Videogames are good. This generation has been great. Uh... people should look a little harder for games they like (even going as far getting into new genres), spend less time worshiping the ones that they do, and spend a lot less time looking at videogame news/drama. There, amicable.

I don't find this insulting. But maybe you thought the people in here would because half the time the are like OMG OMG OBS OR OMG OMG HE SAID AND OMGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH shit :lol

I'm in full agreement. I loved this past gen, never has there been more diversity in games for people to pick and choose what they like from, how they want to play those games and on what platform. Never. That's why this past gen was amazing, along with how any Average Joe can take his awesome idea and find a way to get it out to people and sustain himself. Those alone make me feel it isn't even close to the worst gen, possibly even the best.

I also think you have to really try hard not to find a game that suits your interests in this past gen.

I like to refer to my inability to enjoy new things as "good taste". The NES era was the best era because it objectively had the best games and certainly not because I was a stupid, easily impressed child at the time.

So you do actually think games will get better? I actually didn't think so until I started veering off into indie territory. I don't know if you saw my list, but both Guacamelee and The Swapper can be had for a dollar or less on the indie bundle. Both those were fantastic. I'd definitely recommend them.

Swapper was great.

I just wish the puzzles were a little more difficult. I only had a trouble on a few of them.
Even the bad games this gen were fun. Bullet Witch, RE6, Babysitting Mama. Not everything has to be revolutionary to be good entertainment value.
whoa, calm down there.

Bulletwitch was ass. There was nothing entertaining about that game, even the box art looked like shit.

I don't know how to express my feelings on jaded gamers without insulting everyone in this thread (except ViewtifulJC, I think).

Include me in that list. I'm still in this hobby finding more new things to try and generally excited for where things are going (especially as more and more people start making games through indie initiatives). Sure there are some practices and things I'd love to see change but overall, it's still on the up and up. Considering I would also like to pursue a career in game design/development, I'd have to be somewhat optimistic about the hobby. :p

My only real problem is that I'm losing more time/money for the hobby to responsibilities and becoming more stable in life.

IMO of course.

I like what I like, and I play what I like. The only way other people come into the picture here is helping me find things that I would like. (...and multiplayer.)

Granted, I'm also in the situation where Tetris and fighting games dominate 90% of my gaming time.

this is all true

ps3/360/wii/ds/psp is still the worst gen ever doe. my top 10 list that I posted before are 10 games I absolutely LOVE and could play forever, over and over and not get tired of them... but my top 10 from PS2/GC/Xbox or N64/Saturn/PS1 or SNES/Genesis kinda blows it out of the water ;)

Nope the Atari generation exist as far as home systems are concerned. That's the worst.

I don't count pre-crash :p

I thought this gen was great as well. alot of fun games. Same as last gen.

There's always game that don't click with you, doesn't mean they are bad, or shit.

This, so hard.

I haven't regularly played a fighting game in at least half a year. I don't think I deserve to make these threads. I don't play more than a hour of video games a week, and that's being generous because most weeks it's none.

N64? Mace: The Dark Age was that good?

Oh sorry I thought that was Fighters Destiny. Whoops.

I also think you have to really try hard not to find a game that suits your interests in this past gen.

The percentage of people that go to Best Buy and get whatever new big budget game is available is probably higher than you think. I believe a lot of people stop playing videogames because they don't know what to buy, so they get the crap a 16 year old store clerk tells them to get. Then they "lose interest" for the next generation.

The trend toward putting story over gameplay and excessive player handholding are all off putting, to be sure, but you can still find games that aren't afflicted by such brain damage.

Games are games. They aren't movies.

Regarding last gen and modern games in general, I don't think the gen was bad, but it was disappointing. Mainly because more and more focus was put onto making interactive movies.

My biggest issue with modern games, is that I feel like there's so much more that games could be doing right now and they just aren't taking advantage. The big studios have to make mainstream garbage to sell, and the smaller devs, while talented, don't have the resources.

For sure, but I expect a lot more for someone posting on an enthusiast internet forum, especially one where you have competing opinions and exposure to indies unlike any other other venue of communication about video games. I guess there really isn't any way to prevent jadedness if the person just chooses to look at things from that perspective though.

Yeah I'm a sucker for atmospheric games. I wish music was more of a component these days.

Oh yeah I guess if you're talking about someone that doesn't like to be happy, then yeah.

Or maybe is happy... to not be happy? I don't know.

Oh hey do you guys want to talk about NeoGeo Battle Colisseum?

I literally have the exact opposite situation. All of the games I play are time sinks with large room for growth currently. Super Smash Bros: Project M has been my go to for the better part of the last 5 months of gaming on the console side while Pokemon X doesn't leave my 3DS when I step out of the house. While I love the fuck out of both games, I've definitely neglected a shit load of current stuff (ALBW, finishing TW101 for reals, Bravely Default, Strider on PS4) just because I want to grind something out in Smash or finish IV breeding some Pokes for a new team.

