(IGN) Take-Two Boss Unconcerned by Plummeting PS5 and Xbox Sales, Insists GTA 6 Will Cause 'A Meaningful Uptick in Console Sales' in 2025

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch fall 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only, leaving one platform in particular out in the cold: PC.

It’s an omission in keeping with developer Rockstar’s playbook for its previous games, but in 2025 feels outdated. And, given the increasing importance of the PC for a multiplatform game’s success, is GTA 6’s no-show on PC a missed opportunity or even a mistake?

IGN put that question to Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick ahead of the company’s recent financial results, and in his response he teased GTA 6’s eventual release on PC.

“So with Civ 7 it's available on console and PC and Switch right away,” Zelnick said of Firaxis' recently launched Civilization 7. “With regard to others in our lineup, we don't always go across all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms.”

Rockstar fans have noted the studio's historical reluctance to release other past games on PC day-and-date with console, as well as its fraught relationship with the modding community over the years. Still, some had hoped that a game as big as GTA 6 could be a turning point for the studio's PC gaming attitude.

Big Rockstar titles tend to get to PC eventually, but the question of how long PC gamers will have to wait for what could end up being one of the biggest games ever remains. Given GTA 6’s fall 2025 release window, which Take-Two is still confident in, it seems likely PC players won’t get to play the game until 2026 at the earliest.

Mods delete if already posted.

PS5 Plummeting sales?…

The market has changed qualitatively since GTA5. PC players in general are staying on PC, and the double-dip effect is not going to work for them like it has in the past.

No matter what happens, the launch day numbers will be massive so arguing otherwise will look foolish. But they're leaving conservatively 20% of sales on the table not being on PC for launch. Of course a lot of people will buy PS5s to play GTA6, but it's not going to be like previous generations.

I still remember the April 2008 sales for PS3 and Xbox, and they were both around just 200k, if not lower. That was the month GTA4 launched and people expected sales to explode. They didnt. The game sold really well but the people who wanted to buy the game already had consoles at that point.

GTA is much bigger now thanks to GTA online but i still wonder how many people are still playing gta online on a ps4 at this point.

The sales are plummeting because the consoles are too expensive, xbox is dying, and sony keeps porting games to PC. I dont think GTA will fix any of those issues.

Plummeting PS5 sales?

You Lie Harry Potter GIF by Sky

When people post these dumb "takes" there is some idiot out of touch Ubisoft investing beta board member somewhere who believes them. Whoever made that headline(not the OP, but the editor of the actual article) should stop creating sensationalists clickbait trash and live in the real world. Their bullshit has an effect on morons. People call Asmongold a grifter then post horseshit like this.

I hope Elon makes gaming journo AI, buys EGM and starts it back up on Twitter.

I think the coming uptick in console sales is the main reason why we’ve not had the PS5 price drop yet.
it's not.

In an investor call viewed by IGN, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Hiroki Totoki said it's harder to “shrink” the PS5’s die size and therefore cut console manufacturing costs compared to Sony’s ability to cheapen the PS4. “Therefore cost reduction is very difficult, simply put,” Totoki said.

PS5 Plummeting sales?…

IGN’s words despite them not having any figures to suggest so

That stat came as part of a discussion about the current console generation, which has seen sales of the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S — the two consoles GTA 6 launches on later this year

Basically, the usual #sonytoo from IGN

Where is the quote?
Better not be this shit:
Clickbait.

It was probably there to give a little more drama to this passage:

It’s an omission in keeping with developer Rockstar’s playbook for its previous games, but in 2025 feels outdated. And, given the increasing importance of the PC for a multiplatform game’s success, is GTA 6’s no-show on PC a missed opportunity or even a mistake?

Zelnick didn't sound concerned at all, though:

“When you have a big title in the market and we have many of them coming, historically that has sold consoles,” Zelnick said.

