Dragon Age: Veilguard releases with over 70k concurrent players on Steam and 'Mixed Reviews'

It'll probably peak over 100k. It's been 10 years. I wonder the budget came out to be. Last Epoch hit 260k peak concurrent though Diablo-style games have been hot the past decade

50k is a great number right off the bat.

Projects to probably peaking around 100k (generally the peak after a new game release is the first Sunday afternoon after it comes out).
Not always. If word of mouth isn't good or the game has technical issues (which seems this one has despite what DF claimed), the game can just drop right off.

I'm playing the game and it runs extraordinarily well so far. Where are we seeing technical issues?

I’m going to say 70k peak today and 100K all time peak on Sunday.

Some other comparisons
Starfield 330K
Fallout 4 470K
Baldur’s Gate 3 875K
Divinity Original Sin 2 93K
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 96K
Cyberpunk 2077 1M
50k to 100k peak ccp would be great for much lower and smaller budget games like Granblu Fantasy Relink, Stellar Blade, Wukong etc.

For Veil guard with the huge focus, work, and budget it'll be

100k peak steam ccp = flop

200k peak steam ccp = below expectation.

400k peak steam ccp = success

600k peak steam ccp = above expectation

800k peak steam ccp = mega successful

1 million peak steam ccp = It's Veilguarding Time

I think it'll definitely reach above 100k with the rate things are going. Maybe to the 200k concurrent peak mark at least would be my guess.

For a bit of context, so far this is doing numbers comparable to Owlcat's Wrath of the Righteous and Rogue Trader.
And these were games made by a small Russian studio with a fraction of the budget they spent on Veilguard (or any other Dragon Age title, really).

EDIT- Basically, it's (probably) not going to "lose money" on the long run, but it's not going to turn into a runaway hit like BG3 or Elden Ring, either.
Steam is not the only storefront out there though.

This game is also on Xbox and PS storefronts, who knows how many players are playing the game rn over there?

Also not everyone plays their new game day 1.

I'm gonna keep posting this until everyone who says this is good, gets a grip.

Starfield - 250.000
BG3 - 875.000
Cyberpunk 2077 - 1,054,388

  1. The user count hasn't peaked yet and will probably peak at ~2x of where it's at now
  2. A total of 159 games have reached over 100k concurrent players since the inception of Steamdb; the vast majority of them being multiplayer games. Single player games reaching these huge concurrent numbers on Steam is pretty rare.

It's currently 8th on Playstation's "Top 10 Games" in US but the ones above it are Sports Games/Cod/Fortnite.

So the modern audience does exist. Oh well, guess It's time we just accept that the bat-shit insane retards have took over and a blue-haired transgender Solid Snake lecturing Psycho Mantis on pronouns and abortion rights in a MGS1 remake is an inevitability. You will like it and you will you love it.

.... or maybe the majority of people don't live on the internet fighting these fake "culture wars" and really don't give a shit or even notice if a game gives you the option to choose pronouns or if there's a couple lines that push for inclusivity.

This is Hogwarts Legacy all over again but on the other side of the spectrum. The vast majority of normal people don't give a fuck. People just want to play games they think look fun.

This game wishes it could sniff Hogwart's Legacy 527,000 peak CCU and sales.

I think you’re setting the bar way, way too high. Most AAA games on Steam don’t come close to 400K CCU.

And this is on a Thursday. I imagine a lot of more players will log in on the weekend.

"Mixed reviews", c'mon now. Less than 30 reviews.

I'm glad that Bioware will survive so they can listen to criticism and fix them for their next game.

They would be fools to ignore (valid) criticism.

Whos expectations ?? EA's after 7 years of dev?

Not sure what you're trying to prove by sharing the 7th, 12th, and 33rd highest concurrently played games of all-time on Steam. All games with PC centric fanbases as well. Of course Dragon Age was never going to reach numbers anywhere near those and no one would've ever predicted anything near that, "woke" or not.

You're insane lol. There's been a total of 26 games in the history of Steamdb that have peaked at over 400k and like 20 of them are multiplayer games.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Whose expectations? Why is everyone being so vague about this?

You guys can simply refer to the GAF thread. A lot more users expecting it to to sub 20k, 10k, 5k etc with only a few users (accurately) guessing 50k or above.

So far as it seems as I guessed in the other thread, though it might get past the 100k mark during the weekend.
People who though this was going to be a massive bomb were delusional.

It's a well known IP, it got good reviews and it's benefiting from a pretty barren landscape of AAA releases for the moment (aside from COD), specially now that AC and Kindom Come got delayed.
it's going to be moderate success but no in the same league as something like Baldur's Gate 3 or Cyberpunk.

Steam is not the only storefront out there though.
It's overwhelmingly the relevant one if one wants to gauge the popularity of a game on PC.
And given that "the other stores" exist for other games as well, it makes no sense to worry about making excuses.
You have Steam numbers for both, you can make reasonable approximations on how well they are performing comparatively to each other.

Well, sadly it looks like the game is selling well. I knew the IP would carry some sales but it seems like it's gonna be a success.

I don't think it's gonna have legs but it's gonna be one of those "see woke is not broke" talking points anytime a newer game comes out with bad optics.
For fuck's sake. That's a piss take in my opinion. But hey, everyone is allowed to their opinion.

"Sadly is sells well"?
It's a huge single player game, no extra shitty launcher needed etc.. I think it's great that this game sells well!
So it has that goofy artstyle and some trans folks was part of the dev team.. so what?

There's plenty of other games if this is not your cup of tea, but wanting it to fail because of the "wokeness" seems quite silly.

I couldn't give two fucks about lots of games, but it's PLENTY of games for everyone. And i'm very happy everytime a single player game does well.
And that fuckin word "woke", man..
Most useless word and stupid word. Makes it feel like the world evolves around that silly, hollow shit.

This isn't most AAA games though. This is a BioWare/Dragon Age game.

The bar should be high.
Sure, but 400K if I’m not mistaken is like top 30 all time. Without F2P, it’s higher. I don’t think it needs to peak that high to be a success.

I’ll check the Steam Charts record later, but 400K is a smashing success, not just a decent or good one.

For me, its just that this new game is wearing the corpse of Dragon Age Origins. If Bioware wanted to make a new IP and have it be something different and new, cool. Let'er rip. But instead, Bioware took an established IP with a decidedly different vibe and tone, killed it, gutted it, and threw it on a game that is substantially different from what made the original IP great.

Thats my issue.

Let me explain to you the issue here:
Dragon Age isn't supposed to be the "plucky underdog" made on shoestring budget.
Since 2009 the series is considered a household name in the RPG genre.

In fact, barely a year ago, before August 2023, anyone suggesting that Larian was going to pulverize the "next Dragon Age" in sales would have been laughed out of the door (but we now know how that turned out).

Dragon Age had ALL the potential to pull similar numbers. Not only the previous ones were successful, but the PC market has grown significantly year after year since their releases.

The only reason this is doing so-so is because the word of mouth has been awful for the past few months.
It's still BIG enough as a serie to pull decent numbers, but it's not turning into the runaway hit it could have been in a better timeline, when they would have been able to come out with something that genuinely appealed to most.

No no no.

Hohenheim is right. The game sold well so your only allowed to say positive things, it's silly to have any opinion one way or another.

Only bad people who do bad things think that a bad product selling well isn't necessarily a good thing.

Join me in penance and serve yourself 10 lashes. For tis truly an outrageous thing. Probably the craziest thing anyone's ever sad on gaf actually.

🤣
