Great purchase. They've been going great work for PlayStation for years. This ensures none of the other big players especially MS can get their hands on them.

all they do is port stuff or remake graphics... like... uhm, they are great when it comes to that... but have you seen their only game, as in the only game they ever made and not ported/remastered?

how are they not remasters? They are great remasters. But the point stands they haven’t created mechanics from the ground up ever so why would any expect them to be able to all of a sudden?

But here's the thing. Sony will always need games remastered so they are the perfect purchase.

Their first game is going to be original. I'm assuming their future will rely on how that game performs sales and technical wise. If it's a fail I'm guessing they will be back to remasters and ports. If it's a success then full steam ahead.

they are. they still run the original code underneath their graphics engine.
it's like Halo 1/2 Anniversary, which are also remasters, because the original game code is used, with an additional modern graphics engine running on top of that original code.

a remake would be a game that has been recoded from the ground up, based on an already existing game. See stuff like REmake 1, 2 and 3 or Final Fantasy VII Remake.

As if there are no new studios who are formed from the ground up and create original IPs. At least Blue Point already has some experience creating big games even if it is on remasters and remakes.

Demon's Souls remake is absolutely not a remaster. It's a full remake. Everything outside of the AI (which they kept to keep the game faithful somehow) was remade from scratch. Every asset is theirs. They made the game from scratch and damn did they make it wonderfully.

People need to learn the difference between a remaster and a remake.

I mean, Blast Factor was their very first game all the way back 2006. 2006 was the launch year for the PS3. Clearly Bluepoint has come a long way since then.

The developers in the studio have a lengthy career before they formed Bluepoint, we're talking about some of the leaders who developed things like the Turok series and the Metroid Prime games. The leaders in the studio have been making games for a very long time and they've been very successful at it so it's really not as if they're new to doing this and they now have some of the most successful modern studios to work with.
I think the reactions on here are very much what everybody would have been expecting really, it's the same with anything to do with first party studios, irrelevant of which company owns them.
I obviously can't comment on the quality of their upcoming game any more than anybody else on here can but the people involved have a fantastic history in gaming and they're in very a good place now in terms of support and guidance and seem genuinely seem happy to be there so I'm more than happy to see what they're able to produce over the next few years.
Of course, I'm aware that there are a couple of people on here who perhaps in a position to comment on their new game but it's not really any of us who are talking about it.

Sony signed her studio a 2nd party deal a month after she left Stadia or so because they know the teams she built delivered (before and after she left) a lot of hits. And well, her and her studios have an insane CV, but she also built a team with a lot of very talented and experienced former coworkers who also worked in many hits.

2nd party doesn't exist, its a third party studio that's current game is being published by Sony. Like I said, someone living on past glories who has failed miserably in recent times will not be purchased by Sony unless they put out consistent high meta critic games on time and on budget. Time will tell.

The fact that not only did Sony buy them but have given the ok for them to make a original game tells me those REMAKES are a big deal for Sony to do such a thing.

I means its not simply a "Remaster" as what other port studio do you fucking see being bought by a major publisher to create a game from the ground up? So me thinks Sony knows more then you or me in regards to game development and that the team has grown and those remakes are substantial enough for Sony to see the indeed can make a game from the ground up. A remake is no where near some simple remaster job, it literally involves some of the same if not exact same things you need to in a brand new game in the first place.

If that is enough for Sony to fund a new game under them, I see no reason to be worried with this whole concern thing when the very publisher that bought them doesn't seem to think so to the point of funding an original game.

REmake 1, yes. 2 and 3 are really re-imaginings. They aren't the same.

FFVII Remake is definitely NOT a remake. The name is misleading. It is a sequel that involves time traveling and alternate universes to literally Remake and change the events of the original game.

XDEV doesn't count really and Nixxes barely counts, since they don't make their own games. Even Sony themselves say they now have "16 studios" which means they don't count XDEV. They do seem to count Nixxes in that 16, strangely, but Nixxes are part of the PD support studio group, a separate entity within PS Studios.

They really have 15 internal studios now. And a bunch of support staff.


No. ForwardWorks is not part of PlayStation Studios.

They're a separate corporation owned by Sony that only does mobile games.

Sony has their support studios group called PDSG, which Nixxes is part of.

What do you mean you don't get this purchase? Bluepoint knows to the bare metal games from Naughty Dog, Team ICO, From Software and others, they have all the tech pedigree of the top tier AAA studios, they know what Playstation is all about and they are about to use that knowledge to create something of their own. Can't wait to see it.

They made the game from scratch and damn did they make it wonderfully.

Your post is spot-on, but this last part is a bit of a stretch. Bluepoint had a blueprint, which was From's game.

It's a whole lot easier to take an existing product and add bells and whistles, than to create something new from scratch. This post is not meant to marginalize Bluepoint, because it's a fantastic (if expected) pick-up by Sony, but it's not fair to really put them on the God-tier pedestal when we've not really seen any original creations from them.

Now, do they have the chops to do their own thing? Maybe. Probably.

They did redo the art for both SOTC and Demon Souls.

But yes, they dont have any experience in game design or storytelling. It will be interesting to see if they get help from outside or use their somewhat limited experience from doing remakes and remasters. Id suspect they might have learned a thing or two just porting incredible games like Uncharted, MGS, SOTC and Demon Souls.

Do you seriously believe Nintendo would have let a third party studio (one that had never worked with them before) to touch their legacy IPs?

Bluepoint is partly made up by old Retro Studios members, which brought Metroid Prime to life, one of the most successful installments of Metroid IMO.
