oh for fucks sake

I'm just saying that maybe it's better sometimes to leave it to the publisher? That's terrible in a lot of cases, sure. But it would have reduced confusion and people going apeshit.
They do leave it to the publisher a lot of times. Ubisoft is revealing a new IP this E3. Guess who could spoil it for just for shits and giggles if they wanted to?

But news is news. A hotly anticipated game being delayed is news. We see people posting all over GAF and other places across the internet saying how they already have scheduled time off work or planned to do so. His responsibility is to inform them, not wait around for Sony or Hello Games.

It's so strange to me that people get bothered when journalists go outside what publishers want them to do. The only harm and confusion inflicted here came not from Jason but from salty little manchildren with zero perspective on video games.

What? :p

Im just saying that it didnt help confusion, thats all! I think that if his story contained a solid date and reason, it wouldnt have been as bad.

Well gosh darn howdy I am straight up rustled that I'm getting information sooner as a consumer.

How dare Jason and Kotaku hurt people's feelings by delaying this game!
I see your snark, but dont you fucking put me in that reddit asshole category. My comment was respectful and at least thought out.

What confusion tho

All I know is that Sony and HG announced that NMS will be released on June 21st, then Jason posted his story that the game will be delayed and instead of recognizing that his track record on these things is like almost 100% correct every time and that the game might really have been delayed the supposed 'fan community' tried their best to prove that Jason is wrong by spreading fake tweets, fake ad flyers, calling '30 Gamestops' and generally just taking a shit on Jason + Kotaku

Kotaku did exactly what they always do when they receive info; it's a big part of the NMS community that fucked up really bad

There was no confusion, just aggressive denial.

Edit:Speaking of denial (my own this time), on Steam the date is still unchanged.

You're absolutely right about the community aspect. But if you separate the assholes, my only issue is that the story created more questions than answers. When is it delayed to? Why the delay? Is it legit?

Then people begin to start filling in the blanks with bullshit, creating perceptions. And Perceptiin usually equals reality to a lot of folks. Thats not on Jason and its bullshit that he and others like Keza was harrassed. Thats terrible. I just think that it all was an unintended mess. I dont think Jason intended for it to get crappy like that

Thats more true. Its sad. And no amount of proof and evidence I provided changed their minds

Edit: to Jason's track record that is

The story raised questions and that's bad? It provided new info (that the game was delayed), that's more than the publisher gave us.

Again, you imply that they intended to not say, when one of the main points of the story was that they havnt landed on a new date yet. Sony coming out and saying "yeah we're delayed, dont know till when though" would have been light years worse than Jason breaking the story.

That Reddit is a steaming pile of hot shit. Sorry you gotta deal with that shit Jason. I mean do they really believe him posting a rumor forced Sony to delay the game? What sense would that make?

Not necessarily. That depends on the news. Like I said, I respect Jason and Kotaku. They've had a lot of solid work. Certainly work I follow. But some investigative journalism just does more harm than good. In this case, it just caused a bunch of noise. What was the benefit of publishing the story other than site traffic? What did this story do other than cause confusion?

I run a youtube channel primarily focused on the game. The comment section was pretty hectic, confused, and even a bit angry when I talked about it two nights ago. Not very common in the core No Man's Sky community.

Citation needed.

Pls provide example of how knowing the truth causes harm.

Well, it's good that it's releasing before the big AAA games start hitting. Should still get plenty of attention.

Reddit is the worst.

I'm glad I don't even know what reddit is.

Looks like it's populated by clownshoes.
I frequent that subreddit and I can say that its usually pretty good. A pretty welcoming community actually. But man did the fucking crazies come out this week. I think the mod actually corrext that wording to make it sound less crazy

Isnt Kotaku blacklisted by Bethesda and Ubisoft for this very reason? For basically spoiling two major AAA titles that the publishers would have rather kept secret until they could reveal the surprise themselves? I mean, Im one of the biggest Ubi haters on this board, but I kinda agree with them, even though a full on blacklisting seems extreme.

But then you get the Prey 2 story which to me seems more reasonable where the truth was good to have.

You are suggesting that without a date, the audience can't handle the news. I'm here to tell you I can and everyone should be able to.

The confusion and outrage was an embarrassment. The ones responsible for it are the ones who were confused and outraged, full stop.

If you feel it's better to hold information back then you should just ignore the news and go on about your day until you hear something more official.

We should be able to handle rumors and leaks as vague or specific as they are.

This late in the game? No it wouldn't. It would piss people off if sony waited much longer to say something. At some point people make plans for the plans you tell them and waiting until their hype is max because the date is so close is begging for pissed off people. Check out the people here who already were posting they were cancelling their orders over what was a rumor at the time.

I'm glad kotaku at least gave us heads up and maybe even forced Sony and hello games hand to actually bother telling us already when the game is so close. At least I had enough warning to change my plans though I know there are some who this was still too late.

I hate playing games in the dead of summer but maybe digging myself a cave on an ice planet will make it better. Delays suck but I'll accept it.

Why is half this thread discussing comments on reddit? We already know that place is a dumpster fire, no need to bring it here.

He could have alerted people weeks ago before telling retailers. Just as he could have told people he wasn't going to make 2015, instead of telling people "it's a secret." If he feels bad, it's more about money and the product, not about us. If he cared about what the players actually thought, he'd have been honest sooner. Which is fine. He owns a company, it's about making money. But don't pretend it's anything else.

Are you for real? You don't think Sean feels regret and stress for missing the deadline? Maybe you've never been a position of leading a project, but that responsibility weighs heavily on you, and when a deadline is missed you feel some personal responsibility for that.

