Now this has been awhile and I have mentioned this here before (I think) but I got the vibe from Spencer he truly felt buying all these companies and putting their games on Gamepass was a magic bullet to get people to buy their console
It might have been if they stuck with exclusives minus COD which they were legally obligated to share.

I really thought this generation was a comeback one for xbox, I guess not. No TV TV and just games with solid performance and then they fucked it with going all in on gamepass.
Their best this gen until Indy were two Forza Horizon games and Flight Simulator.

Bethesda underperformed and all the games were on PC anyways.

Nobody had a good reason to actually buy Xbox hardware.

Even the $599 PS3 sold more in the same timeframe than xbox series has. Shame, because hardware wise, its the best xbox console by far! It's actually silent! Unlike my PS5, which sounds like I'm in a fucking barber shop! They have the most comfortable controller too.

You might want to have it repaired/replaced then as the PS5 has never been loud besides the disc drive spinning up, Even my Pro is nice and quiet, it does make some noise but it's mostly very quiet.

Controller subjective, both are comfortable to me.

Coil whine on my ps5 waa horrible.

Now with the pro i hear nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Phil and all the upper tier managers for Xbox should have been fired for the embarrassing failure of the Xbox console. It feels like they're just going to get away with what they've done scot-free.
Still can't believe you guys haven't figured it out. Senior leadership, including those that Phil reports to, do not give a fuck about console sales. They. Do. Not. Care. They want recurring revenue from Game Pass subs and that's it.

Xbox Series S/X are the last "traditional" console the company will produce. Next go around we _may_ get a handheld/something Switch-like or a super compact streamer-style box that basically just streams Game Pass titles.

- All their exclusive games on PC. killing the purpose of owning the console
- Release their big games on PS5. making it the default choice for console-only owners. why would someone buy an Xbox if he can't play PlayStation games on it? but can play Xbox games on PlayStation ( even if they come late, they will come, its not like there are shortages of games or a backlog of games ).

I gotta say, I honestly didn't think the management could be this stupid but here we are.

Just after owning Activision too. just when they got this huge list of Devs and IPs. along with big studios they already own.... they decided to fuck the Xbox.

imagine if all these games were Xbox exclusive. from Indiana Johns to Doom etc. who the fuck wouldnt buy an Xbox??

but nope. it's in their DNA to be stupid. can't cure that.

I was over exaggerating saying its like a barber shop but there's definitely an audible buzz coming from the power supply unit. Both mine and my cousins have it. PS5 is much quieter than PS4 though!

Pro costs £700! Fuck that! I'll wait for PS6.

Then you will wait a long time

I just watched the video... in all of his talk, he didn't bring up the 30% cut on all transactions if you have your own storefront. That's what a console ultimately is. that's what Xbox is loosing.

And this is something I have said too: the Xbox business model is at odds with itself.

On one hand, you have GP, which requires a constant drop of games (the incentive is not the quality of games but the quantity).

And on the other hand, you are trying to sell the same game (where the incentive is to make the best game possible).

The latest Forza and Flight Simulator show this dilemma taking place:

Both games had to drop on GP, and their quality suffers from it.

and in the case of something like Indiana Jones (where the game has quality and it's ready to drop on GP) you don't market the fricking game.

theoretically speaking Xbox NEEDS a storefront; a console; that's the only justification for it. BUT....who is gonna use you storefront if none buy on it?

People keep saying they gave no reason to buy the console. What do you think the series s and gamepass is for then? That was their proposition but it hasn't paid off. Their strategy failed. They even lost more marketshare to sony. Xbox one owners switched to PS5.

A lot of people think the Series S was a mistake, but I'm not sure how many XSX sell this generation with no Series S alongside it.

You're probably looking at a significant drop off in total sales.

Their mistake was creating a mandate for games to have to release on both systems and on the same day.

I do wonder how much this hurt their potential Christmas sales…

aJkRa7V.jpeg

Seems like December was their biggest year on year drop for sales in terms of %

Probably little to no impact. Casual gamers buy at Christmas significantly more than core gamers who buy year round, but particularly earlier in the generation. Xbox has been running out of casual gamers to buy for years now and their core gamers have largely already bought the system. They're why you even see people still pushing for console wars like Japanese soldiers isolated on islands after WW2 ended.

That Halo announcement is coming and everyone knows it.

Can you imagine Sonic on Nintendo? No, not post Sega's collapse, but like a year into the Sega Saturn? There is no turning back once that happens.

Xbox Series X will probably be my last Xbox console.

