PS5 Pro devkits arrive at third-party studios, Sony expects Pro specs to leak

It makes no sense for the PS5Pro to go *all in* on power right now:
  1. It would cost too much to source components for something that will not be the main seller for the rest of the generation
  2. It would lessen the impact of the inevitable PS6
  3. It doesn't need to be super powerful as Sony doesn't live or die on that hill (unlike XBox)
  4. It would be wiser to trial some things that will come to PS6 early without fully committing to expensive hw
  5. It needs to be simple for the developers to have any uptake, so adding exotic hw that won't be used is super wasteful

I expect it to be similar to PS4Pro:
  • Increase in CPU frequency (minor)
  • Increase in CPU L3 cache (simplest thing they can do to provide an uplift)
  • Increase in GPU CU count
  • Increase in GPU frequency (minor)
  • Change in RDNA base IP
  • Some custom hw done to the GPU (which will pave the way for more radical GPU work in PS6)
  • Thermal management changes (perhaps different enclosure/fans etc)
Done - they could have planned this out and done most of the design in 2021-22 and have been refining plus getting sw ready since.

Going bonkers with swapping out the cpu to Zen4 + 3d cache (which someone keeps advocating) is completely unneeded for what they want to achieve.

I'm guessing ~18-20TFlops (as counted by the people for whom this is the most important number in the world).
we need to stop this idea that making the pro as good as it can be will ruin the ps6 not even the best tech the pro could use right now would come close to what the ps6 will use in 2028-9 so theres that also whether the pro is slightly better or significantly better most people (especially casuals wont get it) so the ps6 would be completely fresh for them. what you do by gimping the pro and not going all in as you can is turn off a decent amount of hardcore from purchasing it. we also were asking for a cpu upgrade because in sonys own words and obviously what consumers expect/want the pro should do double what the ps5 does on the same workload so either double the resolution, double the settings, or double the framerate and the last 2 you cant do without improving the cpu (no slightly increasing the clocks is nowhere near enough)

I get it. You want a super powerful machine.

There are multiple issues with that approach, but we can start with the most obvious...

It won't sell in large enough numbers to get the cost of goods sold down low enough due to lack of economies of scale.

This is essentially the issue Xbox has, the don't place large enough orders so the get crap prices from suppliers.

So now what you are saying is build a machine with the latest tech in 2024 which will cost far too much to manufacture and would have to be priced north of 700.

Can you not see how this is unrealistic?

In your posts you take a grab bag of tech and claim it can all be used together, 3d cache, zen4, rDNA whatever.

You have a naïve view of engineering and it shows.

You will be disappointed with the pro, despite the fact that it will be a major upgrade over both the base PS5 and the series x.

Performance doesn't just come from bigger numbers on a spec sheet, I would have thought this gen has shown that.

PS5 Pro's goal is to counter the "RTX On" (raytracing, image reconstruction, higher framerates, etc) trend that seems to be pushing so many hardcore gamers towards PC gaming over the past few years and, now that we know Microsoft won't be doing an enhanced console this generation, making PS5 Pro the best place to enjoy console multiplatform games for all the people who own all console platforms.
also the performance quality mode differential

thats if they price it cheap but ive been a proponent make the pro more expensive 600-700 so you arent taking large losses the pro doesnt have to be cheap (another reason comparing it to ps6 is dumb). also i want zen 5 not 4. your acting like the pro wont be at least 600 anyway even if the specs are completely cheap so thats not what the discussion is anyway

honestly if we believe what Sony said that the PS5 is in the later stages of its lifecycle than there is no reason for them to release a PS5 Pro ZERO.

Maybe they learned that there will be no Series X Pro and instead Microsoft was going to try and jumpstart the Next Gen and Sony has decided to revamp the Pro into eh 6. Give is more power / gpu and keep refining it to launch within the same window as the NextBox?

Developers can have the Current kits which give them a baseline and they would have time to get new units and improve on them one there next 2-3 years.
Providing a real NEXTGEN feeling

As much as I hate to say it, you have a point. The temp CEO has put alot of doubt into the existence of a ps5 pro sku.

