I guess this another social test, or behavior thing (kimo, guide me here, haha).
When you see somebody else's list of something, their top 5 something, something, is your first instinct to:
1. Shit on it and dismiss it?
2. Have this urge to point out why it is all wrong and why yours is better?
3. Show genuine interest on their point of view and want to know why they feel that way?
I am sorry about that then, it definitely was not supposed to be all that serious either although with the internet you have to be more careful with your words.I actually was insulted by that. That's why I came back with the UMVC3 remark. My apologies as well.
Respeck

What about games in the same genre?None of the above. I don't like the idea of hierarchical list in regards to general game discussions at all. It invites the petty antagonism for distinctions I that feel isn't even important. Games within a series? Sure. Tiering that makes sense. Having DMC1 over DMC 2 shows what you value in action game design.
Who cares if you liked Bioshock Infinite more than MGS: Reveangance?
A bit of a random question, but since I'm going to be doing my final paper on arcade cabinets and the FGC but I need a book on arcades or arcade cabinets, if anyone knows a good one.

Like if it was DmC vs MGR or a general list of fighting games?

I remember hearing about this book by Japanese Arcades. This is written by someone who works for Kotaku.

so fr is next week? any predictions? are there any internationals coming out? Assuming some koreans for tekken?
Yea and it's not like MGR/TloU are the absolute same type of game where you can even make direct comparisons.
I didn't participate in the GAF GOTY awards BTW.
Alright alright alright... back to fighting games.
Eventhubs took a poll asking if people would want Edition select for tournament standard:
http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2014/...4s-edition-select-become-tournament-standard/
Most people are against it. I would put myself in the middle. I would be fine with either decision but I would rather that people first try out Ultra version and then go to Edition select.

Q, do you have any good Eddie play from Xrd?
Decapre!so fr is next week? any predictions? are there any internationals coming out? Assuming some koreans for tekken?
I believe in LK without the Joose.

I'd have appreciated ASB more if it wasn't 30 FPS. Didn't have much fun playing it with friends a few weeks ago, despite really wanting to like it.
I posted in this thread without elaborating my choices so I will use this opportunity to do so (this thread was made pre-MVC3 so some choices have changed):In genres works too. I just hate seeing the very general stuff. GAF "Game of the Year" threads and "Game of the Generation" threads are the kind of stuff that turn me off.
*edit*
I will say though, that I personally, generally stay away from list discussions that aren't under the pretext of being purely subjective. Like if I say; "Make a list of your top 5 favorite fighting game characters all-time",
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=419105
nobody's going to antagonize your list without looking like an asshole. The more general your list is, the more antagonism it seems to invite. Tiers just have a way with people - even without numbers.
Awesome, I'll check this out, thanks! Is there an ebook version by any chance? Can't exactly wait to get it in the mail since I need to get this ready for a presentation on either Monday or Wednesday.
I want to share what I am listening to, haha.

I don't think so.
You think it's bad with videogames? You should see the number of shills on any given political site. It's to the point where I wonder if we're going to hit some critical mass where the only people posting are paid shills for one company or another.Another thing that sort of got way too prevalent in this generation was planted shills or PR folk masquerading as normal gamers. Everyone knew these people always existed but this gen it reached critical mass. You always have to be extra careful about what you read and whether something is genuine.

