I just read the critical reception over at gamasutra. Is this game good for non-hardcore fighting fans? The vibe I got is that it is. What's the GAF consensus ?

so compared to sf4 how hard do you think this game is for a "beginner" ? I never liked or played many bemus (beside soul calibur) before SF4 but after many houers @ sf 4 i got quiet good with some charackters (sakura etc.)

Now i ordered blazblue . - so am i going to hate this or will it be fun ;P ?

cheers

Happy to see a lot of people buying the game... curious, what led you guys to jump in and make that purchase?
Looks unique, the combat moves at a good pace but not insanely fast, and I was tired of the amateurish online system SF4 uses.

Plus I was getting bored with the 50 second Honda/Boxer staredowns.

Whoa wait a minute, Guilty Gear renamed?

This game is so not GG. This game is it's own beast.

No, it's guilty gear renamed. Yes it has different qualities, but it's pretty much spiritually GG and shares a shit ton of qualities.

I mean really what's different?

-No FRCs
-One button missing, and dust sorta replaced with drive attacks
-Faultless defense/Barrier uses it's own meter now.
-Uses Burst now puts you into a danger mode
-Ground recoverys
-New characters (which you could of thrown into a new version of gg too)
-Instant kills(which were useless) replaced with Astral finshers (which sound almost as useless)

Also I wonder if BB has jump installs... I should figure that out.

I remember enjoying GGXX even though I sucked at it. And I heard it had a good story mode which I am a sucker for in fighting games.

Street Fighter will always be my fighting series and is also far easier to pull out to play with people who don't play fighting games, but this is a fun distraction.

Haven't even attempted to play online. I'm just trying to get 100% story mode completion. Maybe join a gaf tournament (and lose badly) and then move on to a new game.

MarkMan vs Ferrio! should be good.

Eh, I'm not going to argue that the game isn't a new beast but it is a guilty gear.

It's like SF2->SF3. Ya both are street fighters but you're not going to go from one to the other without growing pains.

my only complaint with the game so far is that Burst puts you in danger mode.. I can't fucking stand it because I apparently do a burst every god damn match when I don't mean to.

I really gotta stop using the shoulder buttons as if they block, pressing both shoulders is pretty much an auto activate but I keep doing it! UGH!

other than that A+

I am as softcore as fighting game fans come, and was totally daunted by what I'd heard about BlazBlue. But I am totally loving it. I still haven't taken the time to learn the "systems" or anything... Just popped it in, chose a character, pulled up the move list, and had a blast. I can do 90% moves reliably with the standard 360 pad, the story mode/arcade mode are not particularly difficult... It's totally playable and fun on a softcore level. Reminds me of the Darkstalker/Night Warrior series a bit in that way.

I haven't seen a bad thing said on GAF yet.

GG2O. Seriously. So impressed with the quality of that product, on both ArcSys's end and Aksys's end, that I resolved to purchase BlazBlue before I knew anything of its systems or watched any videos. And, I like my Fighters.

I'm starting to get the hang of Jin. Having some small issues with his air combos and launchers. Hell. It's day 2. Taokaka I'm having a hard time getting combos down after the 6D6 or 4BC -> cf Cx2 -> 6D9 move. Other than that, those are my two focused characters. Good times! This patch can't come any sooner. I'm ready for some online play for PS3!

BLAZ BLUE GET~!!

Finally freaking arrived! Came home from having to tow my car, and found a pretty brown package on my doorstep.

Installed and played some of the training mode, no idea what I'm doing but this game is so freaking amazing. The videos really don't do any justice to how magnificent this game looks in person. Combo's are surprisingly newb friendly, I was expecting to have to memorize long strings of attacks to do anything. Turns out you can actually mash out a low hit combo and learn from there. Game is WAY more beginner friendly than GG was. Actually... I know they are made by the same developer but, this game is really nothing like GG was. Just... really a different feel entirely.

The art book is really nice too, so happy. It actually has some story information and whatnot, I found it pretty helpful. Watched the "TEACH ME BOOBIE LADIE" opening omg I almost died:lol

Gonna stick my nose in the beautifully massive full color manual in a bit, try some story mode and maybe then go online. God this game is really impressive. Really deserves the 9+ ratings it's getting.

