Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Because of what @Feel Like I'm On 42 said here:

its too samey. it doesnt evolve in any meaningful way despite abby being slightly more melee focused. its basically the same game from start to finish.

Which is fine for a short 8-10 hour game. Or even a 15 hour game like TLOU1. But 25-30 hours is pushing it. it got boring towards the end.

also, the game sets up its finale meticulously by having the wulf vs seraph war reach a climax at the end of day 3. the game mostly delivers on that, but ends up continuing for another 3-4 hours at which point it loses all its tempo and sense of pacing. for a story driven game, you cant have it be that poorly paced. especially towards the end.
What game isn’t the same from start to finish????

I’ve never seen a game as perfect as TLOU 2 get negativity lol. EVEN IF you didn’t like the story you can’t deny it excels in everything else.

I replayed HL:A recently but this time I would take an edible half an hour before I started playing....Let me tell you something, I literally forgot that I was in VR for a good time, one of the best experiences in my life lmao.
Half an hour? What kind of super speedy digestion do you have?

Last time an edible had any effect on me it was like after 2 hours, and they were small cookies with 1 gr of hash per cookie so like small fucking bombs:lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Btw while we are talking about gorey melee, you people should try the free betatest of half sword, the graphic is shit and many basic animations are very silly looking but the physically generated damage system, the blood spilling tech and some of the animations are incredible and you have to play it by yourself to understand how good it is, it looks silly in video form

If only kingdom come had this type of damage and animations instead of the theatrical shit it has instead i would play the shit out of it.

On the opposite end of the spectrum fo what I want, relistic gore is just so bland and boring to me, and realistic swordfighting even more so

The gameplay is only realistic if you are damn good dude, majority of us flail their weapons trying to hit shit before getting hit, you think i can do parries like the dude in the video :lollipop_squinting: there is no parry button, you deflect the weapons with the real time movement of the mouse (controller stick in my case)

And ultra realistic damage systems are beyond rare, majority of games have arcadey damage systems, we should praise when a small dev manage to achieve this level of realism.

This is basically a modern bushido blade mixed with exanima control scheme.

I'm super addicted with this game just because of the damage system and violence level, you even have those sound effects ala tlou2 when mofos die, with all the gargling, screaming etc, very cathartic :lollipop_squinting:

welp, a lot of good things in the future

Mega geometry with UE5 looks stunning. So is neural shaders

Black state I didn't know deviated so far from UE5, no nanite or Lumen. The body dismemberments is so cool

Just saw these at R/halflife.
alyx released in 2020
Man i can't imagine what valve will do with the visuals if they release HL3 .

They did this with Source 2, pre-baked and runs on a potato (relatively, 1060 will get you VR experience depending on resolution of headset).

No, I can't imagine what they would do with HL3.

Its still the best looking VR game by far. Sometimes the lighting is almost photoreal.

PLenty of them. Especially nowadays where even action adventure games like Horizon, ghost of tsushima and God of War are shipping with RPG elements allowing you to have builds that change the way you played the game mere minutes ago, let alone 30 hours ago.

Yes, and it was because of those things I gave it my GOTY. I just dont think that a game is above criticism just because it won Goty awards. especially if it has issues that were exacerbated by its length. MGS3 and MGS4 are two of my favorite games of all time and I can write an entire thesis on their shortcomings. MGS4 especially had severe pacing issues due to its 30 minute cutscene interludes.

And I just dont agree with the bang for buck angle. Thats how we got in a mess with games taking 5-7 years to make. Both Horizon and GOW are like 2-3x longer than their previous games, and meh, i wouldve rather had an epic finale than 50 hours of fetch quests.
It’s like greatness is automatically a target for unjustified hate…
Well, we dont talk about shit games so yes, only great games are going to have detractors. If you still think that my hate is unjustified after everything ive said then there is not much i can say to change your mind.

I just watched blank state, what dismemberment are you talking about? When the 2 enemies at the end explode? It looked pretty average as far as gore effects tbh.

The physics, and interaction in combat is great but the animations of the player character are awful. I guess they will improve this at some point?
Hard to say, them being kinda unstable is part of the fun, not sure if traditional animations would work with such a physics based system, the fact that exanima (another fully physics based game) never fixed the character animations kinda tell me that they sre part of the package.

I doubt it's a matter of difficulty, how much hard it can be to have normal walking animations in 2025, i think it's part of the philosophy of the game.

The game is not even available in early access, you can play the betatest for free so they have ample margin of improvements, that's for sure.

All the games that completely rely on physics for their gameplay have wonky animations, just look at this one, the actual walking physics is way more advanced than something like death stranding but it looks silly as fuck

Whats crazy about Black State is that its not using Lumen or Nanite. Its basically an nvidia project by a bunch of dudes out of Turkey.

Good to see ambition still alive in the unlikeliest of places. Sucker Punch, Insomniac and SSM can learn a thing or two from these amateur devs when it comes to going all out.