I mean there is plenty of room left in the PS5 for developers to tap into. We're 3 years into the consoles lifespan. If Sony and third party continue to release engine modifications and developer tools to get more from the system we can easily go 3 years without a new system.

Rushing to NextGen will suck for us power hungry people, but Im not sure many people will rush out to buy a 699 console when the PS5 is perfectly playable for 4K

He never said latter stages that's a misquote from ign, what he actually said was latter half which is another 4 years and that's perfect for the Pro.

theres also no reason they couldnt at least add 3d cache if they really are stupidly sticking to zen 2
They don't need 3D cache... they just need to increase the CPU cache from the 8MB its currently at to 12-16MB. That coupled with a CPU upclock would give them the headroom they need to take current 30fps games on the PS5 (that internally probably average 40fps to have that 30fps fixed output) up to 60fps. The fact that the GPU would also be more powerful and that they have more overall system bandwidth will also help with this.

I think I have said it to you many times, you need to try and understand exactly what the PS5pro would be trying to do. This is not like the PS4 vs. PS4 Pro, where they were taking 1080p games and trying to output them at 4KCBR or even native 4K. Now, this is taking the exact same PS5 game code, the same resolution, textures, geometry, same everything... and just running them at higher framerates. Thats it. So you take games running at 1440p then reconstructed to 4K@30fps and make those, 1440p reconstructed to 4K@60fps. You take games currently running at 4K DRS and at up to 40fps and make them 60fps. Then you take those same games and what is their current 60fps performance modes, and take that up to as close to 120fps as possible.

Every leak or reference about this console suggests this is the strategy they are taking. So the best advice I can give is rather than dream up what your dream spec maybe then imagine what they can do with it, instead accept that they are just trying to take the same PS5 games from 30-60fps in quality mode, and the performance mode from 60 to 120fps with a little more polish here and there. And ask yourself what kinda hardware tweaks they need to accomplish that.

i do know... thats why im going in on the cpu cause the pros goal is double framerates.

Honestly the silence is making me think that the PS5 Pro is not happening / has been cancelled.
It's apparently happening at the end of 2024. Still at least 7-10 months left. It's ways off. If we haven't anything concrete comes August, then yeah, probably ain't happening.

Silence? We don't suppose to know anything about it yet lol

Chances are people just want to keep their jobs & just not talking openly but dev events coming soon so we will get something because it's harder to pin point who leaked the info

Because it isnt. Literally people here cant even come up with a good reason for it....your games will ALWAYS have RTX at 60fps....wow, is that really why people would buy a brand new PS5 for? PS4 Pro gave us actual 4K and more storage. Theres absolutely no need for a pro this gen.

They didn't officially acknowledge the PS4 Pro until two months before launch.

If you guys remember the One X was announced before the PS4 Pro even though it was coming out a year later.
Actually, they acknowledged the existence of PlayStation 4 Neo right before E3 2016 in June (five months ahead of launch) just to confirm that there wouldn't be news about it at the show.

I'm skeptical of these rumors. Why would Sony need to do this? It's not like MS is doing it and they need to counter. Last generation it made sense because of 4K TVs becoming cheap and common.
You could say the exact same thing about PSVR. Hell, that undertaking cost them more than any PS pro type project could have cost, but it didnt stop sony from doing it did it? They dont even make those PSVR headsets PC compatible, that could have at least been a possible reason as to why they do it.

yeah the responses in these threads discounting it are strange the only legitmate concern ive seen would be if the pro is barely an upgrade (like 20%) then it wouldnt be justified

"Actual 4k". Not really though, most games were 1440p or even less, maybe with the occasional checkerboarded higher resolution. The pro was 4k in name only. RT at 60fps and ML 4k would be a much bigger impact than going from 1080p to 1440p so I don't see the issue here.

True, I meant officially announce the PS4 Pro I should have worded that better.

