Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

What difficulty are you on btw? They took the "easy" route with difficulty being hit harder and enemy becoming sponges. I'll keep path of the damned difficulty because fuck it, I want risk & reward, but that could explain the sponginess of it all.

Normal but I am going to try this mod because I am starting to dislike very much the sponginess of the enemies

Man I see what you mean Topher Topher with the bow's "THWOMP". The sounds in this game match the crunchiness of the combat honestly, huge kudos to the sound designer.

I'm so conflicted on which build I want, they all seem quite good.

I got this option with the female prisoner in the tutorial:

(it worked)

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I guess this game requires an Xbox controller on PC? I tried with both the Dualsense and 8BitDo controllers I have, but neither of them worked.

The game must be played on max difficulty imo, it makes exploration more rewarding, and when enemies are around your level it's still pretty easy, i don't wanna imagine how brainless normal mode is after you power up a little.
Yes, I don't feel like they were spongy on hard and I upped it to the max and still don't feel that way. The only boss I fought on this difficulty had some good amount of HP, but it was a boss.

I am noticing that most of the main story characters encounters are women. Is there a lore reason or something? It's starting to become suspicious papitos

I had my fair share of 3 skull tanky enemies in the beginning but now the situation is better, i still think the game is kinda stingy in terms of upgrade materials if you wanna try multiple lodouts.

If at least they were consistent and compared every RPGs released since 2011 to Skyrim, then that would be something but they're not of course. Funny how Witcher 3 got a pass when you cannot kill anyone in Novigrad and almost all items are static. Or how KCD 2 kills will respawn and even worse the environment is really really static, no persistence like Creation engine did.

But I'm sure this was done in good faith to have constructive criticism. /s

Maybe Avowed should have downgraded to shit combat, shit traversal, shit world design with repetitive caves, same pattern side quests, level scaling, insert AI routines that are simplistic and easily become erratic and then a huge amount of jank and bugs ala Bethesda classics. Then Avowed would be masterpiece

I'm sure also every adventure RPG will be compared to Zelda BOTW/ToTK physics wise from now on and its really not worth playing anything else.

Starfield had the creation engine persistence and physics. Did it change anything for what the product is?

And of course he was shitting on Starfield anyway regardless of physics and persistence systems. 🤷‍♂️

So far this game is more evidence that review scores have just really lost the plot. And not because this game was scored unfairly, but because it was scored perfectly.

The problem is that games that run, with basically no other redeeming qualities whatsoever will still score within spitting distance of this games 80, when they should be hovering closer to 50 or 60. Avowed is an action focused RPG with very good world design/exploration and combat. Those are like the two most important elements for this game to nail down, and it does it well.

A game with a way bigger scope that botches its execution will often score well above an 80 basically as a ‘you tried’ consolation. Games that really do nothing well can easily score in the 70’s.

You can’t trust people to be discerning and actually read impressions to see if they might like the game. So many people see the 80 and immediately dismiss it, and make all the assumptions they want about the games quality. And I just really think the issues with that way to look at games are glaringly obvious for a game like this. A 10 would be a ridiculous score for this game. But by god does it earn it’s 8’s in a way that many 85+ games never really seem to do.

I have only played The Outer Worlds and A little bit of Avowed, but these Obsidian games are not well written. Every character feels 1 dimensional and static. The dialogue sounds like it has been completely sanitized. Both games seem as if they are geared toward young teenagers with Marvel quips and all. Do developers not realize that the majority of single player gamers are over 30? Both games are mature rated but they have the most vanilla characters I can remember

It doesn't help that the game worlds are completely devoid of life as well

Almost 20 hours in now, have the quest to move on to the 3rd area, but am clearing up side stuff. Absolutely having a blast using a pistol in one hand and a spell book in the other!

I agree that the writing is very simple and not that great, specially coming from KCD2 but the gameplay is a blast, the world is fun to explore, the gameplay and combat is really fun and I personally can't put the controller down which is in my opinion a good sign. But yes, the writing and the story are not the strongest points in this game unfortunately. I wish it had more depth and characters were more interesting to talk to. I do feel as well that there are not many consequences from my decisions which is weird.

Anyway I think the game is much better than the Outer Worlds, at least from a gameplay perspective

Changing the subject, how the heck do you make money in this game? The money rewards when finishing quests are very low and I cant barely buy new weapons or anything other than food and lockpicks lol

Nice I love mods like this, Ill check this out.

For example I thought Veilguard was a piece of shit overall... but I'll give credit in that I really liked the combat modifiers they put as options so you could have lethal and aggressive enemies while keeping their health pool at normal. I really hate overly spongy enemies, but I want to be challenged.