And "it's about making money"? People don't toil away for three years, with no life and tons of stress, for just money; they have to be passionate about what they're doing. People don't run indie game studios because they think they're going to get massively rich. This is Sean's dream game, and I'm kind of shocked that you'd accuse Sean of all people of being driven primarily by greed.

There's always a new group of kids hitting the age where they have the time and ability to spend all day posting on a forum but don't have the experience to understand how things work. There are also adults who are just morons.

We saw conspiracy theories and anger aggressively thrown around in forums when Half-Life 1 was delayed in the 90s and we'll be seeing conspiracy theories and anger when Half-Life 3 is delayed in the 2020s. It's unfortunate, but I don't see it changing.

overall it's pretty awful since they have the same hands off attitude towards harassment and toxic behavior that twitter has. so when you have a site full of shitlords who can influence things with votes you tend to get mostly shitlord quality content. it's a poor philosophy that permeates most of the site. kotaku in action is a thing that's allowed to exist, for example.

but there are specific subreddits that that well moderated and generally okay. usually they're ones that are about a very narrow topic. like a single game.

The only one I frequent is r/gamedev. That's a pretty good, well moderated subreddit

It's full of people that think being able to be racist, sexist, and pedophilic needs a safe haven on the internet.

So yes.

These comparisons are getting ridiculous, tarring all reddit users with the same brush is simply foolish, there are some shitty subreddits, there are some great subreddits, just like there are some shitty posters on Gaf and some great posters. It's an internet discussion platform, not a group think way of life.

Cancelled pre-order. Game must have some serious issues considering that they delayed this like last-minute.

Maybe will get it after release if reviews are positive.

Don't understand this. They literally explained why it's delayed and we've seen video from IGN that looked great. They just want to polish it.

I mean did you think Mirrors Edge or Uncharted 4 had serious issues because of their delays?

It's only delayed a month and a half. That time can only be to polish the game.

If it was a serious issue, it probably wouldn't take a month and a half to fix and would have more so been delayed to 2017.

A game going gold, manufacturing, and shipping to warehousing for distribution to retail alone takes 3 weeks in of itself.

What "serious" issues you think a small dev with an ambitious project would manage to fix in a mere 4 weeks prior to gold.

Just something to think about.

That's faulty reasoning.

Certification and retail release take about a month but they would have had to have done that before the delay too.

Unless the delay was because they failed cert, they have 7 extra weeks of development.

Sean Murray stated in a recent announcement that the delay was for the sake of polishing the game further.

Of course people could read further into this implied statement and assume his statement for polishing the game further actually means fixing a serious problem, but that would be conspiracy theory crafting and making this issue bigger than it really is.

You can either take Sean Murray at his word that the game was pretty much done but he wanted just some additional polishing to bring it to his standards, or assume he's a liar and there is a bigger underlying issue at hand.

Considering this is the same Sean Murray that managed to fix Burnout 3 during his time at Criterion and introduce the Take Down Cams into the game in matter of days, I'm more inclined to believe the statement that NMS simply needs some additional polishing and not fixing some "serious problem"

I heard that Kotaku and especially Jason were responsible for the flood that hit Hello games. The story goes that Jason was lining up sandbags to guide the flow of water directly to their building. He seems to be really have it out for Hello games and NMS in particular, one can only assume as to his motivations, but an anonymous source told me that he feels personally insulted by the existence of Joe Danger, a game he feels is an affront to good taste, good game design and a poor attempt to try and dethrone the king, Trials, a franchise which Jason cares so deeply about he apparently had a tattoo of the game's logo on his arse.

I feel the same way man.

Yeah.

For anyone who believes that Miyamoto quote in regards a "Delayed game is eventually good"

Only needs to see examples like Too Human, Duke Nukem Forever, or even Perfect Dark Zero that show case even delayed games can turn out to be terrible.

Considering the delay is only a month and some change I feel safe saying it's just polish. If it were a serious problem I think he'd probably want more time than that or not even have a date in mind yet.

That it is a month and a half tells me it is something he already knows how to fix and has a good idea of how long it will take him to fix/polish it.

This delay does not have me worried at all. Now if it was 6 months more or something I might be a little worried.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

This x100. A little over a month delay is not a huge deal, if this was pushed to Winter 2016 or even 2017 that would cause some concern on the overall product.

PRoblem with reddit is the shitty subreddits tend to bleed into the other subreddits. ANd gaming subreddits in general have people from the shitkotakusays subreddit (or whatever it's called, pretty much gamergate's subreddit) all over beacuse that subreddit is full of people who like games (as witnessed by the fact they care, good or bad, about a gaming website). So they bleed into all the other gaming subreddits. Some of the subreddits are worse than others about it (the Fallout one seems to have less of them for whatever reason). And in general they usually aren't too focused anymore on the gamergate stuff unless it gets brought up. For example Kotaku saying something they don't like and then they come out of the woodwork. WHich is what is seems happened a lot in the NMS subreddit. Kotaku said something that upset NMS fans and the gamergate people saw Kotaku and a chance to attack them again. Which is why NMS looked pretty chill until Kotaku said something that upset hte fans and then the gamergate ones had a reason to be all shitty towards Kotaku again (and a reason to try to foment more resentment towards Kotaku).

I mean you could see it happening if you were on the subreddit a day or two ago. Kotaku says something and all the sudden you get the usual, "Oh, it's Kotaku. They're shit reporting/Click baiters/they're irresponsible game journalism!". You could tell a lot of comments were from the usual group that already hates Kotaku anyways and I give you 2 guesses which group that is....

I think you entirely misread the post you replied to. The parent post's point was that you said Hello would only have four extra weeks of dev because of manufacturing, but you're counting that time twice – Hello still has the three original weeks of manufacturing time from the original date, plus seven new weeks.
