vg247-PS4: new kits shipping now, AMD A10 used as base, final version next summer

Ok, can somebody give me a short summary of what the PS4 will be composed of in terms of hardware? Going by the rumors of course.

I tried reading, but there's too much and I get confused with all the technical terms.

There are only rumors about used devkits. No info on final hardware. Devkit specs are included in the first post of this topic.

Background for the design choices is here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=473780 but that is technical for the most part. As jaosobno says above, there have been 3 versions of the Developer kits that use off the shelf hardware to approximate the final design.

It is all still very vague. I'll try.

Either:

APU: (4-8 Jaguar cores+HD7660?) + separate ~HD7850 GPU

APU: 4-8 Jaguar cores + ~HD7850

4GB DDR4 RAM

Don't know what makes vapor chamber cooling but it was very impressive (ie: expensive)

If Sony do go for another 200 watt system at launch they'll need a similar cooling system assuming a similar case size. I don't see it happening ATM.
My 60GB PS3 went GROD last week so I baked the motherboard in the oven (works fine now by the way).

Taking my PS3 apart, I was impressed by it's overall complexity. The case, the number of components, heat sink, the custom shock&thermal pads. Dissembling it took me more than an hour. Must have cost sony a fortune to to produce.

It's a pity I accidentally destroyed the bluray-motherboard connector and with it, it's ability to run anything from the drive, including PS2 games.

So basically you ignore all the logic in gofreak's post and continue to insist that we'll see 2014 designs in these 2013 consoles?

Just because this tech won't be PC ready by Q4 2013, doesn't mean AMD won't have it available for next gen consoles sooner.

Jeff likes to dream big.

Ill be hapy with competent CPU that is connected to 8xxx gpu (all on 28nm)and 4-8GB of stacked DDR4 ram. Sure dedicated GPU would be great, but even OP's rumor claim that console is aimed to be cheap.

If it's really just Jaguar cores there should be at least 8 of them. Otherwise I'll be disappointed, and I'm sure Sony doesn't want to disappoint me

Dreaming big? To use stacked DDR4 ram requires a future design! If it's a high performance desktop design then a 1.5 to 2 year future design as they won't be using stacked (embedded) memory in the near future. If Kabini based with minor changes in timing and code to use DDR4 then a near 2014 design.

From nearly day one I've been stating:
1) It has to be full HSA
2) It will use wide I/O (TSVs) and stacked RAM.
3) 1 and 2 above require a 2014+ design
4) Recently I've speculated a greater than even chance of 22nm FD-SOI being used.

I found the supporting cites that are being used on BY3D and posted them here.

http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1696269/ps4_launch_date_is_october_or_november_2013_pachter.html

PlayStation 4 is due for launch in October or November 2013, predicts Michael Pachter.

"I don't think Sony wants to launch behind Microsoft again, so I'm confident we'll see a PS4 in October or November 2013," explained the Wedbush Securities Analyst, talking to Play magazine.

"It isn't likely that they will launch earlier, as it doesn't make sense to get out too far in front of software, and I'm pretty confident that few developers have been working on PS4 games for more than a year or so. Holiday 2013 will be a comfortable window for Sony, and will give them a chance to get a head start on Microsoft."

Pachter also thinks PlayStation 3 will continue to sell beyond that point.

"The PS3 probably has a solid three years left for sales, so it should make it comfortably to a 10-year life span," he continued. "There are a lot of people who are uncomfortable spending $250 for a console, so I think price cuts to the $199, $149 and $99 will extend the life of a console."

I think the benefit to launching first is overstated when the other guy can come second with a better system that many later will prefer instead. The systems this time just happened to be very similar in real game performance, mostly because Sony fumbled badly. If Microsoft comes second a year later there's a good chance they will have a decent spec advantage.

Yeah I guess there's the slim chance this could be true. However as gofreak already pointed out, you don't stick unrefined tech in a console where cost is a concern.

28nm chips are being made today, but Nintendo chose to go with 45/~40nm process for the Wii-U because it was cheaper. This is why we'll likely see 28nm next gen, but not 22nm or anything else like what Jeff is going on about.

Why does it have to be full HSA? Why will it use wide I/O?*

*hopes for a real reply and not a wall of text with links and bolded lines.

There is no need for PS4 release in 2013.

