TCL Technology have said that a new Xbox Series S/X and PS5 Pro are coming in 2023/2024

No reason not to do it. Upcharge the hardcore and get a little extra profit. But if they are out in 2023 we might even get another Pro upgrade later this gen.

How many would sell and then you have developers who have to take advantage of it? So now you have to spend more money on testing on a new console. It is too early for that.

Personally, I'd like to see a console added to the lineups at a higher price point. Maybe a $1K XSXSuper that combined some of the manufacturing savings associated with a console with hardware that is more competitive than the $500 price point can allow. Would have to be manufactured with the understanding that it might not sell as many units as the lower priced units, like the elite controller.

I wouldnt mind that too.

But you'll get push back from the traditional console gamer who wants one set of hardware. The kinds of gamers who dont like knowing some gamers have better specs, which may relate to faster gameplay. So in MP matches, maybe those gamers with better specs (like PC cross platform play) get a small advantage.

Yet in PC gaming with a million configs, no PC gamers seem to give a shit if a lobby has RTX 3000 gamers and some guys on a mid range laptop all playing together.

Don’t see the point when most of the games coming are still cross gen.

Elden Ring, Horizon FW and God of war Ragnok can/will play fine on the PS5 so what’s the point of dropping another $600 on a pro console, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Think of the ps5 as a computer with a Ryzen 3600 and a GF 2070. Nobody in creation would think this system that was mid tier 4 years ago is some powerhouse of any kind that doesnt need upgrading. Nobody except console only users that is. ps5 and series x are not very strong or capable. Even though we havent had many next gem games, they cant even handle old gen games without a million compromises in details and resolution. Even thouth this article is bullshit and its not a confirmation of anything, people should absolutely want stronger systems than what we have now. But i dont think there's gonna be mid gen refreshes, the last time it was because of 4k tv's exploding.

Nice. Will perfectly time with me getting a new TV by then.

That 8k part could be a bummer. All that power funneled to 8k games. And by that time how many gamers will even have 8k tvs?
I have one and it sucks that there's no content. Sony doesn't even have a 8K player like it used to. (it had a dedicated 4K player for older 4K TVs to play Netflix content in 4K and other apps) PS5 Pro needs a 48Gbps HDMI output though. It's ridiculous that HDR is gimped for 120hz resolution.

I know this thread is about new console revisions and not the TVs, but I thought I'd mention that there is a benefit to 8K televisions that isn't related to performance. 8K televisions can do integer scaling of 1440p inputs, which 4K TVs aren't capable of. There are quite a few games that render natively at 1440p. A game like Mafia Definitive Edition, which is 1440p on Series X can output without console scaling. This gives a very clean image on a 1440p display and would map 3x3 to an 8K display. This wouldn't be much help to Playstation owners currently, but I have faith that Sony will eventually add this capability to their consoles.

"Buy an 8k tv so Mafia Definitive Edition scales better" I can see that on the next LG Oled campaign.

I agree, mid gen refresh's are the way forward for sure. It's just...2023 doesn't seem like it'll be midway through anything. This generation has barely gotten started, not just time wise but also content.
You're probably right. 2023 may be too soon, but 2024 won't be. With new PC GPU's releasing soon it's going to be frustrating for console gamers to have to continue to choose 30 fps quality or (hopefully) 60 fps performance at lower res in games. If we're already seeing hardware being taxed to the point where we're having to make that choice in the cross-gen phase I don't hold much hope that ditching last gen is going to make that limitation go away.

About the time I want to get a PS5 finally.. so either I snag a pro or I snag a basic model cheaper from someone who snagged a pro.

I would only like this if they actually took advantage of them.

But they probably wouldn't as much as they should/could, and then you are already in the realm of a PC pricing in which you can scale the settings yourself.

Won’t get an upgrade.

Maybe if they’d do a Series S2 or something that had just a little more GPU grunt, memory and storage. I could see that being a pretty good upgrade.

Oh a power point presentation that speculates on what happened last time, not taking into account global shortages? TCL's official source:

All I can see in the next 2 years is a revision of the consoles. Like the little bump from XB1 to XB1 S.

HeisenbergFX4 for those who know you
a long time it seems that lately you avoid to share anything from your sources (and some of us know that you have alot..).
Is there a reason or you simply not want to engage in some conversations that in the past had you in a very bad situation?
I simply ask you because you seem like a very nice person...

It's possible that Sony is potentially looking at tapping other facilities (TCL included) to assemble the PS5? I'd imagine that Foxconn is pretty well slammed as far as how much they can assemble of the various products they do. Maybe someone had discussions? Or, this could just be pure speculation. Either way, I am day one for a PS5 Pro.

We’ve barely had any games that aren’t slightly better looking PS4 titles come out and they think we’re getting pro consoles? For what? Better a bit better looking PS4 titles? This gen has been a bit of a joke overall. Consoles you can’t buy and when you do barely anything to play on them.

As if TCL would leak upgraded gen 9 consoles.

This is most likely a guess on their part to sell higher end TVs. Absolutely nothing official about this.

Fn consoles haven't even hit their stride and we talking pro versions. Ridiculous.

No one needs 8K either. Maybe we can improve other things intead of pushing more pixels.

After the abysmal sales of the PS1 Classic for likely the same reason, and they have the nerve to deliver a second slap in the face to their fans.

I think it's just a calculated speculation.

I have always thought they're coming anyway, probably after the supply issues have been resolved. I expect they will come around 2024 onwards, not 2023.

You mean 4:2:2 is gimping HDR on the PS5? You do know that UHD Blu-ray uses 4:2:0 and noone claims that's gimping their HDR, right?

Right. I didn't know the US was backing Intel AND tsmc though... I need to pay more attention. They say they will produce chips in Arizona by 2024, so we will see.
I believe Samsung is opening a new plant in Texas as well.

The whole Taiwan situation has created a run on foundries. Seeing how involved Biden has been involved personally. I wouldn't be surprised if some backdoor deal was made between the US and China. Something along the lines of the US telling China "If you invade Taiwan, we're going to war because we're dependent on those chips. But if you give us a few years to build our own foundries stateside, then we wouldn't be so hardline opposed to an invasion."

Don't get me wrong, the US would still oppose an invasion, and might likely send weapons similar to the Ukraine situation, but not boots on the ground. Who really knows, but pay attention about a year or so after all these US plants go online. My bet is that China's posturing about Taiwan increases, while the US's posturing slowly becomes less supportive of Taiwan.

Or did you forget to ask me?
Ok, I should have rephrased that to say "No proper video expert claims it.". 4:2:2 only matters for PC use where you have subpixel AA that is gimped with this. Besides, it has nothing to do with HDR anyway.

I feel cheated.
Almost nothing came out on ps5, it was hard to get and now PRO will come out just next year ?!
No.... thank you.

I don't like the idea of Pro consoles anyway. Further market fragmentation and expenses. I miss the idea of one console for many years

More like Fall 2024, 2 and 1/2 years from now.
