Well, if you're counting ZSS and Sheik as "completely-different" characters, then there would be 39 characters, since there are 3 pokemons as well >_>
Sheik and (probably) ZSS can be played independently of Zelda/Samus, but we still don't know how the stamina mechanic works. If it gets to the point of forced switching (which is what I'm assuming), then I'm not sure I can call Squirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard separate because they all rely on each other 100%.

But you're right. It would be 39 if players can basically "main" a single PT Pokemon without any significant penalty, and that would be a totally cool roster size with me. :D

WHY DAMMIT WHY. I have to ask this every time. You would have less characters than more?
Young Link is not amused.

I figured that due to the massive first-player mode, there would not be a gargantuan amount of levels and characters as some would have wished. If the modes were less prominent, perhaps I would be dissapointed.

I'll start with character analysis.

Well, 35 is an increase of 10 over the last set of characters, not as big a growth as from SSB to Melee (12 to 25). However, we have to note that characters from the past have been changed as well with new moves (Mario for example) and Final Smashes to go with them. Not to mention removed Melee characters. This probably accounted for the slowed growth. But hey! It's growth nonetheless.

Notice how Melee had 14 at the start and grew to 25 (11 secret characters)
If 35 is correct, and we consider only being told 2 secret characters so far:
Then Brawl starts off with 21 characters and grows to 35 (14 secret characters)
That does make some sense, having more characters at the start than secret characters. Just a little thought my head got.

We know of the 23 selectable characters so far

Looking at the remaining Melee Characters, I see the following:

Jigglypuff - This character has been in it since the beginning, and I recall that Snake's VA had an interview saying that Jigglypuff was his favorite, just about confirming it.

Captain Falcon - If not CF, then we'll get another F-Zero character, but either way, we have seen Red Alloy copy his moves as always. A telling sign.

Luigi - I keep hearing people spew that they've seen a frame of something akin to A Luigi's Mansion level, but I'm not spreading that around. I know that he's in it because he's the brother of Mario and has diversified himself beyond clone status over the last generation. Whether Sakurai does that remains to be seen.

Game & Watch - I'm certain this is the last franchise in the "Melee" section of the logos. If he's not in it, a level certainly will be. He's too wacky to remove for some, too.

Ganondorf - IIRC, he was said to be brought to Sakurai in an interview with the Zelda producer. Either way, I expect him refitted to TP much like the others and perhaps de-clonified to include his sword for once.

Young Link - I have a feeling he'll be back, too, but not in any TP form. Due to Phantom Hourglass's Japanese success and the obvious popularity of this WW style, I think he will be de-clonified and given WW-esque moves. A trophy of him wearing normal clothes may be evidence against him, but it was mostly a trophy to discuss his clothing, not link himself.

Then these I'm unsure of:

Marth - Ike looks very much like him, but Fire Emblem DS is coming out, and I'm sure he has quite a following, too, both in American and Japan.

Falco - He's a clone, whether you want to argue it or not. He's different but not different enough. He does have popularity, though. Whether this can help keep his foothold as the second Starfox versus Krystal, though, is unknown.

Mewtwo - He was a cool concept of a character, but a lot of negativity arose about his balance compared to the rest. Perhaps retooling his moves would be best. Or replacing him with a different pokemon altogether?

The Definite Outs for me:

Ness - I'm a Ness-lover, loved him on SSB and Melee, but I see little reason for his return with Lucas here. I believe Sakurai himself said he was going to replace Ness with Lucas for Melee but Mother 3 did not release yet. If anything, the two are terribly similar that keeping Ness in and another Melee fighter out would be a shame. Well, not all other melee fighters.

Pichu - I played as him a bit, being a random-player and all, but seriously, he's weaksauce. A clone for the sake of being a clone, and a pretty weak one at that. Faster but weak. I doubt he's back unless clones are back, which I doubt.

Dr. Mario - As I said above, he's too similar to Mario, and I'd rather have a new character in his place. He's interesting, but he could be made into an AT just as well, too.

Roy - Ike is more recent, and Marth is more well-known and also upcoming. So, his purpose seems rather blah. That and he'd be too much like Marth if both were included.

32 characters right there. That leaves 3, or more if the "meh" ones above don't actually appear. Like I said, if Krystal takes precedent over Falco, she's in. Ridley is looking quite unlikely for a character but rather a boss for SSE. Geno *could* be an AT or a character, with all the moves he has, PLUS we still have that other franchise in question. I have a feeling Animal Crossing actually DOESN'T have a character. No DS character either. Mii as a secret "surprise" character could be funny, too.

So, it's up in the air, really.

Someone made that interview up, or claims to have.
Really!?

That's weird, since its not much of an interview to make up.

I guess when there was no further news on the subject, maybe it was...???

Didn't I yell at you for this. I can't keep track. Too many threads.

Edit: wait, yes I did. And it was in this thread.
Carry on.

The animal crossing interview thing was made up, complete with a blurry photo of an old Animal Crossing WW Famitsu article if I remember correctly

what i mean is that if any of the previous clone characters come back, i hope that they actually have their own moves.

Somebody here post Nintendrone`s leaked list. That list, posted early or mid december, had Shiek and Olimar listed in the order they were revealed in and I think the number count was spot on with this new rumor.

If it`s true, Jigglypuff or Krystal are next on the dojo.

