Avowed Boasts 5.9 Million Players In First Month

Can you think of a better way to estimate the number? They're not claiming it's the official number. The PKInsight article headline looks like the culprit here.
There isn't a better way. I just wouldn't bother with it for the specific conclusions being drawn by PKInsight or this thread.

Super fun game. Happy to hear so many people have played it.

Side note, this game has the best ladder mechanics ever. Can’t tell you how many times I have fallen in games like this because I didn’t grab the ladder just right. 😁
Needs a slide down option (unless I missed this).

Microsoft still playing with numbers. They can count players anyway they want, and I don't just mean GamePass people downloading it.

According to mindGame data estimations, in the first month, Avowed generated 5.9 million players worldwide, while Indiana Jones had only 4 million players. Hence, Avowed gained almost 2 million more players from the detective puzzle adventure title.
What the fuck gamers? Indiana Jones was an awesome game, and one of my favorite games from 2024. Avowed looks truly mediocre, how in the world has this drawn in more players?

RPG, Obsidian's track record.

Indiana Jones, I'd rather watch a movie over playing a linear game.

Maybe people were just getting over Indiana Jones, and there wasn’t much else in the pipeline for a so-called 'new AAA RPG's other than Avowed so it got a launch-day zerg rush, only to fizzle out because it's just mid.

I bet if they run those estimates again they'd get.

Mindshare, lol?

From Steam:

Owner estimations

If we assume even less bought it on Xbox(due to gamepass) then what about static sales? Under 500k? Way less? How many did it sell? Also, 5-9? That's a HUGE gap, it's like saying I way between 150 and 300 pounds. WTF. These numbers are meaningless, but they are trying REALLY hard to convince us this wasn't a flop. I think just the perception that this was a flop might really hurt the studio so they are working on this shit.
They removed Steam Spy? That's for the best. I remember looking at Helldivers estimates some time last year and the three in your post were somewhat in the ballpark and on the other hand SteamSpy was like 2-3 times the number

Weird, CCU didn't matter here.

Id say a good 75-80% of players come from GP subs

Which is what Microsoft wants.

This doesn't cover Xbox PC, as well as Xbox Consoles. Most people that may play this will be on console.

This shows an engagement level of 8 (Xbox) rather than 2 (Steam). Though, it does not give solid numbers.

Again, not sure why only Steam numbers are being looked at here. Even Sony games don't reach many Steam users.

Avowed is awesome.

Up there with Indi, so far.

Not sure about the players. I think pc players might have contributed more. On Xbox am seeing it below Indi in same time frame after release.

Never liked this way of measuring a games popularity or success, especially when uts on a subscription service. There were times when I had Gamepass, I would boot up a game I would never buy to just test it, but then the company would come out and say "we've had over X million players" . Seems like bending the truth.

How much money does a company like Obsidian make from having 5.9 million players? I can add up the numbers for 5.9 million in SALES but just for people "playing" the game, how much money does that rake in for Obsidian?

They've added me to that list, with just 10 minutes of gameplay. What a great metric.
Yeah, this is what makes it hard to figure out what the numbers actually mean to MS (inaccuracy in estimate aside).

Someone downloaded and started the game for 5 min - player.

Maybe just downloading counts, who the heck knows. And if someone got a month for the $1 promotion, also player.

We have no idea if these “5.9 million players” helped with retention or getting more subs. Which is why these engagement statistics are kind of suspect.

Edit: Personally I am disappointed that Indy didn’t have more uptake. It was a great game to my surprise. And it captured the spirit of earlier Indy movies and the pulp nature of them perfectly.

Yeah its pretty good. The force hate is hillarious to watch. Its on gamepass to push the service and on steam for purchase. People are enjoying it wherever they want to. If ms is happy and Obsidian is happy then thats all there is to it.

I was against the abk merger but now that ms is pro 3rd party, having cod effectively funding these wrpgs is a win. Fable, Oblivion remake and Outer Worlds 2 lets go.

It’s over that, on the Avowed thread on Resetera 85% of the players are playing through Gamepass on their poll.

I believe that number.

People in here have proper brain rot, Microsoft wants users to play the games on Gamepass it keeps people subscribed and continuing to sub to a yearly service fee the entire fucking reason of gamepass. This is the end game like every other single service they offer, subscription.

That’s great if true! I enjoy it a ton, warts and all, should’ve been day 1 on PS5 to avoid these tired console war focused discussions.

I walked past my ten year old yesterday, and to my surprise he was in the middle of being happily engaged playing the game.

..Not caring about platforms nor politics.. - there's a kind of glorious purity in that.

Yeh, a 10 year old playing a game which happens to contain political propaganda and is rated 18+.

At least we know where resetera's next generation is coming from.

Id love to see the breakdown of the splits given to studios that release games on GP. If 85% are playing your game through a sub, and I'd imagine another good chunk are either stacked cheap subs or $1 trial subs, how then is that company making any money. Or if they are getting paid the difference straight from MS then how much money are they actually making from it.

It's easy to see why they are going multiplatform to sustain this. If they announced for example 5.9m players played it on PS5 you know that's 5.9m copies sold and even after the 30% platform fee it's still a lot of actual money.
