Project M Demo: Smash Bros. Brawl with Melee Gameplay! [Update: Out Now]

Played the fuck out of Melee like everyone else and loved Brawl to death.

This near perfect marriage of the two is making me cream myself, though.

SO.FUCKING.GOOD.

To me, DKCR was unplayable without the classic controller. After playing the first couple of levels with Wii chuk and then using CC, I can never see myself going back.

I feel the same about Wii TP after playing Cube TP. I'll never go back. I'm not going to judge SS without playing it, but I do think I'll get sick of the motion controls after a while.

In conclusion, Project M is amazing.
and hacking crappy motion controls out of good Wii games is justice

I thought the pointer controllers for the bow and hookshot solidified the Wii version as the superior version in my mind.

Footstool jumping is still in. It's just remapped to uptaunt. You can now remap your buttons to any command you want, so if you want to use footstooling, you'll have to remap uptaunt to another button. (If you're using a GC controller, you could remap it to your unused jump button)

SHEEEEEEEEEEEEIT

These guys thought of everything, bravo. :D

Ugh, people like you are what's wrong with games. If SS had to use the CC, it would be the motion controls were shoehorned on to accommodate both control methods.

I'm all for balancing the game, but reverting some of the characters' moves to their Melee counterpart is just...uncalled for. What happened to Ganon's up smash? That was cool! And Game and Watch doesn't need any changes, dammit!

All those pet peeves aside, I fully support this thing. I really like some of the changes they made to some characters. Here's hoping they make Samus fun again!

I saw that this said not to use a PAL version so I'm guessing a JP version doesn't work either?
Apparently they did release a Japanese version but I don't know if it's as simple as using the same installer. Check the IRC the Project M team setup if you need help with it.
http://bit.ly/ihSFfu

All the different download types are up. Installer, and Zip files for Homebrewed, Unhomebrewed and Riivolution users. All the downloads should be stable now.

Also the character page for Lucas was put up recently.

Demo is out today! Hype!

While we wait, I have here some custom music if anyone's interested. They're from the "Smashing Live" CD.

Smashing_live.JPG

DAT MUSIC.

I remember getting that CD in the mail, from my old Nintendo Power Magazine as a Subscription bonus!

I listened to it to fall asleep at night and memorized the entire CD, one day my house got broken into and the jerkoff took my lone CD Case along with that Disc and all my other Nintendo Power Discs and limited-edition stuff I'd accumulated in said CD Case.

So ah, anyone got any actual impressions? Anyone tried online multiplayer?

Tried multiplayer for the first time since 2008, and it's as bad as I remember it. I'm sure it didn't help that I was pressing 6 buttons per seconds vs. Brawl's 2 buttons per second =P

Do the stage hazards/gimmicks in SSB64/SSBM work in Project M? For example, does the flying saucer appear in Fourside, or do different Pokemon appear from the opening in Saffron City?

I get a "Download failed: connecting to host" error message when trying to install. Does that mean that the servers are just being hammered right now, and I should try again later?

If the installer isn't working, try downloading the zip file. In the link I just posted there are step by step instructions for installation and a video. Also, if you need it, there's a support chat linked on that page as well.

My buddy and I played this game for 8 hours yesterday. It's sooo much fun. It's like getting a whole new Smash game again. The metagame that will develop is going to be amazing.

I'm not really that big of a fan of smash brothers, but this project is just amazing:

I've been searching and searching and all I can find is info on why they made the adjustments they did, I really want to know how? Is it really that easy/security that poor to reverse-engineer wii games? Can wii run just any software(programmed for wii) from a memory card?

The fact they can do so much as create new levels and characters is just mind blowing, like they have access to Hal's editing tools or such.

Is this a common problem? Playing project m on my hackless wii works fine but if I want to go back and play regular brawl the system freezes/crashes as soon as I enter the stage select menu - if I take the SD card out of the system it works fine but as long as the sd card is in it crashes everytime.

I don't think that's a problem; I'm pretty sure that's what's supposed to happen.

Well, they've been hacking Brawl for a really long time, and it's received more attention from hackers/modders than any other console game I know of. The Wii has been opened up pretty wide, but it's nowhere near being an open platform.