The only way I'd stick around is if they merge the OS platforms (PC and Xbox) into one big open ended super console, which would be the smartest move they could ever make at this point in time. They would just have to bite the bullet on the modding and emulation scene.
Agreed. This gen is where I jump ship on Xbox too. They lost the plot a loooooong time ago and then sustained idiots like me on promises of games that either never happened or ended up trash.

If the series S had never launched, the baseline for series games would be the 12 tflop X. Instead of the 4tflop S which GPU wise was less capable than the previous generation Xbox one x.

Visually the games for series generation could have been more compelling without such a low bar as common denominator.

And many games that ended up being defacto exclusives for ps5 due to development issues shoehorning onto series s (memory limitations etc) would have launched day and date with ps5.

Most don’t have a gaming PC so I don’t think it’s that simple.

Yup, for console players owning a PS5 was a far more obvious choice given how much more appealing the exclusives and overall platform is and there was very little reason to also buy a Xbox Series in addition to a PS5

Not the case during the 360 era where you missed out greatly not owning multiple platforms

They might pull a Nintendo and go full handheld for the next console. Mobile SoCs are now powerful enough to run most stuff at a decent compromise between speed and detail.

But that would require an XboxOS, since standard Windows is a shitshow, 15% performance penalty compared to game-oriented Linux distros (SteamOS, Bazzite etc.)

Yep, and now that they are also putting all their games on other consoles it's been the killing blow.
And their games aren't even selling that well on Playstation either.

Tango should be a good example of why even going 3rd party might not keep Xbox afloat.

Edit:

Cod does, though, obviously.

MS can't show that they have thrown in the towel and hardware is an afterthought, any sales is just good to have.

Focus is GamePass which would work great with small-hardware handheld.

Yeah it’s been a lacking generation, no real system seller to speak of. And most games has been on Xbox One as well. I have a couple friends that are still on Xbox One, kinda bizarre that it’s possible to essentially skip a whole generation but that’s how it is, it’s probably less than a handful of Series exclusives.

Indiana Jones is imo their absolute top game. It’s a total banger of a game, especially for older folks growing up with Indiana Jones movies. But it’s coming to PS5 so no system seller. And it’s a one and done type of game and in two weeks people expect something else so it’s not really solving the software output problem for people already in the ecosystem.

2025 looks stacked at least. The Xbox Direct was awesome. Gamepass subscribers gets to eat good already with the surprise Ninja Gaiden 2 UE5 remake release.

But I don’t see any light in the tunnel for Xbox as a console. They could pull the plug and start a new generation early, or do like Nintendo after WiiU and go hybrid/handheld. But without proper exclusives there is no way forward, whatever they do will be a niche thing for a smaller audience than any previous Xbox.

I have completely moved over to PC now. For PS too but then there is at least delays making it a tough choice. On Xbox there is only BC keeping it from being tucked away, I still have some old disc games that aren’t available on PC.

Btw, I got a survey a couple days ago asking about the Windows Xbox app. Thought they would finally try to evaluate what to do there to improve it. But the questions were pointless, asking what you thought was best about it. Essentially asking for pats on the back. Should’ve asked the real important questions instead, like what’s the worst thing about it, why aren’t you using it. Then they could’ve got some useful data and could’ve tried doing something about it. So I just said that the best thing about it was that it was possible to insert Gamepass games into Steam so I didn’t have to use the Xbox app. 🤷‍♂️

Cod does, though, obviously.

When people talk about Microsoft being the biggest third party publisher, they’re mainly talking about COD, Minecraft and Candy Crush.

If people wanted Xbox Game Studios stuff they’d have bought an Xbox by now.

There isn't much truth to this.

As I said the mandate absolutely is a problem, but the idea that Series S isn't meeting the minimum requirements PC gaming is just not true. It's not holding things back any more than PC gaming is.

We've seen the mandate hurt it due to games that could have been held back, but these are actual few and far between.

The reality is that the XSX simply would be sitting somewhere around 20 million units, maybe less by itself, and that would have been a disaster.

I don't think MS gives a fuck about their hardware sales these days. They make tons of money from publishing their games all over the shop, and is quickly becoming one of the biggest publishers in the industry.

Just look at their line-up for 2025. Pretty much awesome stuff.

They'll probably release a couple of machines in 2026/2027 (handheld and more traditional "console") just to have a option for the folks who still want their hardware. It's not like the cost will matter too them.

For me, PC Game Pass made their console totally unnecesary.