“And I think that will happen this year. I don't think tariffs are going to be our friend, but I think there will be a meaningful uptick in console sales in calendar 25 because of the release schedule, not just coming from us, but coming from others. So I'm not concerned about that [console sales falling]. I think the trend that you'd want to focus on is this increasing share of the market that is reflected in PC.”

IGN looking to get some clicks off of a decision that's already set in stone. Even threw in some Sonytoo and "tech experts" doubts about how it will run on the Pro.

Fun times! That was one of the first NPD threads I read here on GAF.

Do console warriors have access to data Sony executives don't have?

Sony said that PS5 sales are down 29% year-over-year in the last fiscal quarter, and it further expects PS5 sales to decrease to 18 million for the fiscal year 2024.

Sony narrowly missed its revised PS5 sales target of 21 million units sold for fiscal year 2023, with 20.8 million units sold. Needless to say, this means that Sony expects PS5 sales to continue to slow, a stark contrast from the pandemic-era shortages that defined the early years of the console.

Sony narrowly missed its revised down target for PlayStation 5 sales. The firm said that sales of its flagship console totalled 20.8 million in the fiscal year 2023.

That’s slightly lower than the revised 21 million unit target that Sony gave investors in February. Prior to that, the company had forecast that its PS5 console would sell 25 million units for the full year.

Sony expects even weaker sales of 18 million units of its PS5 in the year ending March 2025, a company executive said, according to Reuters.

IGN is desperately trying to keep Xbox alive. It’s why they won’t mention games like expedition 33 going to ps5 and why they’ll try to lump Sony in with Xbox and the idea of slumping sales. It’s why they will put up bs articles about a pc you can build for the same price as a ps5 pro that will be as powerful as a ps5 pro. It’s why they put out a video saying Xbox had a better year than ps5 despite so many major games being exclusive on ps5 and none being on Xbox.

The only question at this point is why. Is it just because Ryan mcafferty is a massive fanboy or is Microsoft actively involved? Is it because Sony doesn’t give them as much access as Microsoft? I’d love for details to come out someday.

Another case of the media trying to lump Playstation into the Xbox's hardware, software and exclusive game mess

Getting obvious....

Western media and its dick sucking of Microsoft is the number one reason I want MS out of the video game platform industry.

Go back to shilling Gamepass is awesome and how PS is anti consumer for not coping their suicidal decision

Sony revised their forecast downward and still didn't hit it. They're forecasting further decline for the current period. You can say there's no problem if it makes you feel good.
Yes last year they revised it down from a forecast of having the highest sales of any console in one year ever. Instead they just had top 3.

Of course they revised their forecast downward for the current period, they had their peak year last year. I literally explained this in the post you are quoting. What's so hard to understand? Are you panicking that Nintendo has had a lower forecast every for the past 3 years?

i'm not panicking one way or the other. I just think primary sources are more accurate than forum spin.

Zelnick is talking about combined console sales in total. Xbox Series is tracking farther behind than the PS5 is ahead of the PS4 this generation. We are past the halfway point, unlikely there's an acceleration of PS5 sales at this point in the generation. Switch 2 likely won't run GTA6. Xbox has cratered with Microsoft trending toward publishing and PC/Game Pass. The console space is doing fine (not growing, but still a healthy install base) but Zelnick is getting ahead of sales expectations considering there won't be a PC port for a while.

GTA 4 was the first one to have online though (and it wasn't that well thought out) I'm not surprised it didn't do much. Things are way different now.

Well Sony is ahead in the US when it comes to the PS4. I think the real issue is all the most popular games are still coming out on PS4. The last COD still released on PS4 and all the top GAAS games still work on old gen systems. Has there ever been a time where all the most popular online games still work on old gen systems for this long?

Remember the days when we had video gane magazines . You read a lot of hype and lies but inbetween those you had some hot big titted chicks you could jerk off to.

Now you read an article about stories out of fabios ass and then get pissed about the fake news. No more jerking but a lot of cursing.
