Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

yes. but please... no more fucking dragons. come up with something else.
If ND's next game is a fantasy, it better have dragons and they better let us ride them like Danyrs.

I have played enough grounded games from ND. Time to go either Sci-fi or full on fantasy like Game of Thrones.

I am finding Stalker 2 to be a little underwhelming graphically speaking. I think I am starting to dislike UE5 in general
Yeah, its a mixed bag. Avowed also looks underwhelming. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra looks great on the other hand. We'll see how Witcher 4 will look.

Stalker 2 is a very understated game, to be fair, as it genuinely does take place in a post apocalyptic wasteland, so it’s mostly naturalistic and muted in its presentation. It works really well for someone like me, and I find the visuals to be absolutely stunning, but I can see how others may find it to be kind of flat.

To me at least, it’s one of the best looking open world games in fidelity and making things look like they genuinely belong there, or have been there for decades.

they didnt fix anything.

the issue isnt with SH2, its with PSSR and it will take Sony some time to train PSSR on RT games.

GT7's pro patch just came out and as expected PSSR cant handle Lumen, RTGI and other RT effects. We saw these same issues back when DLSS was in its early stages. Nvidia knew about it and made several presentations on how denoising RT effects can be tricky with upscaling techniques like DLSS. They eventually figured it out. Seems like Sony didnt do any research themselves.

It's not ue5 tho, the best looking games this year are all on ue5.

The problem with UE5 for me is how washed out everything looks, the screen looks like vaseline, and the ghosting is awful. I am seeing this in almost every single UE5 and Stalker has this issue as well. And keep in mind I am using a 4090 playing at 4k with DLSS quality and the game still looks washed out. I tried TSR but same issue

I think that lack of casting shadows when using flashlight hurts the overall look as well

I think the outdoors look much better than the indoors.

Indoors you start to see the cracks in the not-so-high geometry\not pristine textures more often and being in a closed space make you inevitably more close to every surface and the more you get close, the worse it looks (first person make everything even worse because you don't have to even zoom to see things from up close).

I have some problems with the ghosting in some games but i always thought it was a matter of dlss\framegen more than engine related.

Lucky for me, my brain barely notice flaws in lights and shadows, i'm more of an asset man.

i have never had any issues with washed out look in UE5 games. check your tv settings. Are you playing on a monitor?

4090 should be running all these UE5 games maxed out. What were your issues with black myth, hellblade 2 and silent hill 2 if you dont mind me asking?

I can understand last year's games underwhelming. I didnt particularly care about Remnant 2, Immortals and Robocop but this year we've seen some real stunners from UE5.

What about environment variety ? do the different locations feel distinct and hand crafted or not really ? looking at gameplay videos everything seems kind of samey but it's hard to judge without playing it

I’m only 3 hours in so far, so I haven’t ventured out of the first “zone” yet, but the map is absolutely massive. I don’t doubt that there will be various different biomes scattered throughout; I’ve already stumbled across a few different locales and underground points so far.

I think the game is carefully handmade crafted, maybe not rdr2 level, but who the fuck is? :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

But the intrinsic nature of the location can still look a bit samey, it's a nuclear devastated wasteland so you are not gonna have massive variation.

This is obviously not a game like fw that has like 15 different biomes in a single map.

But i'm still in the first portion of the map so who knows.

Just keep it mature

Yep, i want them to upgrade their violence tech, i don't want a regression.

They are too good at that to just give up.

I'm curious to see how gorey and realistic gta6 is gonna be, hopefully they don't go the cartoony way because the location is crazy and shit and bla bla bla.

I usually find dragons boring except in mh games, so i'm with you.

I just want nextgen creatures skin render, we have been stuck for a while now.

Noo, this is blasphemy, dragons are (one of) the most awesome creatures ever, only behind, of course, to the xenomorph.

Seriously though, they are handled very poorly in almost every game out there -- don't know for Monster Hunter, couldn't get into it -- , coming from the recent Dragon Age, they are the same, no personality, no different gameplay and moveset for different types of dragons and the designs are straight from Inquisition, no imagination whatsoever.

havent played it yet, but i love good visual "consistency"... when all the stuff just melds together properly on a visual level. when nothing sticks out.

ps silent hill 2 remake's decaying building interiors look excellent.
not the normal "old" buildings, but when you go into that alternate realm and stuff is suuuuper decayed.

This looks visually CGI like here for some reason, The density, animations etc.

Hmm
I didn’t want to sound hyperbolic about the visuals but I think it’s the GI. The GI gives it this good visual look even if the assets aren’t that good.

The visuals aren’t that good but the lighting makes everything look acceptable or even good at times.

