I can't wait to read first impressions

I want to know if it strains the eyes and your head, I'd like to use it as a gaming monitor

When (and if) the mass market Vision with M3 and R2 arrives I might bite.

The only use this seems to have is as a screen for virtual desktop, but they didn't really get deep into that aspect. Quest 3 is going to do the majority of this shit for $500 without having to carry a battery around in your pocket. $3500 can buy you a Quest 3, a 4090 desktop, and decent router.
I think the long term goal of minimalism is to get rid of the PC tower. We're simply just not there yet. So for short term, your plan makes way more sense and is a more versatile option.

It doesn't even have enough battery life to comfortably watch most movies on the thing.

Seriously, what are they smoking?
With the optional Apple branded power cable ($500), you will be able to plug the battery pack on your belt into a wall outlet and continuously enjoy your cinema. Watch The Godfather trilogy and The Star Wars trilogy withought a single recharge!!!

For me this is where they've really fucked it, the battery life.

I can't help but think that silly external screen will be contributing to the battery life being poor along with causing the price to inflate. If it was being sold for 2k and had at least double the battery life then I would have considered it purely for the cinema features. I have over 200 4k movies purchased in my apple TV account, it would have been a cool way to experience some of them again.

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that this is not just an headset, it is a working PC.

That does make it sound more appealing as a product, but it's still a heavy price at launch.

Maybe this will gain traction in professional business and university spaces and they release a cheaper model more geared towards gaming later.

But then again, it's Apple.

But then you'd have to deal with Windows 😬

Just buy a projector, it’s cheaper and friends and family can watch the movies too and you won’t have a red ring on your face afterwards.

I don't think gaming will ever be the main goal...
But if there is one company that can pull bringing this to the masses that company certainly is Apple.

Apple's ultimate goal is to probably have a new model every other year, in fact I'm sure the less featured version is in the works for the unwashed masses (myself). The you can have one too kids, it just won't be as good version. Apple Vison SE.

This is something I've been considering for the longest time but every time I research the topic I encounter some deal breakers.

I can already do pretty much everything they've shown with a Quest 2 that I bought for $199 a year and a half ago. I've watched 3d movies and 4k movies with it and it was pretty cool. I've thought about bringing it on a plane, but I've got 4 kids and my wife would likely be pissed if I just went into my own world for the whole flight. I guess if you're single you probably have a lot of disposable income and nobody would mind if you're off in your own world for hours at a time, this could be for them.

Not unless they find a way where these things can be subsidized on a data plan model like the iPhones. That's how the vast majority get their iPhones after all.

Well... Maybe on a plan that includes Apple One or something...
They have managed to sell 2000 USD laptops and 6000 USD computers, I'm sure this won't do worse than that... But again, time will tell.

It looks nice but to me VR largely still seems like a solution looking for a problem, specially at that price.
Even with all the cool tech I don't see myself using this for a whole lot aside from watching movies/videos, and in that case I'd rather get a nice TV or Projector because at least you can share it with others

Nope I’m not getting this.

Their phones laptops and chips are good. I have a phone and an M1 laptop. They are good. But this head set. I can’t really see the point.

Are they not letting people try the headset out?

You can connect it to the external battery or just a power brick attached to the wall, having an external battery is a good idea - you can hot-swap and easily replace it, and for stationary users you can just hook it straight into your MacBook to draw power from that for 8 hours or whatever.

I have a feeling this will be a massive failure...
I mean it's launched at the wrong time, I can see this working for their employees since Apple is pro work from home but right now with the targeted ways they're going after WFH folks in not sure what success it'll have

I’m assuming you can just plug it in.

Although no one is going to wear this shirt while other people are around like they showed.

No one even wears goggles or glasses with people around. Unless they are clear.

The tech is extremely impressive (they will probably iterate it down to something more affordable), they're also seemingly using this and Apple arcade as a way to build relationships with game publishers and devs. An Apple gaming console is on the way IMO.

It will probably sell well with tech companies and rich kids asking their parents for one. And tech enthusiasts
I think they’re going with the Tesla blueprint. Sell an expensive one that few people buy then come out with mid range price/specs one and then finally a “cheap” version for mass adoption

Apple TV is their gaming console, and it works great for Apple Arcade games. How much is that? $100?

It’s absolutely absurd to try hyping this $3499 headset by saying it’ll have over 100 Apple Arcade games at launch. It’s just mobile games. Most expensive headset for the least impressive and lowest budget games.

They should’ve at least had Kojima there talking about some project, he said he was a diehard Apple fan and it’s an M2 inside, it’s quite capable and Kojima could’ve made a cool demo. Or they could’ve showed a cool Unity demo like that one with the realistic woman. Even the Disney bit could’ve been something if they showed the headset running the latest Jedi game. Or how about just showing some new cool board game or a Warhammer where you look down on your troops on the living room table and move them like real life Warhammer.

But in the end, no SteamVR compatibility and it’ll just be another closed ecosystem with a limited games library and too few system sellers that will eventually crumble and die. Can’t believe they don’t understand this after working on this and studying the VR industry for so many years. I’m doubtful with PSVR2 as well even though Sony is big on games. Apple has nothing, no internal game studios, they’re putting all their faith on third party devs to build a compelling games library, which won’t happen. The VR/AR industry is just too small for closed ecosystems, the big devs don’t want to invest unless they see a big market and they don’t even see it on Quest with 20+ million sold headsets. Why would they ever invest here?

DOA

I just checked - Quest 2 is 2-3 hours. What made you think Apple can do better without making it bulkier? This is a company that sells a smartwatch that barely lasts through the day vs. Garmin Epix that lasts a week.
The fact that they have a cable going to your ass meaning they could have included a good battery without making the actual headset bulky.
