Playstation Portal - The ULTIMATE play guide (UPDATED)

I had this happen to me a few days before the pre-order for the Midnight Black Portal went live.

700+ hours without any issues and suddenly the right stick just stopped over the verticle axis.

So rn waiting til next week for my Portal to arrive. Kinda sucks as now my gametime is more limited and hopefully they improved on the issue.

Might send my original Portal to Sony at a later date, then I'll have 2 Portals for the price of 2.5, I suppose.🤷🏾‍♂️
Well, shit...
How long did it last btw ? Just send it back man to get it fixed.

Also : yeah, I think I'm gonna keep playing through my tablet, I don't have the time for this shit (stick drift)

How? I thought this wasn't possible anymore.

It's possible but it requires a "trick" :

- You have to have 2 accounts on your PS5.

- You have to sign-in to the different/secondary account on your streaming device and when you get asked who's trying to log-in, you then select your normal/primary account.

It's a neat trick since you can have haptics this way which are not supported yet on Android and also, it's way less of a ball breaker since you don't have to sync your DS to your tablet/phone and then having to re-sync it to the PS5.

Not sure what you mean by how long it lasted?
I've had it since day 1, if that's what you mean.

There's more people with similar issues, but not sure how widespread it is.

Yeah, I meant how long you had your portal till the stick started going south...

Man, this shit is so random, I had my Dualsense from the GOW Ragnarok bundle for 1.5 years with no problems whatsoever and yet, the DS that came with my Pro broke down/died in 2 months...
I just can't pull the trigger again on a portal brother because of that, I mean, if a joypad breaks down you can just use a spare one until it gets fixed, but a whole console like the portal ? Don't know man...
(I waited 17 days to get my DS back from Sony).

Also, since you're also in Europe, does the Portal have 1 or 2 years of warranty ? Every electronic device is covered by a 2 year one here in Euroland but on Sony's site it says 1 ? How's that possible ?

According to the Dutch government website, people have a right to a minimum of 2 year warranty, but might require the consumer to report the fault within 2 months of discovery.

it literally is... but less cumbersome in fact, and it also works with Xbox remote play, Steam remote play, GeForce Now and so on.

so not the same... better

Those are horrible. If you are going to go that route then the "best" option is Razer Kishi or Backbone, both of which cost a bit more. Either way, claiming that clip on is "less cumbersome" is simply not true.

Regardless, the "best" option for PS5 is PS Portal. The one size fits all solution has compromises such as having to use your phone which limits its use while playing.

Played a ton on my portal today. Fantastic.

Tomorrow is the real test though. How it works connecting to my phone to remote play. I typically get 700+ Mbps down and 100+ Mbps up on my phone when at work via cellular.
Just tested it out using my phone as a hotspot. Works flawlessly. Very pleased.

Still only playing RE5 though. Once I’m done trying to 100% it, I will move on to my backlog.

Pro-tip for those using a phone hotspot:
Go to your hotspot settings and set the connection/band to 5GHz for better results.

PS: depending on your phone/android version/skin, you might have 2.4GHz only, 2.4GHz + 5GHz combined, 5GHz and even 6GHz (If your phone supports it).

the best other option is this:
61-Cx4uDN8L._AC_UF894,1000_QL80_FMwebp_.jpg

which is 15 bucks and covers 100% of the portal's functionality

This is far, FAR from being the "best" option, in fact it might actually be the worst :

- No vibration/haptics via BT (nor USB OTG)

- Having to pair the DS to your phone and then to the PS5 back again (which is done using the provided USB type C cable)

- Small screen real estate - and with added black bars on top due to the different aspect ratio.

- Phone battery life : have fun trying to charge your phone two to three times per day

- Absolutely horrible ergonomics : wrists get fucked up because of the phone's weight after a couple of minutes.

One of the best alternatives is the backbone/kishi but...those cost 100+ Eurodollars (for 3 pieces of plastic eh?) at which point you'd be better off with a Portal since it's its own device.

He make these posts then disappear into the shadows only to return in the next Portal thread with the same thing.

I used my phone as a hotspot to play classic/turn based games because their demand are slower and you can deal better with input lag (and it's working better than I expected, because my phone connection is a bit crappy).

It worked very well and I'm starting to build a Portal/"Mobile" library

Oh, my connection is rock solid. I never had a problem remote playing for the PS5 or Xbox Series X on my phone+backbone. The major difference now is the phone is the middle man.

No issues with input lag here. I’m playing RE5 and I just completed the car section that has ton of QTE’s and the troll portion, which too had a ton of QTE’s. I did notice for the first 5-10 seconds that the resolution wasn’t as good as at home, but then it normalized and looked just as crisp.

Does anyone use a charging stand or traveling case? Any recommendations? I see a lot of different options on Amazon, and to be honest, they all seem pretty cheap.
I got a cheap case for Christmas, think it cost $15 (amazon) Totally fine, it's rigid inside and has a cover for the screen. I suspect it will hold up just fine under in travel situations.

I think im doing that already with an extender that has an Ethernet port connected to my ps5. The extender doubled my speeds to roughly 650 mb/s but I still get a hit of choppiness and interruptions

I can’t locate the router near my ps5
Here in Germany I use a technology called "Powerline", which transfers the data via the power cables installed in your house.
It is not a perfect technology and its performance depends on several details you can not really influence, but maybe it serves you better then your attempt, in which 2 devices fight over the same Wifi frequencies to send a lot of data vulnerable to timing.

If it is available at you place, maybe you can give it a try?
