The Last of Us Online "was great", former PlayStation exec says, but Naughty Dog couldn't make it alongside new IP

Yoshida, who recently left PlayStation, was able to play the game before it was cancelled, which he discussed in an interview with Sacred Symbols+ (thanks Push Square) saying he "played the game and it was great".

"The idea for The Last of Us Online came from Naughty Dog and they really wanted to make it," said Yoshida. "But Bungie explained [to them] what it takes to make live service games, and Naughty Dog realised, 'Oops, we can't do that! If we do it, we can't make Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.' So that was a lack of foresight."

Yoshida spoke further on live service games at Sony, stating that no first-party studio had been forced into the genre.

"From my experience, when studios see the company has a big initiative, [they realise] riding on that gives them a better chance of getting a project approved and supported," he explained. "It's not like [current PS Studios boss Hermen Hulst] is telling teams they need to make live service games, it's likely mutual."

He also addressed current issues in the games industry such as slowed development and layoffs. "I think it's an overreaction to the Covid situation," he said. "Companies invested too much, including ourselves. Then we had to face reality and make adjustments. If you take out the Covid years you'd have smoother growth over the years."

Don't believe this at all. They got scared when destiny started performing crappy. Neil didn't want to lower himself to multiplayer games that needed attention.

Naughty dog definitely could have supported this. Helldivers 2 coming out immediately after this got canceled was further proof.

People were still playing tlou online on ps4 last year. I tried several times and found matches almost as fast as marvel rivals nowadays. The fan base is there but they completely fucked up. Neil totally buckled when bungie brought up concerns but in hindsight bungie was a complete mess in their managerial side

Helldivers 2 is having its own problems despite not being the highest budget and being the singular focus of Arrowhead. You suggest that ND could manage both this project and other SP ones when it has literally not worked out for any other company but Rockstar - who are taking 5-8 year intervals on their games with literally 2 thousand employees. All because of an online mode for what is a baseline PS3 game.

Love the idea that ND developed this game to such a state that it was actually playable and then Bungie randomly came along and said "yo man maintaining this game is a shitload of work" and ND was like

And just pulled the plug on the whole thing.

Sounds so retarded that it's probably true.

If it was great Naughty Dog should let someone else finish it / maintain it. Maybe spin off a new team for it. I want this game.

I imagine whatever is there will ship in some shape or form with TLOU3 and just be a standard multiplayer.

There is no way a basically complete and great product from all reports just sits there and is being left untouched. There is definitely some tiny team chipping away at it still.

I have no doubt it would have been great. Seems like a natural extension of the IP as well. But if it's a choice between that and focusing on a new single player IP, I would prefer the latter. So overall, this seems like the right call for ND.

This is such a tough month for current PS haters with all the facts being thrown around.

I still don't see how great it would've been with all the other competition that currently exists in the realm they were trying to populate. I mean, what would've made it so different aside from just being the IP? Would've been cool to have actually seen some footage to know.

They should've just stuck to Factions 2.

I'm pretty sure we'll probably see a lot of it in a TLOU3 game as a multiplayer mode. You don't see a lot of teams taking over other teams games at Sony. It sounds super feasible to just say it, but the practicalities probably escape us.

This. They should have given it to Bend Studios, makes the most sense to me.
Thing is, Naughty Dog still has the game, the source code etc etc, they were far along so its possible it could just get picked up again.

So another case of fabricated drama because "whaawhaa Gaas sucks".
gaas sucks though and it's better for me, if devs focus on real, single player narrative games, rpg games and so on so on.
Gaas contradicts good story and gameplay because you must have grind, you must have content... coming.... always....

So I don't care about anyone else. I am happy personally every time this gaas crap takes the hit

You're not the centre of the universe though.

I loved TLoU2's gameplay and level design so the idea of that minus the story I didn't give a fuck about sounded killer. Still bummed this didn't happen. I play a very small amount of online MP games but when they work, they can be peak gaming imo and I think they have/had the gameplay chops to make it happen. I was excited for that shit.

because that wont make any money

And yet, it was initially said that the multiplayer mode would be available at launch. Later, it was stated that it would be added for free via a patch, so the mode had already been internally calculated and approved by management. Later still, it was said that they wanted to release the title as a full-fledged game, as it would become 'too big.'