I`m aware Nintendrone has claimed to be a fake, but you never know.

Where does the new title come from?

Comes from MarkMan, one of the new supposed "leakers" on the scene.

In lieu of how he has yet to have anything or any one to truly disprove him, he's safe...for the moment. But I'mma just have to wait and see if he's got any weight to what he says, because, as far as I'm concerned, he's just another random face. When he's got some serious credentials to his credit (like Serebii), or has actually reported something that came to pass (like the guy who got the Dragoon down pat), then maybe I'll be ready to believe him.

Just read the past few pages. He seems credible enough and the prediction isn't too outlandish. If it is true, man, I'll be extremely happy. I honestly thought we had seen all the characters once Dedede had been revealed.

You did not just say that the guy who steals information and posts whatever the fuck he wants without any proof (ololol, not the starters for fourth gen, april fools sixth months after!) is credible. Serebii Joe is one of the least credible sources for information possible. All his pokemon info is cribbed from other, better sites, that which isn't made up outright.

Given MarkMan's history, I believe him and it makes sense too.\

I'm calling the original 4 secret characters are going to be in again (Luigi, Jiggy, Cap'n Falcon, Ness) making 27. Then melee characters that will come back fo sho will be Falco and Ganondorf. That would be 29.

Ain't too sure about Marth(Due to how Ike would be reping the Fire Emblem series by himself without him and Marth's fanbase.),Mr. Game and Watch(name is pretty much confirmed to come on series list on the Dojo if you pay attention to that so yeah, it's either him appearing or his stage), and Mewtwo(might be in if he isn't replaced by another pokemon but he is almost in the not expected section for me.)

Dr.Mario, Pichu, Young Link(not talking about WW Link), and Roy definitely aren't going to be in.

So could be 32 plus new 3 characters or <32 plus new characters. The new characters I'm really expecting to be in is WW Link

Ouch, just counted. A little bit more than I thought. We`ll see. Fellow gaf member, HotisCold (something like that), did imply wild happenings to come.

Thanks, Gaimeguy. Hopefully Isaac makes it.

I'm shocked people expect Falco to make a return. It could just as easily be Peppy or Slippy....or Krystal. There is no way we'll get three Starfox characters, and I think two is even pushing it.

I am not to sure about WW Link, though that would be kickass. I think and wish its Midna

Ness: I don't see why people expect him, at all. He has no moveset potential - all of his moves would either be clones or non-damaging moves.

Falco: People, please, does Star Fox really NEED two reps? I'd much rather see a new series rep than another Star Fox rep, especially considering his popularity.

I agree that 3 seems like a lot. But the only character that even remotely competes with Falco for a Star Fox spot is Krystal. The only question in my mind is how much potential Falco has for an original moveset, since Krystal has the staff.

The reason I'm sticking with Ness and Falco being in is Sakurai said about over a year ago way early in development that he would include the whole original cast from the first game. Things could have easily changed going with Lucas instead of Ness but two reps is more probable to me since most veteran series in Smash have two reps. Falco is a pretty big character in the Star Fox series, he was a immensely popular character in Melee, especially in the pro scene, and having two teps for the series is more likely.

MarkMan is legit, guys

Again, I'll just wait n see if the proof is indeed in the pudding.

After all, if he's telling us this much, why is he not already under attack by some Ninty Ninjas? Telling numbers, especially "correct ones", would, I would think, immediately alert the information police...unless this was an "indirect red herring".

Falco is a tournament favorite, and Brawl seems to be designed far more with tournaments in mind. He also felt less "clone"-like than some of the other clones. (Except for maybe Ganondorf.) That said, he'll probably get changed up quite a bit.

The way people are doing the math in this thread, which seems to make sense, 35 does seem like a low number. Presuming most of the Melee characters make a return, unless a lot of them are graced with very new move sets, that's a lot of "old" padding the unlockables side of the game, and there's a big difference between the "old" coming from Smash 64 into Melee, versus Melee going into Brawl. Then again, I thought the Melee leak seemed too small and unambitious as well...

I think I would be pretty happy with the Nintendrone list. It's got enough fan favorites and unique characters to make it interesting. Especially since it includes more villains, something Melee blatantly lacked.

I agree. If people are fine with vets returning with almost unchanged movesets, they should be ecstatic for any new characters regardless of clonage.

That said, I really hope that should Mr. G&W, Falco, or any pokemon aside from Pika/Jiggles return it's with serious overhauling. They never really seemed like anything more than gimmicky characters, stuff thrown in for naught but fanservice. If they get fleshed out into different characters that's cool, but I'm of the opinion that jokes are less funny the second time around.

Ooh, how about the fact that he's been an established part of this community about three years longer than you and is willing to risk a permanent ban on a roster "leak" that isn't even outlandish or spectacular (no names, just numbers) and isn't linked to his blog to bring in hits?

Based on his post history he's pretty high profile in at least the GAF Tekken community if not the larger Tekken community.

Game & Watch is the most underappreciated, underrated character in the game. People pick him once, flip sausages, laugh, then never play as him ever again. He's got his problems but he's far from the unplayable joke that people claim he is. One of the most creative, original characters in Melee-- I'll be sad if he doesn't return, hopefully with a defensive overhaul.

And how in the world can you lump Jigglypuff in there? She's an original Smasher with a very unique playstyle, and generally just a really good character.