Huh, that vista looks kinda rough tbh. It screams AA.
yeah, not a good look. Maybe they shouldve spent that cg budget on some artists and level designers instead.

i will never understand this industry's fascination with CG trailers. especially nowadays when realtime graphics have gotten so good. CG especially is very expensive. the 3-5 minutes trailers can cost millions.

The video is almost 2 hours of various topics. Don't know where 4min video was. Or you mean the previous black state video that was circulating a couple pages back?

This is DF's cam capture from CES floor.

Ok i saw what you saw, what can i say, it looks like...ok gore, i'm not particularly impressed in a world where di2\ds remake\tlou2\rdr2 and many other gorey games exist.

If my memory doesn't fail me, it kinda look like outriders gore.

I already hare this stupid fucking tablet and it's not even out yet :lollipop_squinting:

Watch more and more devs having a tablet as baseline because they can renounce to sw2 money.

it is running at 864p on the pS5 pro at 60 fps.

This game was not developed with the switch 2's 2 tflops gpu as the baseline. it will be downported like witcher 3 and hellblade and look like dogshit.

they are already porting everything to the 4 tflops series s. they will just downgrade some more settings to run it on the switch 2.

I'm not as optimistic as you but i hope you are right.

Making 2 completely different version of a game is always gonna cost more than making one version and adding bells and whistles.

this game started development in 2018 after they shipped valhalla. i doubt even nintendo knew much about switch 2 back then.

switch 1 was a massive success and yet practically no one bothered with it. its as irrelevant as the ouya when it comes to AAA games by third party developers. I could name a 100 AAA games in the last 7 years and only around 2 of them got ported to the switch. Witcher 3, Doom, Hellblade are the only games i can think of. No CoDs, no GTA, Red Dead, none of the ubisoft games, no Square Enix or Capcom games. No fromsoft games. Even EA didnt bother porting over their flawed AAA games. Switch 2 will get more games than the switch 1 just like the Wii U did at the start of the gen, but when devs see that no one buys anything non-Nintendo on nintendo hardware, that will dry out too.

but most importantly no one is holding back their games because of the series s or switch 2. if anything the baseline ps5s are already struggling to run these games and you need a powerful pc to run them at 60 fps and high RT settings.

It sounds like the switch 2 will be a more modern Steamdeck. That I believe is 1.7 tflops with an SSD and a better CPU than the PS4 so it can run some modern games. Switch 2 should have slightly better RT and DLSS but DF were already running several next gen games at 360p on the steamdeck upscaled to 720p using FSR. And even then the settings were lower than low.

I am more interested in docked performance but even then im not sure how a 3 tflops handheld can run games Series S seems to be struggling with. Series S is a 1080p console. You dont want to run these games on a 4k display even with DLSS.

I suppose games targeting native 4k on the ps5 like spiderman 2, ratchet, demon souls, gt7, horizon, FF7 Rebirth, etc should be able to run at 1080p while docked. Then upscaled to 4k using DLSS performance. Ratchet actually looks really good on the Steamdeck because well, its like native 4k 40-50 fps on the base ps5 hardly pushing the ps5 gpu. But UE5 games that are already 1440p on the PS5? Or FF16 which drops to 1080p at times? Alan Wake 2 which runs at 1296p? You are looking at 720p docked upscaled to 1440p and god knows what for handheld mode.

I think many devs didn't jumped into the switch boat after the absolute fail of wii U and when they realized that switch was a huge success it was too late because now games take 5 years or more to be made.

Devs are not gonna make the same mistake with sw2 when it can guarantee millions of copies.

I hope you are right but like i always say, we only see the final version of a game, we both don't know jackshit about what devs cut to make a game run on series s or sw2, you can only speculate that nothing was cutted.

I have always been more worried for portable mode over anything else, 1.7/2 TFLOPS is simply not a a whole lot... I actually wonder about the kind of cuts we'll see between modes this time around, going by recent patents they might even choose not to use DLSS when portable to squeeze some extra compute.

Quoting myself because the clockspeeds and thus tflops were just datamined and they are literally 1.7 tflops handheld and 3.01 docked.

I wish i had some actual skill and could predict the stock market, but no my talents are wasted on fucking tflops.

i am sorry but he lost me within the first 15 seconds. Nanite quality details? This guy is delusional.

I love me some days gone. i will defend that game till the day i die but its a good looking last gen game. Thats all. It has nothing on the new UE5 features. not lumen, not nanite. this guy has an agenda against UE5 and its getting him an insane level of publicity but he's a fucking joke.

A better video would be to simply showcase what happens when devs release polished games. There are some wonderfully optimized UE5 games and some shit ones. Same goes for UE4, Anvil, and most recently Snowdrop. Avatar vs Outlaws is like Jekyll and Hyde. Days Gone was at the time one of the least polished Sony exclusive, and the PC port took like 3 more years. Not even a fair comparison.

If he simply frames his videos pointing out devs who no longer believe in optimization, fine. But this UE5 hate campaign is just dumb.
Yes he has completely lost the plot and has gone full grift mode.

