Twitch you have a problem and should be ashamed of it

So if I'm understanding it right, they have an automated text to speech the acknowledges donations and when people send in donations it reads whatever is sent in. So people troll them with stupid stuff and the girls pretend to be upset to get more money from the trolls. Is that about right? If that is true, twitch is straight up ridiculous for allowing this crap.

Yes, that's right. I'm surprised Twitch hasn't done something about it yet.

I wasn't familiar with this (not familiar with Twitch really), I just clicked on the most popular game, then picked the thumbnail with cleavage and I see what you are talking about. It seems like an attractive girl crying about getting kicked out of her house and instead of finding somewhere to go or packing she is playing videogames while being read mean comments by a text to speech program with a soothing voice.

The internet is really weird. I don't understand Twitch and it's culture of donations and subscriptions. I hadn't paid much attention to it until the Street Fighter 5 Beta, and found it really weird that people were sort of big noting by giving the streamers money. Perhaps if I lived in a tipping country like america it would make more sense to me. Is this how live streaming porn sites work? Has game streaming evolved as an offshoot of that?

EDIT: typed this response when this thread was on page one, but didn't click submit, so I've missed the whole conversation
As an American, I don't understand twitch donations and subs either. If that means anything lol

I'm extremely picky in what channels I choose to pay a sub to, and even then I only do it for a month or two.

I've subbed to Lirik's stream about 2 years back when his stream first got going. He was proving pretty quickly that he could be entertaining for almost an entire day, I thought it deserved my money. Cancelled after 2 or 3 months. I still watch the channel, but at the time the idea was new to me and didn't feel comfortable having rolling monthly payments for Twitch.

The only other channel I've subbed to was TwoAngryGamers. Those guys bust their asses as streamers to pump out scheduled streams, constantly interact with their community, and aren't full of shit. Stopped my sub after two months because I went broke.

There are some streamers that legit deserve the money for the work they put in.

So like Anita Sarkeesian?

She got harassed for opinion, responded to it by highlighting all the negativity, and got a lot of money from people who supported her.

Maybe the streamer planned it and exploited the people who felt bad for her. Maybe she didn't.

I say live your life, OP. It's not gonna go away.

There's no maybe here, that's what she and multiple other people are doing. The part of this shtick is that you give exactly what all the harassers want, an emotional reaction while the people who have no idea that they're acting donate to counter all the harassment.

They're playing both sides.

I thought they banned cleavage a long time ago. What happened to that?

The trolling has become sophisticated and more and more creative...for what it is, at least. Lots of fake-outs, Youtube videos with well done editing...it's good for ten minutes and then gets to be too much.

But overall, the amount of money that these trolled streamers are getting is pretty nuts. It takes away from those doing professional streaming or trying to make a living out of it, but at the same time, there's always going to be that give and take from both sides. Everyone loves a well made thing, but there's always a good time in something awful.

Small sample size, but I couldn't even find any female streamers in the top 35 streamers.

The only female I found in the top 40 was Dizzy Kitten. She was not exhibiting any of the OP's complaints and she is actually a very competent CS player in her own right.

I get it. Best you can do is try to raise awareness but some people will always fall for it.

So why is the focus on the receivers of the abuse, and not the people abusing? Shouldn't twitch get rid of them? If these women are in fact acting, then when the abusers are gone, they will not be able to continue. But demanding people put up with abuse or leave is saying that abuse is a valid feature that you support. Why should the abusers be the ones to stay?

And suggesting that people who continue in the face of abuse must want it is really messed up.

You're not gonna find them in the most watched streams, often they have a small (but loyal) fanbase and the donations that they receive are huuuuuge

I take it you didn't click the stream then.

Look, getting harassed on the internet is awful and I'm not condoning that behavior but you're being naive if you think the streamers that do this care about the harassment.

The harasser has to pay actual money to send an insult directly to them. They could turn off the stream if it really bothered them but they don't because this is their job.

And now this girl.

It's all an act, man. You show as much cleavage as possible, pretend to be dumb and you cry when someone insults you.

Hell, this guy even got in on the act.

Why should she have to turn off the stream? That's what I'm getting at. You are saying the natural state is the abuse and if you don't like it, work around it.

As I said, getting rid of the abusers will get rid of these people if the abuse is the only reason they're on. Problem solved. But you want to keep the abusers and focus on these people as if they are the real problem.

