This "I'm a progressive but if Hillary is the nominee, I'm not voting" shit is stale

Ugh, no. I voted for Bernie; we are saying IF he doesn't win don't take your toys and go home.

I'm not doing that. I'm simply moving my support to the general election candidate that best represents my views. It could be Hillary, we'll see what she says after the primaries are over. But I wouldn't bet she turns into Eugene V. Debs over the course of half a year.

Lol Hillary was always the forerunner from day 1. Bernie was always going to be a long shot. But go ahead and handover the ballot to either a hypocritical teabagger or Hitler. If you want to ruin this country go ahead.

This is the boilerplate response, and my only question to you is: what world do you live in where America hasn't already been ruined? Or at least been in a deplorable-but-fixable state for the past forty years?

You guys only have 2 legitimate parties, vote for the one that is closer to your values, this isn't like NDP (and to a lesser extent, Green) voters in Canada who have to figure out if they can safely vote NDP or need to strategically vote Liberal so Trudeau became PM rather than Harper!

I won't argue that not voting makes you less of a progressive. What it does make you is a selfish, apathetic, fucking asshole progressive, and at that point you may as well not be a progressive at all.

The notion that you might be so bitter with the democratic nomination, that you might contribute to America reversing course in years or even decades, just out of some personal, fucking pride, is disgusting.

I guess everyone who says this bullshit must be made; someone who won't really be affected whether the president is someone like Trump or someone like Hillary? Right? That's the only explanation.

Otherwise, stop being a prick. You can either commit to making change, over time, with a person who is at least somewhat reasonable, or you could cross your arms and pout like a fucking child.

How the fuck this kinda bullshit thread does not get immediately locked is beyond me.

Creating this thread to vent and slander every non-Hillary supporter is a fucking joke. And to call those individuals children is the most ironic part. I get it- you guys have to make the same damn thread every day because it's super easy to spin your strawman argument and paint Bernie supporters with one broad stroke while simultaneously you get to jerk off about your leading nominee. But it's getting damn tiring and Gaf is a more rational audience than your bullshit misrepresentation will ever claim them to be. I supported Bernie, it's obvious he's not going to get the nomination- Hillary does not represent my interests, so she will not get my vote. But Trump certainly will not either.

But let me say this, in the same vein of how you take your small sample from shit places like facebook or twitter, formulate your rage, and bring that shitty argument here, I will point out that from my sampling, people have soured on Hillary because of her shitty supporters such as yourself who seem to both gloat and chastise Bernie followers while covering it all in a veil of 'concern'.

I have to say, I hear more tantrums about this 'Bernie to Trump' narrative (this thread) than I actually ever have about actual Bernie supporters throwing a fit and claiming they're moving to the Trump camp.

This assumes the non-vote had a preference one way or the other.

... Which is what would have to be true for PantherLotus' statement to be true. But non-votes are simply that. They don't count one way or the other.

If you do have a preference and don't vote, it's effectively supporting the alternative solely because you are not taking the opportunity to support your preference. It might not be a +1 for the alternative, but it is a -1 for your preference.

No. It's a zero. If it's a vote for anything, it's a vote against both candidates simultaneously or against the process. A choice not to vote is just as valid as voting.

Telling people if they don't want to vote for Hillary and therefore aren't voting that they're actually voting for Trump is bullshit, gross, and insulting.

Clinton is not entitled to your vote. If you decide that you will only vote for Sanders and not Clinton, that's your right and no one can or should be allowed to change that.

That said, don't you dare look a racial minority in the eye and tell us you give a shit about us, because you've just shown that's a load of bullshit.

Amen. You put this better than I did.

Were as many people throwing tantrums online back then? I feel like I need more reference for what I'm seeing around here.
More. Hillaryis44 was no joke. (Well it was a huge joke but still). Some Clinton fans stayed bitter till the very end and refused to vote for Obama.

That said, most did eventually come around and vote for Obama, just like most Sanders supporters will.

Edit: to clear a few things up, Hillaryis44 was a rabidly anti Obama website with a lot of followers, that I beleive decided to vote for McCain just to spite Obama. It's a fun read : )

Hillary supporters came up with the birther movement and had a giant webpage about not voting Obama. Yet he won. And Hillary will win this one (or if she does not it will not be due to this very small group). We are shitting up every political thread with this issue when it will have zero impact. Lastly, we are using a poll taken when salt is highest? It means nothing.

I'm starting to feel like Hillary needs to put up an ad or bumper sticker that says "If you won't vote for Hillary, at least vote against Trump."

But more importantly, I think one of the main problems here is that a lot of people have underestimated what the President by themselves has the power to do, how much change they have the power to bring. The same thinking is what made so many people disappointed in Obama. Maybe a better word is "misunderstanding," because in other ways they're underestimating what presidents like Bush or Trump are capable of by themselves. Of course that feeds into the whole off-year mid-term election problem Democrats have.

