MLG chases whatever is popular at the moment. They used to have Melee several years ago I don't know why they dropped it.

It was dropped for myriad reasons. It wasn't an easy decision and MLG even supported the community for quite some time after they dropped the games from their main circuit. MLG is not the devil despite what a lot of childish idiots in the FGC want to desperately believe. The decision to drop Smash was not arbitrary.

I haven't seen anyone say they're evil. The criticism I've seen is that their events are so sterilized and there's no hype.

I don't know much about the Smash community other than what was shown in the documentary which implied that the scene cratered after they dropped Smash.

something interesting that a buddy posted up on srk about commentary for marvel in response to james chen's tweet on learning marvel to commentate it better:

he brings up a lot of points i personally agree with and was wondering what ya'lls take on this is

Having too many things to do commentary on. I don't think that problem is unique to Marvel at all as a fighting game and he's using it as a scapegoat to hear "you hate to see this type of thing happen" and "ooh" ad nauseum. His second point contracts the first. Either marvel is filled with situations that speak for itself, which allows for commentators to further elaborate, or it's filled with fast paced nuanced situations that are hard to illustrate in a single instance. Which is it?

I would rather hear a well written post on why two color commentators is preferable. Would it have been better if Genesis and Rynge were kicked off and we put Tasty Steve.... and a clone of Tasty Steve to double up on memes?

Two "hype" commentators for Marvel doesn't end up working except in the case of Yipes/Matrix (and even then both give some insightful stuff in between the "oohs"). Remember when Tasty Steve and Yipes did Marvel? It wasn't good.

One insightful and one hype commentator is the way to go... always. It's why Magus and Yipes has worked so well at EVO for two years straight. The dream team is Ryan Hunter and Yipes though... that guy takes insightful Marvel to a new level.

And I don't get the hate for insightful Marvel commentary. Not everyone is a brain dead Marvel minion looking for their daily fix of salt and hype. There's a ton of stuff that gets over looked in a match that is extremely high level or specific that deserves to get mentioned. At least that's something which Genesis does well like how he was calling out the specific escapes for the Firebrand set up and not chalking it up to "oh FChamp got out, I guess he got lucky".

MLG had King of Fighters and MK9. One of which has a total of 10 players in North America and the other, while a decent sized community, was nowhere near popular.

They're a business, they have to pick up games that can generate them some revenue. The only people that bring up that complaint is people salty about how Halo got demoted from flagship for Starcraft, or how Halo got replaced by CoD.

Oh and the Melee "stream" was a live feed update so they dropped it. Why bother having a game if you can't stream it? No one cares since no one can watch.

Well, the hype thing is absolute nonsense. In regards to Smash in particular. Watch the documentary you referenced again. Melee consistently brought the house down when it was on the circuit. Even the Halo 2 kids were constantly talking about the game in articles. I'm pretty sure there's even a scene in the doc where you can barely hear Wife commentating because the venue is so loud.

"Cratered"? Scene did no such thing. The Melee scene suffered for an interval for a bit due to the release of Brawl but that was about it. MLG had its negative effects in regards to where people wanted to see the game take the community. but it never did anything close to "cratering" it after company cut them loose.

Who's everyone looking forward to trying out in GGXrd?

I guess my top 3 would be;

1. Ramlethal/Ramletherl Valentine

Practically guaranteed for the console release. I like everything about her design and from the little footage I've seen she seems like a rushdown character that uses her balloon/swords for pressure/oki (maybe?) and some zoning. I have no doubt she will be nerfed in playable status as boss characters normally are but I've always chosen characters based on how much I like them first before anything else so I don't think that will be an issue.

2. Potemkin

Potemkin looks pretty fun as a grappler. Usually I gravitate away from them but he looks really fun to play (can combo into his grabs!). I also like when he says "HEAT EXTEND" during that one hand anti air grab move.

3. Ky Kiske

I love everything about Ky's design here. Just his looks and voice alone tell me that he's the idealist swordsman type and I think it's pulled off really well here. Not to mention that he has my favourite theme so far in the game. I don't know who his VA is but I love his voice. Every one of his battle lines sounds like they have just the right amount of timbre. I haven't seen it used too often but I love when Ky players make use of his "RIDE THE LIGHTNING" super. His playstyle seems to be fairly straightforward but I've seen some interesting use of his tools in arcade footage.

Millia, will play until I get comfy, or get cts flareups. That new blooming rose super looks super OP.

Really want to try Ramlethal, and will keep I-no on secondary.

Just got bopped by Cloud805 online but I was configuring my stream so I don't have the video, I thought it was capturing it too. :(

I also had my buttons wrong because I was playing on pad before. My marvel rating is in epic fail territory.

Melee's best year before 2013 was 2007, the year after it was technically "dropped" from MLG (who still ran some grassroots tournaments)
2008-early 2009 was where it nearly died off

Edit: Funny thing about Brawl at MLG was that it happened to be in a year with nothing else but a dying Halo 3 and....Tekken I think (something with awful entrants), making it the most hype somehow.
bet you never heard the words "Brawl" and "hype" in the same sentence before did you

definitely going back to millia in Xrd. dat graceful movement tickles my fancy

Unlike Blazblue i feel guilty lets me just try characters and press buttons with out me being particularly proficient with them or having to study a breadth of tutorials. I'll probably just try out the whole casts (except potemkim)

Who's everyone looking forward to trying out in GGXrd?
Ky's number 1 for me. He's been one of my mains (along with Dizzy). There's too many I want to try out. Next is Venom because Venom's awesome. 3rd, I dunno. I would've said Valentine before I saw what her boss version looked like. Wasn't expecting giant swords. I really want to learn them all down the road.

Who's everyone looking forward to trying out in GGXrd?

I-No, if the reports about how she's easier to use are accurate. I've always wanted to play with her, but the timing on her combos and tricks are too strict for me.

I'm also looking forward to seeing what Bedman's all about. I like characters with big, solid hitboxes, and Bedman seems to fit that niche quite well.

And if any other characters make it in before the home port, I'll probably give them a shot as well.

Super stoked the only friend I know that plays fighting games plays Faust in GG because he's one of the only ones I can dustloop in +r.

Who's everyone looking forward to trying out in GGXrd?

Probably still gonna mainly roll with Sol/Potemkin/I-No like I do in AC+/+R. I-No's a strange case where she's way too hard for me to use seriously, but for just basic matches with friends, she's fun to mess around with. Since it seems they're making her a little easier to approach now, that only gets me more hyped. Also Sol having a divekick now and Potemkin looking like Panzerfaust are both hype too

Google translate gives me "resume"? I assume it means best wishes moving forward?

I wouldn't want that.
Not only because the EC seems to constantly suffer a brain-drain when it comes to top players, but that WC starts getting the idea that they can simply take any top talent from anywhere without building their own.

As much as I don't like top EC talent moving to the WC, I don't think there's any "taking" per se. If a person feels their life is going to be bettered by relocating, then I wish them the best.

If it was so hype why did they drop it? Did people stop going to their events- if so why? I think MLG is a great organization but at the end of the day they have their own self interests and aren't the most reliable/supportive actors when it comes to the FG scene.

It's going to be a never ending cycle until somebody breaks it. West Coast just has more opportunities and you can't fault anybody for wanting to live a better life. East Coast has it's benefits but it's a brutal place and all about survival of the fittest.