I'm playing Outlaws and I'm really digging the visuals. Lighting and materials are very mpressive and give quite a natural and grounded look to the game. The environments outside the cities seems less impressive because it lacks the kinda of microdetail UE5 offers with Nanite (man, can't wait to see how The Witcher 4 looks) but even then the lighting helps make it look as good as can be.

PS: I'm playing with all RT effects on minus RTXDI.

Stalker 2 was an unfortunate letdown. Was really looking forward to experiencing this game after seeing gameplay vids. Played it for a couple hours and immediately knew it wasn’t for me. Happy for those who enjoy it. Honesty, graphically it’s a huge letdown ):

Bro, ND is done, half the gen passed and we didnt even get reveal cgi trailer of their new game.
That means even if they launch something this gen it wont come out earlier than 2026, and chances are, it will look like newest DA:V quality wise compared to their old games:messenger_weary: ( i know u bought and praised it, but lets be serious, previous DA won Game Awards 10 years ago, this one wasnt even nominated, tells u all u need to know how low quality of that game is at least from most ppl pov :p )

Finally picked the pro from the gs, the fuckers tried every trick to give me less money for my ps5.

a stain caused by their fucking stand and the ds5 drifting (with their software, in reality the controller has zero drift when you play).

I called my dude (he is the one in charge) and told him to fix this shit, so good to have friends in key job positions 🕺

But they didn't had the disc drive available, they are gonna call when it arrive, i'm in no rush, the first game i'm gonna play on pro is sushi2 or gta6:lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Rockstar looks to have retained their ambition. Maybe nd will do the same.

I’m still waiting on the E3 2018 version of TLOU 2 for PS5….

It can’t be hard for Naughty Dog to literally update the game with this version…
they admitted in the TLOU2 doc that it was all faked.

that ubisoft dev who called it all scripted and was hounded by ND fanboys was right after all.

you didnt get it on the ps5 because they werent limited by the gpu or the cpu, they were limited by the fact that it never existed in the game and was scripted or faked by the devs.

never forget ND faked this too and claimed it was realtime running at 1080p 60 fps.

these guys are the biggest bullshit artists in the business. they get away with it because their games end up looking better than most other devs, but these guys like and cheat like the best(Worst?) of them.

MFS2024. Now that it's starting to work as it should, the visual result is insane.

The leap in visual fidelity compared to FS2020 is incredible at times, beyond some inconsistencies when "inventing" buildings and constructions.

My surprise was seeing that it also updates urban areas when you go down to the ground and not just natural areas...😮

I hope we got a new gta vi trailer soon
I think the VGA season typically brings new footage. I am really hoping to see Marvel's 1943, i have a bad feeling that the game will be a QTE fest like Detroit instead of a real game.

Sony hasnt shown up at the VGA's in the last few years, but death stranding should be a lock. Kojima loves keighley.

Witcher 3 was revealed at the VGA in 2013 iirc so its possible CD Project also shows up there.

I want to see Fable. MS loves the VGAs and its their biggest 2025 game so hopefully it shows up there too.

If i get those 4 games and a gameplay teaser from rockstar i will be a happy man.

CD Projeckt said at the end of last August that the next The Witcher was still in the preproduction phase and will soon enter full production so the game is not coming out before the end of this generation and again it is in the optics if the development goes perfectly which is never really the case with CD Projekt so I expect that the project will be delayed.

I don't think they will show anything this year especially if the game still hasn't entered full production.

current rumors are saying next month. NOT the VGA's, its too big for that- (they also skipped that show last year and dropped the trailer the day before the VGA's.)

but itll be a year since trailer 1. trailer 2 a year later makes sense.

Phil Spencer talking about not being able to grow the console userbase got me thinking. You have around 200-250 million people who buy consoles every generation. Nintendo has lost around 100 million units since they merged their handheld and console business, but lets just ignore the handheld business for now and look at Sony and MS. Sony sold 150 million PS2s, Xbox sold 20 million Xboxs. Thats 170 million. Then Sony and MS both sold around 85 million units. Thats 170 million. Then Sony sold 120 million PS4s, Xbox sold 50 million. Thats 170 million. This generation Sony is lagging behind 10 million behind PS4 and Xbox is also 10 million behind with around 25 million so far and will probably finish around 30-35 million. Sony should finish around 100 million. They wont even hit 150 million this gen.

And why? Why cant we grow? Why are we shrinking?

I cant help but think it's because we've been making the same games since the PS360 era. nothing has changed. Non gamers look on and see the same shit they saw and rejected in mid to late 2000s. Half Life 2 documentary was released yesterday for its 20th anniversary and I was like we still dont have a shooter thats topped a 20 year old game. Forget topped, we are still following the same formulaic template that was designed back in 2004. Where is the innovation? What do we need to do to bring new blood into this industry?