The OP's "what do you care about?" line is also an excellent point. There are a lot of people here who mainly care about issues like privacy, the internet, and don't like neoliberal economics, and no president has really addressed those things. Bernie has riled up people who primarily care about those things. On the other side you have minorities who are just concerned with keeping Trump (or the GOP in general) out of the White House. I think that's the main source of this argument here.

1. The lot of you are crying about how you can't vote for a politician who doesn't truly represent you. Boo fucking hoo, minorities, LGBT, and women have had to deal with that for decades. There is a political party that is actively trying to fuck their lives up in so many ways. They never get a politician who that truly represents them but you don't see them saying "Fuck the system lololol, I'll vote republican for the lulz!" They still vote for the closest politican they can find.

You don't worry about that because you're a white male, and because of such the policies the right will enact will affect you much less than the non white groups of America. It's white privilege to be able to vote for a repressive party because you didn't get your way. The rest of us don't have such a luxury. We have to vote for whoever is trying to fuck us over the least. Many upon many Americans stand to loss much with Trump/Cruz in office. They stand to lose insurance via ACA, which probably doesn't affect you because you have a decent paying job that provides adequate insurance. LGBT stand to lose the right to get married, again this doesn't bother/concern you because you're a straight white male, you've been able to get married since this country's inception.

2. With number one stated, it's clear that none of you actually ever gave a fuck about Bernie's platform and what he stands for because if you did then you'd have long realized how selfish and arrogant to vote against what he stands for. Hillary is corporate yes but even Bernie himself has acknowledged on more than one occasion that they both have the same goals in mind in regards to making America a place more tolerable for those who didn't hit the genetic lottery to be born middle class, white, and male. Bernie Sanders himself will vote this election and I can promise you he'll vote for Hillary.

Bernie's policies and platform were never the reason you people were voting for him. You were voting for him because most of you are to put it bluntly...fucking hipsters and Bernie Sanders/Feel the Bernie was the newest fad that you jumped on to show all your twitter/Facebook friends that you're "socially woke" and to pretend that you give a damn about the country or the people. It was an shallow act, and now that Bernie has lost you've dropped the fad and are on to the next one. You people heard the buzzword "anti-establishment" and jumped on the hype train, went to your social networks and blogs and posted links and articles about the sad state of America telling your friends to "wake up" like you were this social justice warrior but the entire thing was a damn act. You never gave a damn about the state of America or how it's people are being treated, and I mean ha why should you? It would barely affect you in the end. You're not poor, you're not LGBT, you're not a minority. At most you'll lose a dollar or two because of tax but hey life is still good.

Then when Trump/Cruz is elected and the put some ridiculously conservative judges on the SCOTUS and rollback all the progress America made, you'll sit in your ivory tower of white privilege and go "If only you people voted for Bernie! we could have avoided this!" Not once realizing that you directly contributed to the shit state of affairs when you decided to pout that your politician didn't get elected.

It's like you people don't understand a thing about politics, politics is all about compromising, even voters have to compromise. I personally would like the next 5 Presidents to be socially progressive minorities but I can't get that, but I am presented a politician who while I don't agree with all of her stances on things, she's the closest thing I've got to my ideal politician, and she's also the one who will fuck over us none white males the least and at the very least protect some of the laws that keep us safe and rollback others that hurt us.

But hey, take your ball and pout. That's the privilege granted to you. It must be nice.

Great summary.

It's crazy how people don't realize the number of people they're fucking over by "not voting Hillary."

A shitload of people will have their lives ruined as a result of your choice to not vote for Hillary.

Good lord some of you are being incredibly hostile and rude

Do you go on the same profanity-laced condescending tirades in real life when you encounter another human being who isn't voting for Hillary?

I think there is a HUGE difference between "not voting for" and "not voting". Anyone who says "I don't like <candidate>, so I'm not voting" needs to be slapped in the face!

While the Presidential vote is the biggest on the ticket, unless you live in a swing state your vote for the President isn't the most important vote on the ballot. Local county and state elections have more day to day impact.

Go vote. If you don't want to pick a winner in a race then skip over it, but GO FREAKING VOTE!

This, democrats already have a big enough problem with people thinking only voting for the POTUS matters, don't make it worse just because you weren't able to get Bernie in the office.

Let's not forget that Clinton said this...

https://youtu.be/6I1-r1YgK9I

I will never understand how she got so much of the queer and female vote.

The Clintons are masters at controlling the media narrative and they have a network of "allies" in liberal news organizations, especially at NBC. They mastered that during Bill's first presidential campaign when they had to handle "Slick Willy's" baggage from Arkansas.

wow, the first few posts from the usual suspects here were right on time

flat taxes and all!