What if it's not even hierarchical? Like these are my favorites of the year, no particular order.
I do agree to an extent listing things 1-5 or whatever leads to having to justify things and that can get petty.
Me personally, I like seeing people lists on what they like. It gives me a window into their tastes, even if I don't agree with them.
People still get petty though when discussing singular things, as everybody still brings in whatever baggage points (their bias, their other favorite games) into a discussion when discussing a game, which in alot of cases I wish was in a vacuum (I understand it it shouldn't be that way alot of times).
Like DmC, I like it as a singular experience, but it's own discussion merits get bogged down when bringing in the older games and the comparisons. Which I understand is going to happen, but it turns me off to some degree personally. Like others have said, it gets petty and unreasonable sometimes.
Bioshock Infinite was the game that taught me to stay away from media PR and forum discussion regarding certain experiences. I liked the story because I'm a wannabe physics nut but I couldn't stand anything else about that game, and impressions I read set my expectations very high.
The Mass Effect 3 situation was absolutely unreal in terms of media attacking gamers. The only thing I can think of that has come close to that level of ridiculousness was Arthur Gies' tirade. The game that finally just made me give no fucks about the media was Mass Effect 3. The game itself was garbage, the ending was even worse. The way the media attacked gamers while praising that game just confirmed that these are nothing more than PR companies.
I've visited all those sites a combined total of once in two years. It was from that link someone posted earlier with the Justin Wong interview.
I wish people would stop giving those sites hits. just let them die out already. there's better coverage from people on YouTube so they serve no purpose anymore.
Good on you. I learned this by buying into the hype of the original BioShock. The hype behind infinite was stupid high and guess what...Despite gafs frothing at the mouth and extolling all the virtues of the games 'social commentary', environment and gameplay, no one is singing praises anymore. The honey moon is over and the consensus is we got burned. Not me though I had no expectations. I'm cynical by nature now I suppose. In turn I enjoyed it for what infinite for what it was truly worth, a weekend redboxBioshock Infinite was the game that taught me to stay away from media PR and forum discussion regarding certain experiences. There might be another Fishstix announcement.so fr is next week? any predictions? are there any internationals coming out? Assuming some koreans for tekken?
how can someone put so much hours in a game like 3s and still hate it.3rd Strike dawg
.......I hate 3S so fucking much, yet put 1000's of hours into it.
Media attacked the DMC fanbase as well during the whole pre-release DmC era (and some attacked post release as well):

You'd be surprised the amount of players that dont like 3s but play it anyways. Kuroda is the opposite in that he loves 3 and dislikes 4(yet he's really good anyways).how can someone put so much hours in a game like 3s and still hate it.
3s has one of the best fighting game engines of all time. and you will realize this/find the intricacies of why that is after playing it for so long.
...you must suck in 3s!
either that. or you haven't experienced competitve 3s on a versus cabinet.
looking at the last couple pages...slow news week in neogaf fgc sucks massive balls.
sf4 ultra. gg xrd. and final round can't come soon enough.
Haha, yeah I know, it's crazy. I've put in so much time to a game I can't stand 80% of the time. But yeah, I'm from Socal so I've had plenty of 3s experience.how can someone put so much hours in a game like 3s and still hate it.

and the most fun i've ever had at playing videogames is at the arcades. playing various games. and just shooting the shit.
Nightmare: He was my favorite character in the Soul Calibur series and still is. I was always attracted to him because he looked different from most of the cast. Not only did he look different from everyone but his sword did as well. At the time it looked like he was a final boss but was made playable as a normal character. I also enjoyed his moveset which involved swinging around his huge ass sword. I also liked using his giant disfigured hand to punch people and grab with. Just a bad ass character design.
Strider: While I always knew about Strider from the older games, I never thought he would make such a great fighting game character. I loved his playstyle in the MVC1/MVC2 games (and now in UMVC3 he is just as good if not better) where he had both zoning and rushdown capability along with teleports and all sorts of tools. The whole character design itself is pretty awesome but to see it translated so well into a fighting game was pretty sweet. Ouroborus is a classical move in general.
Raven: When he was first introduced in Tekken 5 I thought he was supposed to be a Wesley Snipes/Blade copy (like how Law is a copy of Bruce Lee). After playing around with him he didn't really play like Wesley Snipes/Blade but he had a really awesome moveset anyway. Lots of trickster like moves, phasing in and out as well as some cool looking combos. Was my main in Tekken 5 for the longest time. Some of his moves are just so satisfying to hit like f,f+3, d/f+3 on CH, 1+2, QCB+1+2.
Sub Zero: He was my first character in Mortal Kombat. I saw someone play that character as a kid in the arcades and I thought he was over powered "oh man he can freeze characters! That's cheap! I am going to use him!" The character has evolved greatly over the years in terms of visual design and moveset so its hard to pin point my favorite... I kinda liked Shredder Sub Zero too. Now he plays like a slower zoning type character which is fine. The ground freeze is hella funny too. His freeze into upper cut fatailty is a classic for me.
Dante: Disregarding my bias towards the series and the character... Dante is one of the best designed characters in fighting games period. So much fun to play, so many nuances, extremely versatile, all his moves look great. If I didn't know who Dante was, playing MVC3 I would wonder who the hell he was and which game he is from! As a DMC fan, his translation into a fighting game is near perfect with so many of his moves so well presented. You are always finding something new with the character even if you have played him for years.
Doubt I'll play xrd. It will probably come over really late like always. It's not that much different from r+ and the people who are good at guilty gear will stay good in xrd.
The sadness. Oh well.