But he is right in the sense that gaming graphics has completely lost its ways.
And I know there's alot of people pushing for others to adopt UE5. But that's actually a terrible mistake. UE5 is one hell of an unoptimized engine and rather than optimizing features they currently have they tact in more new ones. Consider that Unreal Engine 4.0 started with around 5GB now its over 37 GB. That scene you are praising (Electric Dream) can barely hold 20 fps at around 1080p on my 4080. That's terrible.

It uses a new feature PCG that is just straight up performance trash.
So yeah he's right, we have truly lost our ways.

Most people have forgotten but there were solutions out there that even to this day looks better than most of the games coming out.
Take a look at SVOGI for example that never got shipped with UE4. Look at how good it is compared to the games released today and i promise you its alot less expensive than lumen.

Remember back then when trailers like The Division were revealed, the best graphic cards was the Nvidia GTX Titan ($1000, 6GB GDDR5, 4.5 TFlop, ancient Kepler architecture).

Yet today only about three games have touched the visual fidelity and the object density of that 11 years old game demo. AW2 and Hellblade 2 touches it. Maybe Avatar Frontier comes close.

This is probably by far the greatest gaming trailer ever produced and nothing comes close and it doesn't use path tracing, ray tracing, mesh shaders, etc.

This exact demo ran 1080p / 30 FPS. Meaning it could easily run Native 4k/~60-90 on console today as it was.
Because the hardware we have today should blow this out of the water. Yet we can barely even touch it and going as low AS ~900p/30 in order to. How is that possible? How far have we fallen?

Pretty sure i ran the electric dreams demo inside the editor at 4k dlss quality on my 3080 where it hovered around 27-35 fps. if i had an executable of it, i wouldve probably run it way better. matrix demo runs very well now after UE5.4 fixed the cpu issues. electric dreams came out on 5.2 when they still hadnt figured out the cpu bottlenecks. give it another shot. 5.5 has actually improved hardware lumen so much that they can swap out software lumen with hardware lumen with no performance penalty on consoles.

i think cry engine is using that software GI technique and we should see that soon in Kingdom Come 2. Pretty sure demon souls is using it too, and yes, its way more performant than UE5. they were getting 1440p 60 fps while Ue5 games can only do 1440p 30 fps. Pretty much 2x more expensive. Starfield also uses realtime GI and looks stunning. it can run at 1440p 60 fps in interiors on the xsx but breaks down outdoors mostly due to poor cpu bottlenecks, and costly shadows.

I do think nanite is probably the culprit here just as much as lumen since that also has a hit on cpu. its a shame no one went back and upgraded their games to UE5.4 let alone UE5.5 because a lot of the performance issues were tied to just how single threaded UE5 used to be.

In regards to Division, I wouldnt be too sure about division running on a single GPU. I recall Richard Leadbetter talking about how the Watch Dogs demo wasn't even running on PC. He heard something so insane, he didnt want to repeat it. My guess is Ubisoft runs those things on supercomputers or server farms which is why they get downgraded even when they come to PC. Played Division on PC recently and it just doesnt look the same. Excellent but that demo was just in a league of its own. Probably running RT effects even back then.

TLOU Part II is absolutely one of the best action / adventure games ever made and I'm more of a "gameplay first" Nintendo mark :p

I've banged my head against a wall enough. RDR II and TLOU II looked like they did because they're products of the very best developers in the industry given endless resources (mainly time and money). 99.9% of other games are hamstrung visually by not having the above. We will only get games that make them look "last gen" when those companies release their new projects.

we have so much power in the consoles and gpus these days and yet nobody pushes the limit and create a big open world with insane draw distance , crowded streets with realistic NPC AI , most buildings to be able to enter them

I dont know if its because of the technology we have right now or because of the devs that are too lazy , or devs that are not lazy but dont have the money to do it

maybe in the ps6/XSX2 era

To be honest most CG trailers have slightly cleaner and more perfect look over real-time graphics. CG allows a more dramatic presentation. Investors and suits at the top want games devs to put their best foot forward to show off their games, these aren’t just games, they are investments by the suits at the top.

Also with Sony games targeting 60 FPS as the baseline on Base PS5, one can imagine if most of those games can run on Switch 2 some way down the line... I bet Spider Man 2 can run on that thing, severely downgraded though, would Insomniac put enough work to build a city without any of the RT goodness? That would require massive asset & art re-work.

Plus the RT in only limited to reflections. If it was RTGI then maybe it would require a massive art rework.

LMAO. Mario Kart looks atrocious. I told you all Nintendo developers dont give a shit about graphics. 3 tflops and this is the best they can do. Just embarrassing.

Most Nintendo studios don't give a shit. Even if you give Pokemon company a 4090 they won't suddenly have Hellblade 2 graphics.

Monolith soft team is pretty much the only studio pushing graphics and we don't know if they won't stagnate either as there's a threshold in graphics fidelity where budgets become ridiculous. This is the team that also helps Zelda team for the graphic engine.

Nintendo will never take the risks that modern AAA studios are doing for insane graphics. They won't pour >$200M into a game for sake of graphics.

I'm not even remotely surprised by MK9. I just hope they have 120 fps by that point though if they leave performance on the table.