Alternately, if you don't like these people don't go to twitch.

She wouldn't turn off her stream because she's making a fuck ton of money. I never said she needed to turn it off.

You're under the impression that this might not be an act and that they're bothered by all the hate all I was doing was showing that this was not the case.

I'm not a big twitch user, so can someone explain all of this to me like I'm five? Not trying to be funny, I'm honestly have no clue what the OP is even complaining about.

Imagine you own a lemonade stand

But no one really wants to buy your lemonade.

You change your sign to be "pay 1€ to insult me"

You act up to the insults no matter how bonkers and random they are, such as "your a lama"

Watch cash roll in.

No, you said if she didn't like it, she would turn it off. You are making the abusers the gatekeepers of her stream. Why should she be controlled by them?

I'm not saying it's never an act. I'm saying it's irrelevant. The abuse doesn't happen only to these people. Why focus on these people and not the ones slinging abuse?

Personally, oh fucking well. They can get money from trolls, horny dudes or just people in on the joke. It doesn't take away from what I watch. No do I really care about "gamer integrity". Let 'em do whatever they want.

Heck, when I was watching SGDQ2015 some old man was using the popularity of those games to sing on Twitch for donations. His name was Raven [something]. I'll have to find it. Pretty scummy to use a Cancer Research stream to profit from but it happens. Reported to Twitch but nothing happened. These people using Twitch to get poverty money is just apart of Twitch.

I've been watching twitch before twitch even existed (back in the days of the justin.tv gaming section). I've never seen this sort of stuff, it's either a very small sample size or I'm oblivious to the areas it happens in. I only watch variety streamers (they play a lot of different games), speedrunners and the fighting games community. None of the female streamers I follow do anything like this, they're just like every other male streamer on the site. Where are people finding these streams? Is it in the eSports side of things like LoL? (which I'm 100% oblivious to)

I think it's a small sample size that is exaggerated. I also have no issue with a woman showing cleavage if she wants to make more money. I'm not interested in that, I don't watch twitch for that - I can just go watch porn or a cam site if I wanted, I'm interested in entertaining people with commentary on the games they stream (basically like a live Let's Play). I get that other people like the cleavage (as an example) on twitch and that's fine if you want that and I have zero issue if a woman uses that to her advantage. It's a business where they're trying to make money.

Wait, you have to pay for your message to pop up on stream?
$1 per troll message? Dang, that is a lot of money and if you add the money from people that feel sorry for the streamer, oh boy.
At the end of the day, these streamers win by baiting people in giving them money.
They would log onto their bank account, smile, and be ready to take the abuses for free money the next gaming session.
Honestly, do these trolls actually believe words coming from online can hurt a professional streamer's feeling and mental well-being?
And beside, money cures a lot of thing.

Crazy thing it, I bet strippers and prostitution don't get pay that much like these streamers.
And these sex professional workers probably suffer from real physical and mental abuse, and of course, worse working environment.

But seriously, gaming the donation system in their favor, can't hate them for that.
Winning is winning.

To me it's just super annoying that male gamers get called out for being sexist when the girl gamers have streams like this...

I think as long as the streamers stay within their legal means then they should be able to stay though.

worth watching for some people who can't separate a concern that gaming takes a backseat too much in their opnion from misconceptions about or prejudice against female streamers:

Just watch the whole thing. Really good video. I still stand by the point of "I don't care". Kinda like what Kaceytron said with the whole "perfect synagogue" thing. It doesn't take away from my Twitch experience so I couldn't care what other people are doing.

I watched a stream last night from a popular streamer called soda.

He had 23,000+ viewers watching him play H1Z1 at a reasonably high standard.

The donations (minimum $3 to be read out) were constant for over 2 hours. They were the most racist and vile comments you'd ever wish to read/hear.

Whilst he constantly berated them, he didn't turn the text-to-speech off. He only cut a few short if he read ahead.

Someone asked how much he had made in donations that day...$1800+!

Twitch has an obligation to stop this sort of thing. There are no age requirements to view the streams, and a younger child could be watching these sort of streams and think it's normal to make jokes about race or pedophilia.

We're on page 12 of a topic that could be solved by simply not watching something? How? Why? I've been reading the endless loop of replies and I still can't quite understand why people are upset...especially at the people actually being attacked.

This is all very derp right now. Really, very derp.
