Get your SSDs ready, PS4 Pro supports SATA3

It took me exactly 2 hours and 35 minutes to transfer 560GB over a lan cable. The actual full setup took a little longer than that but not bad at all.

Know this has probably been asked, if I already have a 1TB SSHD in my PS4 can I simply take that out and put it in my Pro and it will boot up without having to reset anything?

Nope. The drive is marked with a "fingerprint" that only the console it's from can recognize and use. You have to format the drive and reinstall firmware on the Pro, with the previous drive.

Got my order in for the 2TB Firecuda from Newegg. I'm still not convinced that a PS4 will make proper use of the SSD. If benchmarks prove me wrong I will send the SSHD back unopened and buy a SSD during Black Friday.

I'm actually not doing a direct link of the consoles, I'm doing it via network with two Ethernet cables. Works perfectly fine.

Is it better to transfer via ethernet with a router as an intermediary, or just a direct ethernet link between two consoles? Waiting for my 1 TB 7200 RPM SSHD to arrive before I start the transfer.

No. The drives are encrypted to their console. You would have to reformat. (Unless that's what you were planning -- in which case, yes.) EDIT: Beaten. Badly.

No you will need to back everything up to an external drive. Your drive will be wiped when you install it in the new console.

So the PS4 restore process took about four hours to get my old profiles and games installed on the Pro with my lovely 2TB Firecuda SSHD. I got everything set up and started flicking through games. I started getting some pauses in menu which was odd. Finally the PS4 hard locked and after a reset couldn't detect the SSHD anymore. I know with law of averages someone has to get a DOA unit but fark! Time to restore to my old PS4's 7200rpm 1TB and wait for a replacement on the SSHD.

ok, decided to just do a straight transfer via LAN - 461GB @ ~4hours estimated - off to bed, will post some loading times tomorrow comparing my old PS4 with SSHD vs the stock Pro FWIW.

I got a Samsung 850 1tb SSD in my new PS4 Pro. Initial test on two games of having long loading times.

Bloodbourne took me 7 seconds to load to initial graveyard safe zone. 13 seconds to Central yarham.

Styx, GREAT game minus the long load times. now its 9 seconds. YEAH!

Now i'm doing this super scientific with counting out One thousand, Two thousand, Three thousand, etc. But it seems like a great improvement to me.

So is an sad worth buying for this or no? What's the consensus? Thought DF said it wouldn't matter.

Edit: wait, I have an hybrid drive. Is the stock on the pro faster than my hybrid?

I think an SSD is a waste for a console that is designed to run with HDDs.

You get less storage and pay way more for little improvement in performance.

A console is not a PC, where you can download drivers and optimize everything at will

Yeah it was IMO a failing of Sony to not allow for SSD optimization

Its worth it.. don't be fooled.

I take speed over extra storage... I can not stand long loading times!! If I can cut them in half you best believe i will!

It took me 4 hours to restore 980gb over a USB 3.0 external drive.

By contrast, it took me 7 hours to backup the 980gb to the same drive with the USB 2.0 ports on the original PS4.

Backup/restore to the same hard drive.

Man, we really need a comparison of stock PS4 PRO HDD vs. FireCuda vs. SSD. I might buy a FireCuda and SSD just to do this, then return based on the results.

Edit: Alrighty, I ordered a SanDisk 960gb SSD and a FireCuda 1TB. Gonna test the Pro stock HDD vs. FireCuda vs. SSD tomorrow and draw some conclusions on value vs. performance. Will definitely post a comparison video.

Wonderful to see the benefits of an SSD. I just can't justify buying storage that costs over half the cost of the console though :(

I look at it as an investment. PS5 comes out and you'll be able to swap it in, plus it'll be designed around SATA3 from the ground up anyways.

Or if SSDs get cheap, buy a newarger one and delegate the old SSD to storage or NAS.

Years of use and hundreds of thousand of second saved will make it worth it for heavy gamers.

Only just noticed that my 2TB FireCuda shows as having 1.30 TB of space, that's total space not free space as it shows that I've used just under 1 TB and have 300 GBs of free space.

Any idea why this would be?

EDIT:
I'm going to try and reformat it on the PS4, if this doesn't work then I'll have to try reaching it in a USB can on my Mac.

EDIT 2:
Weird, reformatted the SSHD on the PS4 and it now shows the expected 1.76 TB of capacity. I wonder of there was an issue with the transfer from the old PS4 and it had somehow created a second partition? It all seemed to work fine as I was doing it so I don't understand why but that could, sort of explain that capacity loss. I'm glad it's back though, even though I have to download everything again. :)

If you're doing a transfer from another PS4, make sure you check the capacity after you've done it.

Is the xbox one elite sshd compatible with PS4 Pro? I would like to make a threeway shuffle (xb1e -> ps4 pro, ps4 pro -> ps4, ps4 -> xb1e) before selling the xbox one for an xbox one s (thanks sony for not using a proper 4k bluray drive :( )

My Firecuda installed just fine. I guess I did try starting the Pro fresh before transferring data from another console though. At a glance the most noticeable change (not sure if it's the Pro or SSHD) is that the game details panels on The PS4 UI are all snappy now. No hitches while it loads trophy info or other community stuff.

The hard drive in the Xbox One is not user removable. It might actually work in another console but you'd have to cannibalize the console to try it, which would make selling it later pretty difficult.

the 1.76 is correct. 2tb are actually about 1.82tb due to computers working in base 2.

So I will install a new HDD in the Pro then do the transfer.
1)download the 4.05 OS thing that is 800+ MB and put in a USB stick
2) swap the HDD
3) turn on the Pro in safe mode with the USB stick attached and install the OS
4) deactivate my old PS4
5) start the transfer from the Pro using Ethernet cable between the two PS4s

Something I have missed?

After reading up on those SSD numbers, ordered a 1TB Samsung Evo and installed it on the Pro tonight. Wow, Bloodborne sure loads pretty fast. Used to have a 1tb Hitachi 7200rpm on my old PS4.

You need to sync trophies

4) no need if you are doing a direct transfer as the Pro will ask if you want to deactivate old and activate new

I'm super happy with the transfer process altho I did have a issues starting it - but I think that was largely down to my son have a PS4 on the same network. This morning the Pro was essentially exactly like the old PS4 - everything done.

I did do a few loading test but unfortunately all times were around the same, coming out of standby went from 9 to 8 seconds but GTAV took 1:55 from clicking start to playing the game - that's comparing my 7200 SSHD with the stock Pro HDD - so certainly things are faster for loading in the Pro...think I've decided to go with the SSD in the end but still interested for more data