June 2018:
The Last of Us Part 2 will include a multiplayer component, the game’s co-director, Anthony Newman, told Polygon at E3 2018.
“There is going to be multiplayer with the game,” Newman said. “We’re really excited to share details about it, but that’s going to be at a later date.”
September 2019:
“Multiplayer will not be included with The Last of Us Part 2,” said Anthony Newman, the game’s co-director. “I know we had kind of announced that [it would have multiplayer], but as the game has developed, it’s become so ambitious, so grand in scope, and so intricate in its complexity, that it really required the full focus of the studio to deliver this single-player experience.”
June 2022:
Druckmann said Naughty Dog wasn’t ready to reveal much about the game so far, but he did have a piece of concept art to share, showing two characters overlooking an apocalyptic city. Druckmann did say that the stand-alone multiplayer game will be as big as the developer’s single-player games, “and in some ways bigger.”

The decision to turn it into a service game could either stem from Sony's misguided approach with their GaaS strategy or from Naughty Dog itself, since TLOU II, although undoubtedly an incredibly impressive experience, had to deal with well-known controversies.

Factions 1 was very popular in TLOU I. Instead of offering a simple MP mode first, which wouldn't have cost much time and money because it was undoubtedly already far into development, we players now have nothing.

Complete bullshit, even though I like the TLOU series, this is just complete bullshit.

Back in the day, multiplayer was simply included with the game - whether it made perfect sense or not didn’t really matter. Uncharted 2/3 had basic Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and even a co-op mode where you could just shoot enemies with a friend. It was fun - not for weeks on end, but it definitely added value to the game.

So why not allow players to fight enemy waves in existing game areas with a friend? Or have an 8-player Deathmatch or some other simple mode?

Anything would be better than what we have (or rather, don’t have) now...

I’d rather have a factions game than Bald-lactic. Don’t get me wrong, I was also hoping for a new IP, but what they showed is kind of lackluster. Instead of a special edition that has an art book and soundtrack, it’s gonna have shaving cream and a razor. I still play Factions 1 to this day. It’s not like they need huge support on that model. Hell people are still glitching off the map, and they don’t fix it. But I still come back. They just needed to add more maps and a perk for faster tea bagging in the sequel.

This did not need to happen at all. Can't have a simple tacked on online mode though! Gotta create battle pass systems to siphon money from people.

It's pretty obvious that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is going to be much bigger than Last of Us, so it makes total sense to scrap an online version that would have only been played by fans of the games and show for a single player sword game.

Dont buy it at all, TLOU is massively popular and beloved, its an established franchise, if it was truly good it would end up being a massive success.

Yet they are rather taking a huge risk on a brand new thing instead of a guaranteed hit with TLOU. Thatds like Apple stopping to make Iphones in order to make just watches.

Sacrificing a project with no risk and expected massive return on investment for a project with a huge risk and lower return on investment just doesnt make any business sense.

Factions is what they should have pushed onto firesprite or some other studio.
Factions combat is unique enough to where I think it would have a good following and be a GaaS that lasts.

The TLoU2 used 14 outsourcing studios.

Why couldn't they just outsource the whole thing to the studios that had already worked on the game?
The way the game was being envisioned was a story driven online world. Which means a ton of constant creative direction. GaaS endeavors like this require heavy resource dedication and multi-year commitment. It can't just be outsourced. In retrospect, they should have just stuck to a Factions multiplayer mode. But they got too ambitious and couldn't find a way to pare it back without starting from scratch. It is tragic, but it is what it is. Sometimes you aim for the moon and just blow up.

Thanks for laying it all out for us. I knew Yoshida was a liar. This is why I come to GAF for real insight into what happened.

I just hope Druckmann agreed to make a GAAS game in exchange for a massive budget for Intergalactic

And at least it sounds like Naughty Dog is extremely high on the prospects of Intergalactic

Just release it for 40 bucks and call it a day. Don't make it a live service game, just release it to make some money back. People are desperate for last of us online. Bad call to cancel it completely.
