for what they are" part. Do you think for the price point the Evo is worth it? Do they differ in terms of technology?

One is a hybrid and the other is a solid state drive. Of course a solid state drive will outperform a hybrid. But for the money, the 2tb Firecuda is an excellent value and likely the best nonsolid state drive option available.

Now don't laugh but would a 15mm drive fit in without using the caddy? Would it even be possible?

What I mean is would you be able to put it in and connect with the sata connector in the PS4 due to its larger size it could act as it's caddy anyway?

It's not like it's going to be moved around is it as it will sit in front of your tv?

Just wondering. Hope that makes sense.

There is a picture a few pages back of what that would look like. I would not advise it.

wow, have we still not seen any proper SSD comparison times!?

I'm limited to where I can buy from, if I can't get hold of an Evo 850 is there any reason I shouldn't get a Evo 840?
