I usually use this for anything vpn/proxy related things. It's free, no trial, no timers, etc.
VPN Gate.
As of now, there is no NZ proxy available though, but there is one active Australian IP.

I'm going to pay someone to first install, and then knock over, some magazine racks at Konami HQ if this shit seriously unlocks at 12pm.

This is the unlock time I get. About 7PM GMT+1. (Might have gotten off by an hour or so, could not select my timezone for the image)

That sucks on ice.

If the free trial there only lasts 20min, would you just be able to use it for the unlock?

I'm assuming you'd need to also need to have enough time to complete the whole download also, but I'm not entirely sure if that is the case.

Actually I'm not sure, I've only ever used fly VPN to unlock an already pre loaded game and only used it to launch it afterwards then I turned it off. Hopefully you only need to use it to start the download and launch it afterwards if that.

You just need it for 30 seconds to unlock. You don't need to complete the download.

Nice, seems like only 2x then. Once to initiate the download and once to unlock. I took the week off so all time is precious.

Looking forward to just roaming around looking for music tapes, lol.

Don't most games unlock @ 10am (PST), at least on steam?

Definitely gonna check out a New Zealand VPN as some sort of unofficial pre-load :p

Not too many AAA games do. Usually those launch at midnight EST or PST.

I think Ground Zeroes released at 10am PST with the Winter sale though.

If you unlock in NZ then download, how does that work - does it get the files from NZ too?

Poor Steam NZ servers are going to get hammered if so.

It has nothing do to with download servers, Steam will only try to pull files from the server you select in settings.

Yeah, by default, but publishers cant opt for a different time. Since it's Valve that has to handle release state changes, though, games don't release on weekends. That's about the only restriction (I say "about" as I'm reasonably certain region-specific unlock times are reserved for particularly popular releases).

If the game unlocks in NZ first and only NZ, it'll be pre-loadable elsewhere and even playable with the help of a VPN.

Then the question is, why would the files be on the selected server if it isn't unlocked in that region yet.

A thing called CDN. All Steam download servers store identical files distributed by Valve's central CDN. If a game is available for download, it is present on all download servers.

Hell why not just unlock it now so I can have a baller weekend. Ps4/Xbox copies got streetdate broken anyway.

In a perfect world, companies would take the initiative. Digital copies should unlock and all physical copies should be given the go-ahead to ship.

Sadly, we live in the real world and I'm going to have to keep waiting until Tuesday. :c

Yeah if the only reason they didn't let us preload is cause of people datamining the files...

People are playing the game on console just give us the game.

Everyone whining about some hours, remember and appreciate that it was brought forward 2 weeks already, totally out of nowhere.

Sure, that's nice and all, but the game being brought forward doesn't preclude a pre-load and the fact that Konami appears incapable of communicating even internally when exactly it will unlock isn't something that should be defended. The situation is absurd.

Yup, it's a shameful showing all around.

I'm gonna invade the shit outta your base btw.....and you'll never know until it's too late.

muahhahahahahah.

assuming you are online that is.

In fairness, the reason they have to do this is because if they allow preload that just means the game gets cracked and uploaded to the torrents by day 1/2. I'm surprised more devs don't take a harder line honestly. Konami has done a lot of really awful shit in its time and generally treat their customers with the blatant disregard of any business that sells poker machines, but this is kinda reasonable.

Although granted they should allow people 12-24 hours of preload at least, not being able to play it on release because you can't hack the DL def sucks.

Games get uploaded to torrents day 0/1/2 even without preloads. Some people have insanely fast internet.

Steam games are only cracked after they've unlocked as pre-load data is and has always been encrypted. Forgoing a pre-load achieves exactly nothing except annoying people who'll have to spend at least a significant chunk of release day downloading data they really should already have.

A preload isn't doing shit for people who crack games. They still can't access shit until everyone else can.

Aren't preload files encrypted anyway? In this case, I agree with you: unlocking on September 1st for me means play the game on September 4st if I'm lucky enough, I have a bad connection and I can't download 28 GB in some hours, only some days.

You know how many times I've seen warez uploaded like a week or two before stores even start selling the games? Too many to count.

I've never seen a Steam game up before its first day of release.

If that's the case then so be it, if you give Konami opportunity to screw something up then they screw it up I guess, not much else to it.

That'd be news to me. I can't even think of one example where Steam was beneficial in helping crackz/torrents before release.

we'll hopefully get some official line on what's actually happening today. that is, unless konami pr are working this weekend too.

i don't mind not playing it on the 31st, but why not just do a staggered midnight launch if you don't want people playing it earlier than 1st sept? why some dumbass arbitrary time like 10am or 1pm?

I don't think we'll hear anything, they'll just unlock it at whatever time it is and be done.

Yep, the Steam unlock time is as official as we're gonna get.
I'm pretty sure they have no idea there are people who are even questioning it.

maybe. depends if they get pestered enough for a clear answer.

they do, considering we've got answers from tora and robert. the problem is that both answers are somehow vague, but also contradictory.

i would appreciate just a straight answer, no "subject to change" "should be" etc four days before release.

How is this not sorted yet? I have a feeling (could be 100% wrong) that publishers need to pay a little extra for the worldwide steam midnight release and Konami was to
fucking
cheap!

update: https://twitter.com/popcicle/status/637204693039452161

in response to: As a New Zealander who wants to be up at 12:00am 1/9. Will steam unlock for us Kiwi's then or?

potentially yes, but official release timing is 10 AM PT 9/1

pack it up guys, new zealand unlock time dream is dead. maybe. possibly. sorta.

if they're going to say 10AM PT is the unlock time (which is fucking stupid anyway), why even tease us with the idea of it potentially unlocking earlier?

So I have to wait until 7 pm to play this on the 1st. Never have I seen a worse prepared launch for such a big game. Really regret buying it on Steam. Think I can get my money back on monday if I cancel it now?

unless you can get your hands on an early copy for another platform and don't intend to double dip on pc later, just keep your pre-order for now. you'll only end up putting more money in konami's pocket otherwise.

it's stupid, but that's the situation.

moved the release date to the 1st, but then totally botch the launch time and the communication of what said time is. one step forward and two steps back.

Everyone whining about some hours, remember and appreciate that it was brought forward 2 weeks already, totally out of nowhere.

How about no. The ability to pre-load large games these days should be mandatory, especially when the console versions get that option. Them doing one good thing doesn't mean we should all act like doormats when they do something else that's shitty.

Is the reason Steam just doesn't release the game timezone at a time when it turns to tuesday 1.9.2015 on that timezone (LIKE ONE WOULD HOPE) but during the regular Steam update time? Which for example in Finland is 8pm

games come out at midnight on steam all the time. global unlocks, regional unlocks. konami is just being awkward and squandering the goodwill earned from pushing the release to the 1st.

the poor messaging doesn't help either. i wouldn't be nearly as annoyed as i am right now if they'd just come out and said that 10AM PT is the unlock time for all regions 100%, instead of dangling this new zealand unlock time over our heads and not giving us a straight answer.

edit: https://twitter.com/popcicle/status/637223119199956992

that is your 100% answer, 10 AM PT 9/1 is official launch

dream is dead.
