Avowed |OT| Is an oath worth the weight of a crown?

I would give BG3 a big fat zero on the basis it is a turn based RPG and you couldn’t pay me to play it 😂.

(It’s obviously excellent if that’s your thing).

Avowed is sitting at an easy 8/8.5 for me at the moment - maybe 1/4 through area 2.
No joke I was certain that I liked turned-based combat. Was discussing for pages how FF7 Remake ruined Final Fantasy when they went for real time combat.
Then I played BG3…..
Don’t know what happened, maybe I’m just more tired nowadays or something, I fell asleep so many times, even during battles 😴

Does anyone know how you get down to the harbour area in the City on the desert map (forget the name). I literally spent over an hour last night trying to find a way down and i just couldnt. It seems there is a lift to the left but cant get to it.

We know what we like. It’s the main reason why I don’t put much weight behind a metacritic score - one man’s ‘mid’ eight is the best game you have played in months!

But would I pay £70 for Avowed? No chance. I wouldn’t pay £70 for any game. I don’t know why the gaming industry has allowed development to balloon to such an extent that these prices are required to recoup costs, but they need to get smarter (and I’m sure AI will help here and there in the long run).

I started getting twitchy when the prices went from the ~£30 range to the ~£40 range. 😂

Disclaimer - I am Scottish and tighter than a gnats chuff.

Finished it after taking my time in the last area, decided to stick with the voice in my head to the very end, expecting it to be the bad ending when it was actually a pretty good one?

I really enjoyed it, a solid 8/10 game, not in the pantheon of WRPGs with Divinity:Original Sin 2 or New Vegas but somewhere in the highest tier in my opinion. Maybe a good DLC could bring it even higher where it fell a bit short (more parkour and traversal, more build variety, more impactful equipment).

It also makes me really enthusiastic for The Outer Worlds 2 which quite obviously shares the same UI and engine as Avowed.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Just got this popup after downloading what I thought was a patch - 2GB. But I didn't buy any premium.. anyone else get this?

Still loving this area though, visually.

You got the premium upgrade for free?

Nice, let me check if my game has an update pending too, lol.

Thirdborn in Shatterscrap ?

I think that harbor area is just 'cosmetic', there's no way to go down there. Every quest giver etc is in the main area of the city you're in.

That's what it seems like.. I definitely didn't buy it, still on the 2 week $1 trial. I saw there was an update, assumed it was a patch and clicked download but when I booted up the game, I got that message. Seems like it's true, because I can change the outfits now. Kind of like this Obsidian one for Giatta. I definitely didn't pay anything. But it also looks like the premium is still purchasable for me in the GamePass shop.. so no idea what's going on.

I am absolutely loving this! It's one of the only games I've played in the last couple of years where I put in 3.5 hours and feel sad that I have to switch it off to go to bed. I don't get that much time to play but this game is addictive as hell.

I've said it before but the combat is so satisfying. I'm definitely getting reminders of Morrowind and Skyrim in parts with exploring the beach in the first section and coming across gangs, treasure etc. I half expect a mudcrab to leap out at me :messenger_beaming:

This game has surprised me in the best way possible. It's just a shame I can't put in as much time as I want as now I have other concerns (work, wife, children etc) "lollipop_disappointed:

Looks like there was a patch today, but nothing in the notes about getting the outfits for free - weird.

This one is funny though:

  • Ambassador Hylgard can no longer die from drowning in The Strangleroot while following the player, which was preventing him from appearing at the embassy in Paradis.

