This is something that someone at Bioware or EA has to bring up in their post mortem about this project. There was no reason to not market this game as an epic fantasy. That's what it is and that is what Bioware has been good at historically.
No matter how this game turns out - good or bad - there's no excuse for that original trailer. Setting themselves up to be dunked on for no reason.

Look, this series has been dead for 10 years. For its sales to go gangbusters, it had to appeal to the older gamers who played Origins, II, and Inquisition. They didn't do that, therefore, the market will have to be a younger crowd.
So, I suppose its up to younger folks whether they want to buy this style of game or not. The older RPG enthusiast don't seem to be biting on this for now. And especially after we were all treated to Baldur's Gate 3.

Look, this could turn out to be a genuinely trash game, but some of you are really showing your asses in this thread.
None of you have played it.
You can’t object to the rampant stupidity and knee jerk reactions over at ResetEra, and then engage in exactly the same behaviour here!
I’ll be right alongside you slagging this game off, and games journalism as well, if it actually turns out to be garbage - but right now, I’ll wait to see what the reaction is when it’s actually released, and give it a go myself maybe, if the consensus is positive.

Best part of the IGN review:
They must have preorder data showing the coming bomba. Which means all the devs and ""journalists"" in the same Discord are all commiserating about it and the journos just decided to give them some going away flowers. Rather than, you know, informing the reader about a product for sale. But we're far beyond any of the big outlets having any semblance of financial independence.

I can't believe there are STILL people who defend modern reviews! You'd almost have to be involved with them personally--ie friends or family who's a reviewer, or one yourself. There's just no legit defense for them these days... and to clarify I mean the ones who use the meta scale.

The combat appears to be absolutely nothing like the OG game.

It’s 17 years or so since Jeff Gerstmann got fired from GameSpot for his scathing review of Kane and Lynch, after pressure from the publisher who had bought advert placements on the GameSpot website.
That shook the industry to its core, and really revealed a corruption among the mainstream outlets with regards to publisher influence on editorial practices. Nowadays, people are just desensitised to it, or just don’t care.

I'm the type of person who makes an effort to use words correctly. I haven't been able to, in good conscience, call the people writing for these sites "journalists" for a long time. They're bloggers and sometimes activists too, nothing more. As well, in some cases, they're simply being paid to parrot opinions that are "correct" or those that will ensure their site doesn't get blacklisted by publishers. For these reasons, I have no interest in giving weight to any of these so-called reviews.
On another note, I really do miss the days when reviews were good sources of information. I found some of my favourite titles that way, but that was years and years ago.

Its a shady industry. Making it more interesting is how direct or indirect game companies and reviewers are. Is it advertising? Is it a pay out? Is it early copies and access? Is it free stuff?
My buddy ran a game site way back and he got a box full of GTA4 swag from Rockstar. Free game and collectible knick knacks. But that was the end of it. There was no NDA or contract or anything. All he did was email them if they got any promotional stuff and he was surprised when he got a free game out of it.
Did that sway his review? I dont know. I didn't keep up with his site. But his perk was as low level as you can get. He didnt get money or early beta copies or whatever.