Congrats on your vote for Trump.

exactly this

Nope, you can not vote and still successfully say shit

you can, but it's without worth - why not at least look into 3rd party options? completely abstaining - especially when there's usually other stuff on the ballot as well - is not an action coming from someone who's view is really worth hearing, is the thing

Amazing how easily voters on the left have swallowed right wing bullshit about Hillary Clinton over the years.

to be fair, they've had since the 90's to build that narrative

God's son across the belly, i prove you lost already

damn fam, you stay puttin on clinics the 85% ain't ready for god

That's not even what I described though because in this case the person either has no preference (they don't support Hillary or Trump), or they have problem with how they choose a candidate (voting for someone to be their friend and not someone to run a country).

If you support Hillary or Trump or Mickey Mouse and don't vote for that person, it is a -1 for that person.

There's actually polls that show this to be true. 9% of Bernie's group go Trump and one in four pubs go Hillary.

Which is really showing, as Hilary is second only to Obama in how much the GOP vilifies her.

This topic is everything wrong with Clinton supporters. Hillary has to earn our votes. Period. What the fuck is so hard to understand about that? She's not entitled to the liberal vote by default.

This attitude will drive off Bernie supporters, without whom Hillary will lose to Trump. It'd be more productive to make the positive case for her than to go this route.

The Clintons don't control the media, the owners of corporate media control the Clintons which is why they also favor them.

I personally would like the next 5 Presidents to be socially progressive minorities but I can't get that, but I am presented a politician who while I don't agree with all of her stances on things, she's the closest thing I've got to my ideal politician, and she's also the one who will fuck over us non white males the least and at the very least protect some of the laws that keep us safe and rollback others that hurt us. And that's the crux, you weren't "added" as a clause to be considered equal or worth protecting. We were and we'd like to see the clauses stay as they are and not eroded or removed completely because a segment of America deems us to be lessers.

But hey, take your ball and pout. That's the privilege granted to you. It must be nice.
I said damn.

Beautiful.

I feel Angelus perfectly sums up why we make out "bullshit threads"

This topic is everything wrong with Clinton supporters. Hillary has to earn our votes. Period. What the fuck is so hard to understand about that? She's not entitled to the liberal vote by default.

This attitude will drive off Bernie supporters, without whom Hillary will lose to Trump. It'd be more productive to make the positive case for her than to go this route.
Hillary and Bernie already share almost identical platforms. Seriously, what does "earn" your vote really mean?

Some people see this as a weird game or ideological battlefield but a lot of people's well being is on the line. It's just tiring

It's only tiring because so much attention has been wasted on the small amount that won't cross over from bernie to hillary. Plus it is still in the salt stage so emotions are high. Step back, focus on how good this cycle actually will be for us progressives and have some hope.

We are on the cusp of winning the SCOTUS, the senate and maybe the house. We are almost assured a win in november now that the hardest republicans to beat cannot get a legitimate nomination. And lastly, their party is on the verge of collapse.

Positive case.

She isn't Trump. Done.

I like Bernie. Im not a fan of Hilary really, but here's the deal:

If it comes down to Clinton vs. Trump/Cruz for many minorities it is like you are standing by the lever for a train you can pull the lever and save them or refuse to do it on principal that it's not what you wanted.

It's not just about you or me and our wants.

It's not about Clinton deserving our votes. It's about giving everyone the best opportunity that we can squeeze out of this election. And everyone deserves that.

Wake me up when we abandon the electoral college and do just popular vote so every vote matters and not just certain states.

They'd need to get rid of the EC, have more than two viable parties, go to proportional representation

PR may be coming to Canada but I don't see it happening in the US anytime soon

To the privileged, equality feels like oppression.

Oh please, I am a "minority" in more ways then one, and even I would never vote Clinton. Never compromise, even in the face of Armageddon.

Also, one of these minorities- Muslims, have not reason to vote Clinton. She voted for an attack on what would be many of their homelands. Why would you vote for someone who voted for the destruction of your homeland and death of your people? And no "false information" BS, Sanders voted against it, he had the foresight to see what a mess it would be.

The electoral college itself is not bad, since it gives additional weight to rural voters that would otherwise be completely drowned out by urban ones. It would essentially make most of the states not on the coasts irrelevant for the presidential election.

It should be proportional though rather than winner take all.

No?

But I have to a few of my friends pointed out how we should probably all vote for Clinton (if Sanders doesn't get the nom) simply because she's not Trump, and regardless what we think of her we'll probably be better off, collectively, under a liberal Supreme Court.
Yes, I don't disagree with that point at all. A dead jellyfish would make a better president than Trump.

The level of aggression and cruelty being thrown around in here by some people though is astounding. Not physically going to the poll to vote for a candidate you actively dislike in November in no way means you are an automatic racist, misogynist, or homophobe. That's just ludicrous.

It's the same logic as saying "if you don't shop at your mom and pop grocery store, you're willfully pushing to bankrupt your local businesses", or "if you buy an Apple product, you morally agree with terrible working conditions that push people to suicide." It's nothing but asinine haught and a misguided avenue for expressing anger.

The more the pubs get beaten in the popular vote this election, the more they know that their stances on the issues and demgoguery are already in the wastebin of history. And it also shows that certain states are shifting. States that are blue or red have flipped due to demographics over time.