Crashes & Major Issues

  • Adjusted character settings so that unkillable characters will now respawn if they mysteriously die, preventing blocked quest progression.
Quests & Area Design

  • Players who killed
    Reveal hidden contents

    Reveal hidden contents
(Players with affected saves can now simply walk in and out of the meeting space to retrigger the conversation.)
  • Bounty Masters in Dawnshore, Shatterscarp, and Galawain’s Tusks now correctly allow players to turn in bounties, even if they have acquired more trophy items than expected.
  • Vemas now allows players to turn in Debt of Blood, even if they had already spoken to him upon returning.
  • The player will no longer become stuck with no objectives active during An Untimely End.
  • Fixed an issue where the player could become stuck in the environment near Dehengen's Cottage.
  • Enemy loot will no longer disappear if the player killed Ygwulf and the assassins in the Cistern, saved their game, and then reloaded that save.
  • Ambassador Hylgard can no longer die from drowning in The Strangleroot while following the player, which was preventing him from appearing at the embassy in Paradis.
  • The player will no longer be blocked from finishing Ancient Soil if Fior mes Iverno becomes inaccessible.
Systems & Gameplay Improvements

  • Godless chests and sarcophagi now have currency in their loot lists.
  • Upgrade materials (metal, wood, leather) are now more consistently available across stores in each region.
  • Upgrade materials now properly refresh when store stock updates.
  • Autosave frequency has been changed from 5 minutes to 10 minutes by default. (This can still be adjusted in player settings.)
  • Autosave slots increased from 3 to 5.
  • The ability Bleeding Cuts now applies Bleed Accumulation more reliably.
  • Logging into Xbox Network on Steam no longer resets the player's selected language setting.
  • Kai is now less likely to teleport inside a wall while using Leap of Daring.
  • Companions now assist in combat more reliably.
Visual & Art Fixes

  • Militia Guard patrolling Claviger's Landing now has the correct neck texture.
  • Adjusted health bar position for the enemy Putrid Skeleton Wizard.
  • Fixed jittering of player hair and armor when afflicted by Poison Accumulation.
  • Reduced opacity of a water fountain inside Ondra's Temple.
User Interface (UI) & Controls

  • Companion abilities bound to the Quick Slot menu no longer become undone after reloading a save.
  • Added new settings for controller users to adjust gamepad look acceleration strength and ramp-up time.
  • Corrected typos in the Encumbrance tutorial and on the Compiling Shaders screen (now correctly states “a few minutes” instead of “a few moments”).
Miscellaneous

  • Launching Avowedwith DirectX 11 is now disabled, as the game does not support it.
    • Some players have been using a DirectX 11 launch parameter as a workaround for various crashes, performance problems, or compatibility concerns. However, this can introduce additional problems that we cannot troubleshoot or resolve, including unexpected visual or performance issues.
    • If you're encountering startup crashes, we recommend updating your drivers, verifying your game files, or reaching out to our support team at support.obsidian.net for assistance.

Edit: Guess it was 22 hours ago, but I didn't get a prompt to update yesterday that I can remember.. so no idea what's going on for me.

At around 35 hours. I think I have done all of the side quests, though it seems I am missing one from the first area that bugged and never showed up.

I have been playing this game for days and only discovered yesterday that guns can have power attacks 😐😐

But I am dual wielding pistols now and it’s fucking amazing.

Also, economy is still busted. Also discovering there is a lack of lock picks in the game. Maybe the merchants inventory will refresh now with the patch.

In area 3 now.. happy it's back to being a bright area, the second area visually was really lacking to me.

Hitting a bit of a wall on the upgrade/leveling system... just taking ages for anything to progress.

Still having a ton of fun but I am just struggling to find enough upgrade materials now, and spending all my coin trying to buy some. I see what people's complaints are now, in the 1st 2 areas it all felt very balanced like "right when I'm feeling underpowered I get enough stuff/money to upgrade."

I just ignore the upgrading most of the time, then do as much as I can all at once randomly, but after the first act I wasn't changing equipment a whole lot.

Yeah I think I went all last night w/o dying so it's not like I'm struggling, just taking longer to kill stuff than I'd like.

edit: And yeah I do the same as you.. thing is I used to think "hey I'ma try to upgrade" and would often be able to upgrade multiple things multiple times, now I almost never have enough... so I'm specifically spending a lot more time thinking about materials.