For the first half they have
God of War Ascension
Sly
DmC
LittleBigPlanet Karting
Nino Kuni
Dead Space 3
MGS Revengeance
Aliens Colonial Marines
Lost Planet 3
Splinter Cell Blacklist
Crysis 3
Beyond
Army of Two
GTA5
Bioshock Infinite
Tomb Raider
Metro Last Light
Anarchy Reigns

For the 2nd half they have
Puppeteer
Dragon Age 3
COD
The Last of Us
Castlevania Lord of Shadow 2
Last Guardian (lol)
FF Versus XIII (lol)
MGS Ground Zeros

Personally I am not going to get a PS4 until the slim/price drop. Got too much of a backlog of games as it is. I did the same with PS3.

So you jumped in late? To you, it's still a room-temperature body... to me, it's a corpse. I need fresh meat.

There absolutely is the need,ps3 won't suddenly stop selling you know

Same here i normally get systems early so it's been a long while .
Still it depends on games since next year going have few games i want to play on PS3.
Last 3 months of the year is good time IMO.

There is no need to launch a new console in year 20XX because a Call of Duty game will release that Winter!!!

Stop reading my thoughts!!! In all seriousness, this is probably a major concern for a lot of people. Which is why Sony and Microsoft should launch their nextgen system bundled with COD XX.

I don't care how enormously powerful the PS4 or 720 are. They could have unlimited power and I wouldn't give a shit.

I just want some games and a system that won't be over $500.

Hell, I'd actually probably prefer it if next-gen wasn't a big leap graphically. Cheaper game development would do a lot in the industry. 60 fps, 1080p, some AA in there, no screen tearing, etc.

It's not going to happen, but oh well. I can dream.

Day one if it has an APU with discreate gpu.

What if the GPU in the APU is the same as what you are hoping would be the discrete GPU?

Whilst true, a 2013 PS4 release would cannibalise PS3 sales. Doesn't make sense given how strong their 2013 line up already is.

Q4 2013 wouldn't cannibalize PS3 sales because iirc software runs dry. Given what one of the members here posted about Rocksteady being under pressure to release their next gen game by August, it could stand to reason that we may see PS4 around that time. At worst, it's going to be Q1 2014.

stfu! the same thing happened to PS3 and it got rolled by 360. No need my ass.

PS3 got rolled by 360 not because it only came out late, but because it came out late and was way more expensive than it's competition while it didn't seem any more powerful as most 3rd party games performed better on 360.

EDIT: I don't mind if PS4 does come out in fall 2013, the earlier it comes out, the earlier the slim PS4/price drop will happen and that is when I'll jump in for next gen

People who will be buying the ps3 this late won't be early adopters of any of the 2 next gen consoles imo.

What does that mean?so it will have a cpu, an apu and a gpu?not following the tech but what is a APU?

An APU is a combination CPU & GPU on the same die afaik (for general computing and more). People here are asking whether the PS4 will have an APU alongside another discrete GPU for actual utilization in games as opposed to other multimedia and OS function being tied to APU alone.

Have you put it together again? Do you have CFW already? I did the exact same thing, except I discovered afterwards that the PS3 won't launch programs on the hard drive if it fails a check on the blu-ray drive. Also, it won't install new firmware, so I got stuck in a firmware update loop too.

Anyway, a bit on topic, if AMD is going to design something that requires new manufacturing technology, I'd think they'd test it on high-end video cards first. They're high-margin, low-volume products that are a lot more forgiving of delays and shortages than a console launch would be. We don't have long before AMD would have to launch something like that in order to learn lessons in time for them to be applied to the console manufacturing.

I bet the first next gen COD will just be the same as PS3/360 versions but better graphics, similar to the PC. I also think the first Battlefield is where people will see a huge leap next gen, EA could market the next gen Battlefield as the first rue next gen shooter, with huge maps and 64 players online.

How much would that cost?

I'll wait for a price cut if it's $500.

I am pretty certain there'll be a sub $500 option. I am expecting two models $50 apart with the ceiling at $500.

Pertaining to price, if there is an instalment plan option or subscription model available past a certain down payment (say 60%-70% of retail value) then would a high price hinder the sales significantly if at all?

I don't know, it would probably effect it some way.

I wonder if software sales get affected from the last console after the new console gets released. Anyone have sales data for late PS2 games like GoW2, God Hand, Man Hunt 2, Tomb Raider Anniversary and Need for Speed ProStreet.