I want to cut through them if I play perfect, but get punished if I mess up.

It kinda messes up my immersion when I have to hit someone 20 times in the head with a greatsword.

Very rarely you find these weapons that are 1-2 level better than yours, like yesterday in the second map i found an excellent 2 handed sword and a unique excellent 2 handed sword back to back, i had to change my build accordingly :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

First time that happen in like 20 hours.

I just got a pop-up saying
enemies of a higher quality tier than you display an 💀 icon next to their health bar and will be highly resistant to attacks from weapons and abilities.

Maybe that's what y'all are running into with "damage sponges"? Because so far everything dies from a few swings.

Alright, finally I can play the game in earnest now.

I really appreciate more and more games doing the 'lore' option in dialogues and cut-scenes, it's beneficial for recalling things and also brief explainers for people who might not be too well versed in the backstory.

Disagree here.

In tutorial area I have just met couple of ppl who have become my companions.

One of them is a smuggler, opinionated, hates Aderyian empire, keeps pulling jibes on others.

Other one is dutiful, in MCs awe cause they are the envoy.

Well written personalities, first two in what am sure there will be plenty of characters in game.

Also, dialogue is snappy, allows you to role play without being confusing.

All conversations allow you to role play. If you look at all options, for example, one option will allow boasting, maybe other makes you look cowardly, other one makes you look uninterested etc.

This is how Obsidian has always written their games. I am enjoying it very much.

I've found 3 uniques so far. I haven't even done the first main mission yet. Just been clearing the first large zone doing side missions and finding all kinds of loot. Been sent to the beyond many times by some nasty groups lol. Thank goodness for quick save with F5 and not needing to worry about Schnapps.

David there is an option in the settings that when you are dual wielding the mouse buttons will automatically switch to match your left and right arms and switch back when you're not dual wielding.

Alright put in some time, here's a very early pro and con list of what I've played so far.

+ The combat and hits are so fuckin' meaty and satisfying. Feels good man.gif
+ No stamina loss on sprint, thank fuck
+ The bow is really good, my vanilla-ass demands playing with a sword + shield but I like the bow
+ Adding to above, I like that load-out swaps are just a press of the Y button, like you're choosing a different weapon in a shooter basically, quick and familiar.
+ Handsome looking game, not the sharpest IQ but very on-point for UE5 games. Nice effects and material quality, Balanced mode works superbly.
+ The diegetic humor is fun and just writes itself. Here I am fighting a mob of enemies with sword and shield and a companion just ran behind the last enemy and fucking shot him in the back of the head with a gun in this fantasy game. JFC.

- The deadzone on the controls is taking a bit getting used to. Increasing the base sensitivity seems to have helped this some.
- The UI/HUD could have used a few more options to disable things like companion health bars or your own health / essence bars.

Some pics from the SX version in Balanced mode:

One of my biggest issues is I wish I could make the HUD bigger. This isn’t unique to this game at all, but I wish more games would let me resize the HUD. My eyes suck ass lol

Having a good time with this so far.

Since most devs and publishers today default to releasing games regardless of serious performance issues, I think it's worth calling out that this game seems to be in pretty good shape. It looks nice and doesn't have any major stuttering problems.

I appreciate that this has a really good Balanced 40hz mode out of the box, but it also allows unlocking FPS on any of the modes. They know the VRR display folks would want to fuck around with options like that.

Nice. I'm using controller on PC though so alternating triggers works nicely. I find WASD cumbersome in action games. There is a good amount of aim assist for bow headshots.

Is there any way to reset the aggro of characters inside a city? I threw a grenade during a city quest and now everyone in the whole block wants to kill me, and it doesn't look like it's fixed by leaving for a bit or setting camp.

Otherwise I absolutely love this game, it's amazing how they managed to transcribe the vibe of Pillars 2 into a 3D game.

It's one of the more polished day one releases that I know of on PC. At least for my 4090 laptop setup, I would put it up there with Alan Wake 2 and Dead Island 2 in terms of just working right out of the box

A couple of more Xbox pics (Balanced mode). The night time lighting looks gorgeous. The draw distances and vistas are also pretty good.

And I agree with LordCBH LordCBH . I wish the compass could be made a bit bigger (and the health HUD could be made smaller). At least the health HUD disappears when you have the weapons sheathed.

The compass is pretty damn useful, pin points pickups etc on the map.

I'm happy they allow you to turn off those flower/fungus looking growth on your character. Grosses me out. Also, makes you wonder if it was a good design decision overall since they give you the option. Did they have doubts too?

This is based in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Godlike beings have always had them. At least they let you turn them off for the player's benefit, since you're not seeing them isometrically only, you see them right up in your face.