I dont know if physics or destruction or a next gen GTA3 like sandbox game is going to be enough to get people excited about playing on consoles again. But clearly, stuff like Horizon FW, Hellblade 2, Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar, Astrobot, or even Silent Hill 2 which is literally GOTY caliber is not enough to attract new players.

I have two brothers. They played some racing games and GTA back in the day then completely moved on. My younger brother got into Warzone during covid but while i gave him access to my entire PS4 and PS5 library, none of the games clicked with him. Not even GOW or GTA5. Gaming isnt for everyone but these guys didnt stick around despite gaming fairly regularly in the PS2 era. And its because the games simply havent given them this MUST PLAY holy shit feeling GTA did back in the day.

I think devs have found a blueprint for modern games and are sticking to it. The result is safe formulaic games that appeal to an ever shrinking userbase and a complete lack of innovation. Stifling the industry in a state of arrested development.
“Nintendo have lost 100 million sales”

ROFL. What an absolute cope. Dude the Wii U and 3DS sold 90 million combined. By Jan 1st Switch will have sold 150 million. That’s a gain of 60 million.

Also companies are more interested in yearly subscriptions and digital sales than selling boxes nowadays. Nintendo have made close to $30 billion from Switch which is more than their prime days of Wii + DS hardware + software combined…

that sucks. 4 years of pre-production is retarded. insane that a massive studio like this wont have anything ready to show 4 years after launching their last game. just goes to show how poorly these studios are run. i work at a software engineering firm. my entire company would be shutdown if all we released for 4 years was a single piece of DLC or an add-on lol.

N64 - 33 million.
Gamecube - 22 million.

It's funny that Wii was a "fluke" at the time and now you're using the EXCEPTION NOT THE RULE to try and make your dumb point make sense.

Again Nintendo have NEVER made more money or been as successful as they're right now with Switch. COPE.

I think in total volume, Nintendo likely has limited their total sales potential by combining both divisions. I think it is well established that since mobile phones, handhelds peeked with the DS and is likely never to be repeated. If you combine the PS3 and the PSP you get similar numbers to the PS2 so the market has decreased in total. However in actual money made, the Switch is without doubt their most successful system. Not only are the sales of first party games insane, but the console is still being sold out £300 where I could have bought both a Wii and a DS for half that by this point in the generation.

No your point was just because Spencer is turning strategy for the fourth time in the last decade by saying “chasing console sales is silly” all the while his company struggles to sell 30 million in four years (when at times almost giving Series S away for free) we should all think consoles are dying. They’re not. They have and will have to evolve much like Switch or PS Portal.

Sony and Nintendo can sell 250-300 million consoles between them with Xbox’s help as a third party while everyone makes good money.

Yup. This is factually Nintendo’s most profitable generation ever. And as a company they’ve only scratched the surface in terms of monetising their IP outside of gaming.

People shouldn’t listen to uncle Phill yell at clouds just because Xbox peaked circa 2009 with the 360, Halo 3 and the CoD multiplayer explosion. No one cares about their IP outside of 10 million hardcore fans which is not enough to sustain a console ecosystem.

The big issue with games this generation is Unreal Engine 5 and it’s features came a console generation too early because they’re simply not powerful enough to use all the features at one time meaning it’s been letdown after letdown outside of high end PC since the first UE5 demos / The Matrix Awakens.

This always bothered me a lot. For the longest time they always used 'rendered in real-time on a PlayStation x', and it was always bullshit.

Still, I deeply want for my brain to melt watching their next game reveal. Even if it's downgraded, the dream sensation will be enough. lol.

Nope, my point was that the lack of innovation in the industry is whats causing it to stagnate. I specifically said that we are not growing, and may even be shrinking.

And they are all making profits. All three of them. Especially sony who has literally never been more profitable. And yet we are in a state of panic with layoffs, studio shutdowns, unproductive studios, and constant cutting with THE most risk averse publishers ive ever seen in my 30 years following this medium. If you think the industry is healthy then there is nothing to talk about because you and I completely disagree with the basic premise of my post. If you are ok with where the industry is, especially Nintendo which has literally forced its devs to release games on 2005 era hardware then thats ok. We disagree on the most fundamental level.

I hold nintendo devs to a very high regard, and that's precisely why it breaks my heart to see them slave away on 20 year old hardware. Their hands tied behind the backs. Their vision tied behind 15 watts handhelds and 190 gflops gpu. Their growth stunted by a publisher that despite being profitable is still unwilling to increase the budget of its games, size of its studios and their ambitions because they simply dont get the revenues from third party games that simply cannot run on the switch. you can call switch a console all you want but they just went 8 years without 99% of the big AAA games that made sony and ms billions. Some of which they were willing to fund back into ambitious projects of their own. they are profitable enough to keep churning out games like zelda echos of wisdom and mario brotherhood but in this thread, we hold devs to a higher standard.
