If Ubisoft was smart, or bold... They'd drop the Open World formula and make a linear Assassins Creed game. Or wide linear, like God of War. It would sell like hotcakes. People are tired of the open world bloat fests

Assassins Creed character action game would be fucking sick.

But nope, quadruple down on open world :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The problem I see is that Ubisoft needs a generation-defining game to recover from previous flops, and this is far from being that.
Not even day defining.

With several games cracking a 9 recently KCD2, Split Fiction, MHWilds. How is ubisoft gonna keep selling full priced games when they can barely crack an 80 after a delay and seem bankrupt of ideas unless they are woke and divisive?

My girlfriend is sitting next to me, and after reading some comments, she was wondering why people are so disappointed. An 83 out of 100 is a great score. We’ve developed such a weird mindset in this industry, if a game doesn’t score 90+, it’s automatically considered not worth it, which honestly doesn’t make sense. What I dont like from some of the footage I have seen is the enemies dont react sometimes when being hit with weapons, its a bit off putting

Anyway, I think these reviews are solid enough, and I’m definitely going to play it

Yeah , Avowed has an 80 meta too. Its legit funny seeing people talking trash at well made derivative games.

They literally just did that and it flopped.

Now we need to see how the Pro handles the game.

I’m sure this will sell “some.” Enough to save Ubi? Probably not.

The irony is that an AC in Japan has been clamored for for 15 years, and when we finally get it, it’s fumbled, and may very well be the last one they make.

Looking forward to playing this but I still haven't finished up Valhalla expansion or Mirage so I'll probably get around to it in a year or so, hopefully on deep discount.

Idk when it started, maybe with the birth of social media/YT but it used to be even a score of 6 would be seen as a potentially good game, but now a 6 is downright offensive and the devs should be shuttered.

So as far as I can tell:
Positives:
-player agency/freedom of approach
-long overdue and greatly improved stealth (best tactical infiltration in the series; this was one of the few unanimous points, didn't see anyone speak negatively on the stealth)
-fun gameplay loop, not overly packed (40-60 hours, manageable map size this time)
-immersive sound design
-looks good visually
-good impressions of the two protagonists
-seasonal changes affect gameplay in meaningful ways, and look good visually

Negative
-mediocre narrative and dialogue (I kind of saw this myself in the previews, and was worried about it; I did see some call the story great, so this is a "mileage may vary" situation)
-phoned in modern day, like usual (who even cares at this point)
-conflicting takes on the parkour. Saw it's the best the series has ever had (which is currently Unity), and I also saw it feels inconsistent (which IMO the entire series has been)
-Yasuke makes combat too easy, it feels clunky, and it's not very deep overall as an action game
-still kind of copy-pasty like the rest of the series

A lot of those reviews consider it the best game in the series since Ezio/Black Flag, which is good to hear. The stealth was my biggest concern. That's all I wanted to improve here, and I saw a few reviews say this is the AC for you if that's what you want out of the series. I need some good third person infiltration with shadow/sound and verticality. Everything I've seen there is great, so definitely putting stealth on the hardest difficulty.

Need to also see Skillup and ACG.

How the fuck did we go from unity to this?

Why are the cities/towns so dead?

You guys have to give up Unity. These games aren't the same, and they aren't meant to be. These are open world RPGish AC games, and they have multiple small villages, not one huge ass city. the density is fine.

Well, it was to be expected since all AC games have this shit, I don't like it one bit, it feels completely out of place in a 100% SP game and I won't be wasting my time on any of this. They're trying too hard to be GaaS and it just doesn't fit or work for SP only games AT ALL. Like, can you imagine playing AC Origins (for example) for 1000 hrs (even 88 was a torture) to play through all these daily and weekly quests to unlock shit you don't even need. Just fuckin' get rid of all this crap already, Ubisoft.

I'm assuming the real scores will make themselves apparent in 4-6 weeks when these outlets go from "it's a solid return to form" to "AC sold poorly because it's bad".

Smells like Dragon Age all over again.

Ubisofts future solvency isn't the responsibility of games media.