The trend toward putting story over gameplay and excessive player hand holding are all off putting, to be sure, but you can still find games that aren't afflicted by such brain damage.

+1, but I must say I'm cool with the existence of both, especially since you don't have to look too far for either depending on your preferences.

I realized a little while ago that 90-95% of my gaming time is spent on mobile now. Which was kind of sad when I thought about it

Need to stream more Puyo Puyo Tetris at some point; I havent touched that game in a while.

Step 2: Learn to Jump C
Step 3: Learn to Hop C
Step 4: Learn to Superjump C

VLR, Persona 4 Golden, Mirror Edge, TLoU, Catherine were my top games that I can think of. VLR and P4G by a large margin (never played p4 back when it was on the ps2).
As I said before, as I gotten older I careless about gameplay, and care more about story, themes, and character development. That not to say gameplay is important, its important enough that the game should run smoothly and be enjoyable.
Game I thought was stupid hyped and not even that great (dare I say mediocre) is walking dead. Played that shit up to the last chapter and turned off the game.

I felt that this gen had a lot of solid games like tomb raider, deus ex, batman, and etc. But nothing that capture me like FFT, BoF3, DMC1, KOF98 and such. Hell I'm playing mostly older DS games at the moment. 999, ace attorney and radiant historia were fun.

Defining games for me personally:

Multiplayer: TTT2 (around 1000 hours), T6 (probably around 500 hours), SSBB (1000+ hours), vanilla MvC3 (estimated 200 hours).

Singleplayer: Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 2, Twilight Princess

I still have to finish Red Steel 2, Xenoblade, and The Last of Us. Maybe one of those may become a defining experience as well.

While I don't think this generation was bad like some "gamers", it was a definite step down from the previous generation.

Like if you compare top 10 this gen to last gen its not even fucking close. People like to bring up the rise of indies this gen but they forgot the huge fall of the mid tier games. So this gen is basically two extremes where as last gen games were more evened out in terms of scale.

LMAO @ Kimo's post, dude needs to take a chill pill. A perfect case of taking people and their hobbies too seriously. Honestly skipping out on games because of hype is reaching hipster level of mentality... no offense. I mean where the hell would I be if I didn't buy into the DMC1 hype.... I wouldn't be on this forum!

I wish I knew what the greatest fighting game of all time was

What's the top 10 from 2 gens ago?
Cause I definitely don't feel that way at all.
There are tons of mid tier games if you had a Wii/DS/PSP.

just listing some obvious ones from 5th gen:
Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid, Majora's Mask, Tekken 3 (cause this is FGC-GAF), Gran Turismo, Perfect Dark, Final Fantasy Tactics (or VIII, or IX)

speaking of which, hey remember when Nintendo had the FPS audience?
lol

edit: wait are you talking about PS1/N64 or PS2/Xbox/GC generation

7. Resident Evil 4
8. Clover Games in general

no one gives a damn about the middle-tier developers. not the consumer base, not the enthusiast press. not even the hardcore. fighting games, insomniac, krome studios, Techland--most people would pass it off as shovelware before even giving it a serious look. thank god for shit like spec ops

We talking last last gen?

1) Timesplitters: FP
2) Jet Set Radio Future
3) Kingdom Hearts II
4) Riddick
5) Musashiden II
6) SSX Tricky
7) THUG 2
8) Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
9) Dark Cloud 2
10) Brute Force

always and forever my top ten

Hey man at least I didn't write an essay putting nerd culture on blast... on a fucking nerd hobby forum.

Yeah Snake Eater, Ico, SoTC, MGS2, FFX, Persona 4 (lol?), DMC 1 and 3, RE4, and etc are all great games that left great impressions. Tomb Raider was a good game but I forgot about it like a week after I beat it.

I don't usually buy into hype nor do I hype games unless I really think its great (VLR). I just feel the older games left a stronger impression then ps3/360 gen games. Brave Fencer Musashi? Hellll yeahhhh

and all this applies to indies even more, so what's your point

edit: my top 5, 6th gen (alphabetical order again):
Final Fantasy X
Halo 1
Okami
Resident Evil 4
Super Smash Bros Melee

If we're talking Diablo 3, fine.

Diablo 2? The fuck outta heeeeeeeeeeeeere

yeah Diablo III was ass, thank god for Torchlight II

and all this applies to indies even more, so what's your point

there's more spotlight being thrown onto indies more than the middle man, especially in this gen when their presence is much higher.

You think /anyone/ gives a damn about people like Yager? Nordic? Vigil before they went under? Yakuza Team? Insomniac? Techland? If Volition didn't make it's break with Saints Row they'd still be known as the RF team? hell no, man no one even acknowledges Crytek
