Metal Gear Solid V Will not Have a Preload on Steam

With shadow of mordor the game unlocked at midnight but the game was not officially changed to released on steam until 10 am. It could be a similar thing with TPP

For you.
Preloading does more than letting people play exactly at midnight (or whenever) - it also prevents day 1 downloading errors. It lets people spread out their download at their leisure several days prior so that there isn't a crazy, sever-killing surge of people trying to download exactly at launch.

This really sucks, MKX was pretty bad at release because of the 30gb or whatever mandatory patch. I didn't get to play MKX until like 7 am the day it launched, despite starting everything right at midnight. And my internet connection isn't bad.

Preloads for steam games should be the norm. It's frustrating whenever games come out without the option. It should be a no-brainer. MGS:TPP spoilers are already everywhere. No need to keep the PC version from being data mined.
The thing is, Steam preloads have not ever been datamined or cracked. Its literally undestroyable at this point in time . Not allowing preloads is nothing more than dumbness.

The nvidia code is just for the single game, just like every other nvidia code, regardless of any other pre-release bundles or preorder incentives exclusive to a retailer (steam in this case). That is separate from a steam pre-order.

I got FC4 from my 970 purchase, and I had to wait until the normal store refresh at 1pm eastern because it was a promotional offer through nvidia, not a preorder on steam (even though after release, there's no difference).
In this case, there's absolutely no difference at all. Doesn't matter if you got it from a retailer, NVIDIA or the Steam Store. They are all Steam copies and they unlock at the same time.

For reference, here is what the load looked like when GTAV started preloading:

I'm pretty sure MGSV won't be reaching that kind of level even when forcing everyone to on download the game in a shorter period. I'm not even sure how many people will be so focused on playing straight away.

I don't know what to believe anymore :(

The Steam countdown timer is frequently wrong.

It's Valve that has to change a game's status to released and that's what the timer is tied to. Granted, things can and have changed even at the last minute, but Konami not having Valve update the unlock time despite Peeler's comments now being a week old doesn't inspire confidence.

It's a steam copy (via a free nvidia promo code), but not a steam pre-order (purchased from steam directly). Yes it's weird, but there is a difference. It happened with FC4 with my 970. Hopefully it just works for everyone but I wouldn't be surprised if games via nvidia code didn't unlock until 9/1 @ 1pm

Midnight release would be great. Sleep while the game downloads. I can dream of the game, then wake up and play it.

It probably wouldn't be halfway done though.

Most nvidia promo games I've gotten don't act like that. They unlock with the regular unlock. Far Cry 4 promo copies also didn't use Steam.

problem is, I know I won't fall asleep. happened to me with the witcher 3 too. at 4am in the morning I said fuck it and just got up.

I'd like to use keyboard and mouse for those effortless headshots, but we'll see how decent they are. They were pretty good in Ground Zeroes but some parts were definitely awkward using the keyboard.

One of the biggest changes I want in Phantom Pain is that the radial menus work with the mouse, they were really awkward in Ground Zeroes.

I've left the game off my radar for a long time.. but since it's coming out soon and Kojima's last MGS, I've been getting a little excited.

.. But I just remembered that there's no Hayter in MGSV.

mostly unrelated, but TPP has been first on the steam top sellers list since the reviews hit. the hype is real.

I was 90% or so sure I was buying it, but the fantastic reviews made me go ahead and pull the trigger.

Does the lack of preload even matter considering we are getting it a day early compared to console players? Well I guess it is only a day early for those in the US, for NZ's it is right on time.

As for controls, the mouse is so much more precise, but I couldn't figure out all the controls such as special CQC maneuvers. Also, it was annoying to interrogate someone - the number for each question is not shown and I would end up selecting the wrong one because 2 and 3 seemed reverse of what I thought they logically would be...

if everybody wants a solid answer about the NZ unlock time, just tweet at robert peeler. i've been doing it for the last few days but with no luck. maybe one of you guys will get lucky.

I've tweeted at him as well asking if the unlock time was going to change closer to release because it's still set to release worldwide at the same time (1pm ET/10am PT) still. Got nothing.

FC4 was Uplay , thats different. You will see that both Steam Store preorders and NVIDIA codes redeemers will be able to download at the same time.

It still frustrates me on how we can't get a clear answer. Just say something like September 1st 12:00 AM your region or September 1st 12:00 AM New Zealand unlocks for all regions
i think there's probably a reason why they're being as clear as mud on this issue. who knows if it has something with not publicising that you can get the game earlier on pc if you have a pre-purchase, or some kind of politics going on with the consoles and their own digital sales methods.

Or issues with retailers.

For those of us who used Nvidia codes (off eBay in my case), does that early install thing apply?

If the game unlocks worldwide at 12am NZ local time, then everybody will be able to download and play it; if the game unlocks for NZ specifically at 12am NZ local time, then it'll be playable in NZ but only pre-loadable elsewhere (but that's where VPNs come into play). Both ifs are increasing in size, though.

Yes, but that assumes the current unlock time changes for at least NZ, which looks exceedingly unlikely now.
i wouldn't say unlikely. this is such a weird release situation. totally in the air.

tora said this:

And it should be 9/1 for all territories on Steam, minus perhaps Japan where it launches 9/2.

so that throws the current steam unlock time out as it'll be the 2nd in some territories. we're either looking at the new zealand unlock time, or a staggered midnight release depending on territory, or something different altogether.

That seems to be just a matter of time difference. I found this announcement on the game's Steam Community hub and the title reads "MGSV PC version: September 1 (PDT)". JST is 16 hours ahead of PDT.

Seriously. Sometimes I play with a 60% keyboard (no arrow keys) and it's super awkward interrogating and having move my hand off the mouse back to the homerow and holding a modifier as well.

I want the radial menus to work with a mouse, i want the regular menus to work with a mouse, and I want the slow walking button to be able to set to a toggle instead of having to hold it. at the very least let me rebind it.

The number keys are used for interrogating.

What is the VPN to use? I remember using one to unlock Dark Souls II early but I don't remember which I installed.

I guess this isn't too big a deal for me as GMG said the earliest they'll have keys is launch day, so wouldn't have gotten to preload anyways.
