Microsoft reverses some recent Xbox Live bans

A number of people who were recently banned by Microsoft from its Xbox Live console gaming service have now had those bans reversed. Microsoft's Major Nelson web site has more info about this situation which first occurred between August 29 and September 9. Stephen Toulouse, the head of Xbox Live's Policy and Enforcement team, said that at the time the people who were affected by the bans were thought to have modded Xbox 360 consoles which Microsoft doesn't allow on Xbox Live.

However, after the people who were banned expressed their concerns about Microsoft's actions, Toulouse said, " ... after an initial investigation we have confirmed that a handful of banned consoles did in-fact appear to not have been modified or tampered with. We’re still conducting our review but the cause appears to be a software issue, not an error on the part of the enforcement team’s normal actions." Toulouse said that the bans only affected a small percentage of Xbox Live's total users.

Toulouse personally apologized to those affected by the erroneous Xbox Live bans, saying, "You have my assurance that we are investigating how this error occurred and have since discontinued use of the software that was used." He added that the people who had their bans reversed will also receive compensation. Specifically he said, " ... we will issue the primary account holder on the impacted console a credit for three months of Xbox LIVE Gold and 1600 Microsoft points." The total price for both items amounts to about $45 ($25 for the three Xbox Live Gold months and $20 in Microsoft points).

I believe one of my friends was banned through this. Still have to ask him and see if he's unbanned, he honestly didn't do anything either and they said the same thing as in the article.

I wish I got banned.

I know someone who was banned, he had no idea why was told by support that his console was modded and it wasnt in any way, basically told it is unreverseable and no more info can be given

He ended up buying another 360 a few weeks ago and today his old one was unbanned

Like he said having 1600 mspoints and 3 month gold is no conpensation for having to buy another console, hopefully MS put him right

lol, wow. So he gets banned unfairly and he responds by rewarding MS with another $300?

Where are all those people who cry that false positives for XBL bans are a myth? Haven't been on Live in a while but I hope I was part of that ban wave.

Microsoft isn't liable for that. I mean, it's a shitty situation, but it's not something he was forced to do.

At least he could sell the unbanned one or something.

After getting randomly and wrongly banned, I think the last course of action I would think to do is give more money to that company.

Hmm, I think I may have been a part of this - for whatever reason I couldn't use any Live features over the past few weeks, but as of yesterday everything's been working fine.

I don't understand this kind of thinking. So what would you suggest he did with his games, DLC and accessories?

Sell it off. Whatever. I know I wouldn't be happy to buy another product after the first one was inexplicably turned into a paperweight.

Like how everyone sold their Sony products after PSN was hacked?

Or he enjoys playing online with a community of people, personally i wouldnt of purchased one so quickly but he was told bans are totally unreversable and no info given on why

I dont think i ever said that he is legally owed something for buying a new console but corporate responsibilty should mean that when you are told something is permbanned and no way to undo and is then unbanned MS take some responsibilty for loyal consumers

lol @ the Sony comparison. PSN was down for a month because of some assholes (and Sony as well), while this was a lifetime ban because of MS.

The service being down is different than your console being (seemingly permanently) banned when you did nothing wrong, obviously.

Or he had already made a large enough investment in the platform and buying a ps3 and all the games again would have been more expensive? Just guessing of course, but personally I can see myself doing the same thing because I own a bunch of games and dlc.

Christ people, I'm not defending MS here - my point was that it's not unheard of for people to keep supporting companies that do shitty things/let shitty things happen to consumers, or let other nefarious deeds happen in their name. Bought any corn products recently?

I think the main reason was 95% of our community plays on xbox every week, same for his kids friends

There's a huge difference.

All of PSN was down. Nobody targeted me specifically when the PSN was hacked, and it wasn't Sony that did it anyway.

In this case, Microsoft was specifically targeting and banning people for no reason. If I was specifically targeted like that by the company I pay money to, they would no longer get my money.

That did not take long - Ladies and Gents I present you the moron of the thread.

Care to explain reasons for calling man a "moron"?

Just asking, nothing more. Thanx in advance.

Not to be condescending or anything, but it sounds like he wants to be the type of person who likes to follow people instead of doing the right thing by setting an example of what not to do.

And what not to do is support a company who wronged you in a drastic way. Getting your Xbox 360 turned into a brick isn't a good feeling.

Are you part of any online community on psn? doesnt sound like it or at least one you value

That's more than a leap of logic. "He really likes Xbox, he's happy being part of the system!"

You said you would not buy a product that had been banned, the reason he did was becuase he is part of a communmity that is 95% xbox which is posted maybe you missed it