Publishers should understand that a customer budget for video game entertaining is not growing and when you have competition, your game might draw the short stick and get purchased. I think is a higher chance to sell 2 copies at 40€, than 1 copy at 70€.

It's so true IMO. I'll eat up games all day at 15-40 range, but 50-60 I start to slow down massively, 70 or more would qualify as super rare. And it's likely I'd buy 3 games at 30, 2 at 40, where I might buy zero at 70+... So true.

I'm still early on but I really like it. Taking my time since exploring is so enjoyable. Not trying to clear out whole areas, but there is plenty of things to explore wherever my path takes me. I get feelings of some of the good parts of EverQuest and Morrowind while playing.

Something crazy I'm doing is telling Grok (AI) about what kind of build I'm going for and asking for suggestions on which equipment to pick or which abilities to get. Since my reading comprehension is not great if I come across some lore I might type it to the AI and ask to analyze it and tell me how it relates to the Avowed/Pillars universe and to explain it to me in a simple way. It's fun having an AI buddy to talk to about the game while playing. Yeah I can play games even more slowly than ever before.

Main complaint in regards to the controversy about it being woke would be that almost every captain of the guard type is a woman. I don't really care if there was even 50% but it's more like 90%. It's just weird.

Yeah, I noticed this too.

Overall the game has a weird vibe. It feels like the world is a big mismatch of different things and it's missing personality and characteristics. Then randomly there are bunch of people with an Italian accent.

That's just the accent they've given to Vailians in Pillars of Eternity prior to this game, which some areas have more of. It's kind of like a romance language mashup.

I mean nice thing about PC gaming in particular is the deep sales over time. I rarely buy games at launch, not because I'm stingy, but because I realized a long time ago I shouldn't buy a game unless I'm legit wanting to play it that day/weekend lol

In the end for me I paid $70 + tax for Avowed and already got a ton of entertainment out of it. Like 30 hours so far, it's cheap!

There are deep sales on consoles too. I mean I picked up Hogwarts Legacy for 26 bucks canadian (I’m guessing that’s under 20 US dollars) this past Xmas (and some other games that were at least 20 bucks under their normal price). I always wait for sales (or for the game to come to gamepass).

The lighting in this game is something else. I don't think I've seen such a coherent lighting from day to night, indirect lighting and with little to no artifacts. Performs good too. Probably the most impressive I have seen with UE5 lighting to date. The desert make it so high contrast during the day between where the sun hits and the shade. I can't imagine what this could have been with proper HDR.

Love the 3rd area so far. Whomever designed this world with the parkour and esthetic design of it all at Obsidian needs a raise. Incredible job.

The graphics are magnificent. I've been playing in my 4090 at 4k with DLAA at max settings and the game at times is absolutely beautiful. The guys did a good job with the graphics. Its a shame that there is no so much interactivity with the world tho

Slightly off topic, but would love to see Obsidian do a remake/upgrade of Morrowind.
The engine would clearly handle the more atmospheric areas.

Managed to get the "positive" ending at the end of the 2nd area. Considering the issue in the cave was solved covertly, every fool seems to know that I did it.

Should make future interactions with the Steel Garrote interesting...

Played a bit last night and those opening cutscenes were beautiful. I do think the character creator is rather ugly and wasn't drawn in too much from the first few encounters. Excited to see if this sinks it's teeth in this weekend.

Played a few hours this week--just because it's Obsidian, on GP, and people are talking about it. And it's the Oblivion* sequel we never got? With a little of the old BioWare personality thrown in? Why was I not told about this earlier?

Absolutely looking forward to putting in more time with this.

*I can't quite make up my mind if it's more like Morrowind or Oblivion, but resembling either one is aces in my book.

This is an UE5 game, the upcoming (rumored) Oblivion remake/remaster is also UE5, wonder if it's gonna be as visually interesting as this game is.
