Fighting Games Weekly | March 3-9 | Edition Edition

I was talking to Circ, our resident Potemkin dude and general grumpy guy, about it. He says that ICBM looks like it has no redeeming quality. On the flip side, things look a lot more hopeful than at the loketest. People were comparing him to CT Tager.

Edit: Also, if you're around, I hear you know some Injustice things. I'm learning Batgirl and this girl is nutty. I have the cross up DP set up down, but I wanna know how things like that work so I can start coming up with something more clever. You know what's up with things like that?

Do you mean weird crossup stuff in the corner?

Edit: Yeah I wish Injustice's entire audiovisual work wasn't ass, I know that's a significant part of why some people don't want to play it. By contrast, I know people who play Marvel 3 mostly because they love how it looks and sounds. And they're right, imo it's the prettiest fighting game of the modern era.

The only stiff thing in tekken is just walking. Watching jin walk forward is like watching a little kid tip toe across the street.

Yeah, a lot of characters have bad walks. Jinpachi looks so silly walking/crouch-walking but that's probably because of his stance.

I get a bit of uncanny valley vibe from VF, like you're looking at marionettes fighting instead of people.

I have a similar problem with Skullgirls, where it doesn't look like a fight between two characters, but instead a fight between two drawings of characters. Like you're watching a flipbook.

I think GGXrd might edge it out, though.

I call it "The Tekken Effect".

I hate the way the characters jump in VF, it looks really weird.

Parallax knows what's up. I think for Skullgirls at least, it's intentional.

Tekken gives me those marionette vibes at times when there is dashing and Z-axis movement simultaneously, but generally the animation is very smooth and sleek.

So landlord tells me to find a place within 60 days

I find a really good place better than my current place for the same price first try within 3 days of them telling me that.

I tell landlord, they get mad saying I'm a scumbag for leaving so early after they were nice enough to give me a 60 day warning.

WHAT THE FUCK? LOL
Naw fuck them!
Congrats on finding a new place so soon Q, I hope this one works out better for you.

Yeah, that and the midscreen stuff. With Batgirl specifically, if you hit them with bolo, whiff 1 then dash twice and do DP, you'll cross up. MB it and get a full combo. It's super lenient and I want to know why it works so I can make more things like it. I know it has something to do with the shake out animation and hitboxes moving forward, but that's it. P.S. If you want to see it watch Sonic Foxx from WB, that's where I stole it from.

AE has some great walking animations. Makoto, Fei, Vega come to mind, but there are many more.

I personally always loved Soul Calibur animations. Now that I think about it, it's probably my favorite 3d fighter in that aspect.

Yeah, the animation work in Soul Calibur is great. I started casually playing 5 a month or two ago after not playing a Soul Calibur game for a long while and the fluidity of the animations stuck out a lot especially with characters like Maxi and Xianghua.

ASW animation is actually really good for fighting game players. Casuals might find it bad though I guess. :p
I love the characterization ASW shows in their animation, but not the fluidity. It feels really hard to know when stuff ends in that game.

One thing I like about Marvel - and this goes back to the discussion about how much stuff you need to memorize for a game - is that you don't need to know when something is safe or not safe. For the most part, everything is safe, and you just pushblock. There's a list of exceptions to learn, and you are good. Too many fighters make you memorize a lot of frame data, and BlazBlue always frustrates me because it is hard to know when it is okay to do stuff unless you look it up. Part of that is the animations; it feels like some attacks should be "the end" of a blockstring, and they really aren't.

TLDR: more games should eliminate blockstrings or add a mechanism similar to pushblocking.

Also, Soul Calibur does have some cool animations. Nightmare in particular.

Q, why is your landlord kicking you out?

Arc should have had a stipulation attached to their XRD cabs that the recipient needed to own an HD capture, because as of right now nobody has made the game look flattering.

Hell they should have bundled the hd capture with it.

ut?

Ya, I honestly don't even know whats safe or not. Ya, a blocked dp is unsafe, that is easy to see, but other moves? They all look +2 on block, but they are unsafe. Its the hardest thing for me to deal with.

The original is still my favorite looking 3D fighter. Damned witchcraft on the Dreamcast is what it is. Still love looking at it in 2014 (VGA output).

Q, why is your landlord kicking you out?

They are moving out and want to rent the whole house out

Edit: Not to mention I found out when their mother came by to visit *I'm on good terms with her* That my landlord was planning this out for 6 months now and I barely heard anything about it 3 days ago.

SC2 Maxi gets my vote for the most well-animated character in any fighting game ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r73sM7_evQ

It'd be nice if all that fancy looping was actually viable in real matches though. :p

I always felt he flowed better in SC1. Not really animation wise, but he just felt so much more mashable in SC1 and his moves just went from one into another. I didn't main Maxi in SC2 so I can't really put my finger on what they changed to get it feeling different.

I'm pretty sure Xrd is using Sega Ringedge 2 cabs. If so, they've been around for a while for games like GGAC+R and UNIB, and there has already been HD captures for games like UNIB. I doubt arcade owners don't have HD uploading capabilities. It's probably because most arcades use free Nico accounts and those have uploading restrictions.

Mmm, or maybe it's both. That would explain the quality of some Twitch streams or places that upload to Youtube like Gamechariot.

I wonder how cab recordings work. Latif was able to get HD cab recordings of his games in Japanese arcades and there are plenty of combo videos from arcade-only games by regular players. Maybe they can ask arcade owners to record their matches or something.

This is all speculation though. I've never been to a Japanese arcade so I don't know what I'm talking about lol. :V

Guess my bro wants to get Xrd for ps4, looks like I'll be playing that with some of y'all!