Helldivers II is 1080p on the PS5. What a joke. Bring on the Pro. Better sooner than later.

Well, of course there is silence, Sony wants to sell the current PS5 and will wait until there are a couple of months left to announce the PS5 pro, and cancel it at this point with the SoC finished and the kits distributed... well, I see it as almost impossible, it will come out .

Just by being able to play the basic PS5 games at the maximum resolution and framerate available, the PS5 pro will be a good purchase, playing a TLOU2 at 4K 60fps, an FF7 Rebirth at native 4K and 60fps, etc...

I'm just not sure the price would allow this to work. It would be nearing a grand in some markets.
PlayStation 5 already is nearing or above the USD$1000 mark in most countries from Latin America, Africa or the Middle East, so that's not gonna stop Sony from making the PS5 Pro two hundred dollars more expensive than the standard model, that's for sure.

What they really have in mind when going for a certain price tag is the North American market.

Mr.Phoenix Mr.Phoenix I know this isnt exactly on topic but is there any reason why Sony couldn't recycle the PS5 Pro SoC design for a PS5 Slim?
Im sure is not that simple but since they are allegedly using the same CPU again couldn't hey just cut down the GPU bits and frequency until it has just enough grunt to run base PS5 games

I thought they did something similar with PS4 Pro and Slim where they shared the SoC R&D which is why they could shrink the base PS4 SoC at same time Pro released

Similar to my thoughts on Returnal - HD2 placed their gpu budget where it mattered the most. The vfx for explosions, bullet tracers, etc. going on all at once and at such a massive scale is pretty cool from a visual standpoint. But of course I would gladly welcome resolution bump with PS5 Pro.

Tbh the only thing that would get me to pick up a Pro would be if it could play Cyberpunk with full path tracing at 1440/60 everything maxed otherwise I'm happy to wait on a PS6, whether it's possible is another thing

My PS5 might have just died (power source fried). This would probably be the worst time to rebuy a Slim. Are we pretty confident that the Pro is coming this year? What should I do?

We are still going to warn or ban for the low effort PCMR who act like they're "totally above console wars," yet only spit their trolling bait on one direction.
1080p 😂😂😂 console are so easy to use… power of ssd etc OMG

They have to prevent people jumping ship for PC in search of better perfomance...04 years in and the affordable gpus start kicking serious ass vs the Ps5 .... specially now that their games are coming more frequently to PC

People is jumping to PC in some way because they are porting their games to PC in first place. That is stupid.

Wouldn’t a console that new still be under warranty?
About the Pro though, it might not even be real. People have been talking about Switch Pro, Switch 2 for years and now they’re guessing next year. You just never know at this point.

is not rocket science champ ... if the games are on PC and PS5 you just have to choose what platform you preferably want to play... ps5 is a good budget option but 4 years later the budget pcs start to become as if not more powerfull and the PC can play anything basically... so yes power is a sale element if not the pro would not exist ... anyway is just especulation and opinions... so not need to name calling with a 2 line bad written half assed response.

Yup... the simple answer is cost.

In an ideal world, the PS5pro APU can be software-locked to perform like a base PS5. One would think that this would be a perfect way to make use of slightly defective chips, basically, chips that are defective enough not to be a PS5pro but still performant enough to be a PS5 which short of making two versions of the chip (still), is the only way this makes sense. But the problem is the cost. The issue becomes that, no matter what, no matter how you spin it, a PS5pro chip, will ALWAYs cost more than a PS5 chip.

Anyway, they go about achieving what you are suggesting, which would just end up costing them more. They are either making just one chip, then software tweaking it to have it act as either a PS5pro or PS5 APU, which would be ridiculous cost-wise, you are basically taking a $130+ APU and making it act like a sub $80 APU. Or they are making two versions of the APU, basically a PS5pro ($130+) and PS5 ($80) version, in which case the question becomes why go through all that and do even more R&D to get the vase PS5 variant of that chip when they already have a perfectly fine PS5 APU?