The whole package just screams "slick" at the top of it's lungs.

Downloaded a bang vs ragna match. OMG that was hilarious, the bang player initiated his theme song a hair of a second before being consumed by an astral heat. Got his ass beat to his own theme song:lol

Oh and Arakune is... a thing. Plays really weird, I managed to make him go invisible.. but I have no idea how? any tips?

EDIT

Is this worth the full price if i already own street fighter IV? I know they are completely different but should i add this to my library. I was a big fan of Guilty Gear X2

In all honesty absolutely. If you are going to get it, get it now while you can snag the LE.
I too already own street fighter, I love that game but this is really just a gem. I've never been hyped for a fighting game other than GG but this, and it's exceeded all my expectations, which were. Extremely high. And I've barely even scratched the surface yet.

-No FRCs is what's better stay. There is a reason why so many people like it. Or make FRCs easy, your choice.
-Burst now is used wildly different, also doesn't give you meter
-Dust into Drives? They are so different it doesn't even make sense o_O

And any good SF2 player will say that playing SFIII is a very different beast. The moves are similar, the pacing is similar but you play that game very differently.

If you still feel it's similar that's okay, but take a lot of people's word that for them, it is not.

And now, for something completely different (via Kotaku):

Why the FRC hate?
-How is burst used differently? Other than not giving you meter and It's more risky, it's pretty much the same.
-Didn't say they were similiar, but saying they replaced one mechanic with another. Hence the "List of what's different"

And any good SF2 player will say that playing SFIII is a very different beast. The moves are similar, the pacing is similar but you play that game very differently..

Which is exactly what I said, doesn't change my opinion that this IS guilty gear. It's the type of changes I would of expect from a new Guilty Gear (Not a new XX iteration), but due to bullshit license ownership it's a whole new series.

Crap, anyone have a hint to what I'm missing? Stuck at 99% on Jin's story.

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like I didn't lose somewhere I thought I did.

Let's now list what's the same between the two games.

-Same movement options and rules (dashes, air dashes, instant air dashes, superjump/jump/dash rules, dash cancelling/jump cancelling)
-Faultless defense/Barrier used to soak up chip damage and block in air.
-Air recoveries
-Bursts
-Gattling combos/Revolver Action (both gun names)
-RomanCancel(RC)/RapidCancel(RC)
-Combos from throws
-Dead Angle Attacks/Counter Assault
-Same musical and art style
-Instant Blocks
-Overdrives/DistortionDrive and both use... 50% of meter
-Jump Installs (seems it does, I haven't personally verified).

Seriously, some of those are just make it plainly blatent that they meant this to be the new guilty gear. Some system names share the same acronyms (which is cute), or even the same name. Hell BlazBlue even seems to have jump installs (still have to verify) which was originally a glitch from guilty gear. Thing is these systems are not just similiar to each other (... ie chain combos are in other fighting games as well) but they're the EXACT same.

both games also have fans that use the numpad notation, aka the worst notation ever :(

I find this method to be far superior. It's much easier to understand, for veterans and newcomers.

What does that artbook contain, by the way? I hope it's not like that link above.

Haven't got it yet, but I plan to pick it up over the weekend. I'm getting it mostly because it's such a good looking game. I was a bit of a GGXX fan, but it was a little too tough for me to get into with any depth. From what I hear BB is a bit slower and easier to get into. I'm hoping that's true.

I wouldn't say slower but it is a bit easier to sink your teeth in.

Combo system in this game is alot easier and more exciting then SF4, but input wise SFIV is way more forgiving i mean they really fucked up with the shortcuts in that game. Doing 360's/720's in Blazblue feels much more like SF3 imo.

I think you will enjoy it. It's quite different than SF4, but it's brimming with personality and the gameplay seems a bit more offensive in general. The motions are all those you're used to in SF as well with timing that's a bit more strict. It's good. I wish I was playing right now.

All of these characters seem to play so drastically different. I may not be able to bounce around on random like I usually do. I was almost exclusively Potemkin and May in GGXX.