Yeah that's supposed to happen. It's loading the custom stage they use for the exploit, which makes it crash if it gets confus'd

played it and it's really great. Just loving Lucas' new "Offense Up" up+B its amazing compared to his crappy PK Freeze and it works as Geno's "Boost Up" for my Geno/Lucas skin so extra points there :D. I honestly wish they would do this to Ness too as I main him but I'd understand if they wouldn't.

Edit: derp, yeah like Ben2749 said, its his neutral B that i'm talkin about not his up+B

Been playing for about half an hour, and I'm having a blast. I can't wait for the full release.

However, when I played Classic mode, my Wii froze halfway through the first "Break the Targets" game, and was making a horrible buzzing noise. I couldn't even switch the Wii off by using the power button; I had to pull the plug out. Is this a known issue? Truth be told, I'm only interested in playing Versus in Project M; I just started up Classic out of curiosity.

EDIT: Wow, I just played as Lucas. He's totally different now. So much so, he's to Ness what Luigi is to Mario. For people who haven't played this yet, his standard B is a charge move; if you hold it down for a second, his next smash attack will be 50% more powerful. His Side+B move shoots an ice beam forward, similar to his normal Side+B, but it travels twice as far, and faster. It has very low damage and knockback, so it's not overpowered at all.

Of course, the general changes made to the game engine are fantastic too. Even if you prefer Brawl or Melee, you can't deny that the people being Project M really know what they're doing. The changes certainly mean it's a lot more in line with Melee than it is with Brawl. The pace is a *lot* faster.

brief updated impressions:

Been playing this for hours with my brother (casual smash fan, he hated Brawl) and we both had a blast. Really I knew the game was on point when we started dicking around and laughing at all the shenanigans going on. That's what we've done in every smash game... save for Brawl. The game was just too slow and sterilized; devoid of the chaos that makes smash smash. We would just sit there and play in silence till we decided to stop forcing it and do something non-monotonous.

So yeah, the game's great and enabled me to enjoy smash again with my bro, which was pretty awesome really.

After he left I played some online Brawl and surprisingly found myself wanting to play Project:M more instead. I played as Ganon some and just shook my head at how terrible he was. I played against a competent Toon Link and wanted to gouge my eyes out at how campy and dull the matches were. I played as Meta Knight and frowned at the huge, mindless advantage I had over my opponent. I've played Brawl a ridiculous amount: 13,000 matches and ~1200 hours of match play. Frankly, the game's really not very good. This mod is a welcome breath of fresh air.

Alrighty then, I didn't plan on that rant lol. Anyways specific misc impressions:

- Ganon is an absolute blast to play as. It was difficult not to blurt out "THE PUNCH" every time I landed a fair.
- Captain Falcon is really fun as well. Odd as I couldn't control him at all in melee.
- Link's jab is amazing lol. Jab2 seems to combo right into his dsmash, doing 21 damage. Ftilt is ridiculous as well. He actually has some threats now, great.
- Zelda, Sheik, Snake (not mindlessly overpowered now, yay!) were all great fun, while my brother liked Lucas and Mario the most.
- We both thought falco and fox were pretty dull *shrugs*
- NO STALE MOVES OMG. This is so amazing coming off of Brawl's excessive system that penalizes certain characters more than others, further throwing off balance not to mention directly contradicting the smash "motif" of sending your opponent soaring oh god I'm ranting again.
- L-canceling. I actually don't mind it at all. It's kinda fun really. Chalk that one up as another theory ≠ practice.

Wow that wasn't brief at all. Anyways great work guys keep it up; be looking forward to the full release.

To me, the only bad thing about this demo is that there aren't enough characters (and of course, since I played an earlier build of M, I really wanted to see Bowser and Wario again.) XD

That said though, I loved what they've done so far. It really does a lot to put the type of "free-form" combat that I liked from OG and Melee back in the game, which "vBrawl" did more to try and kill.

So, keep up the great work. I'm looking forward to more.

Legit question: How could you play a game that you described as "not very good" that much? o_O

Just bringing a few facts to everyone's attention, for those who aren't following other PM related websites closely: Zelda's grounded Din's Fire is jump cancellable, while its airborne counterpart is air dodge cancellable. Couple that with wavelanding/wavedashing for a few tricks, I'm still experimenting with it but it's quite fun to do so. Snake can fake out his C4 detonator if you hold B when pressing down B (as in, he'll say "NOW!", but won't actually press the button) and Lucas gets a few invincible frames at the end of a fully charged Offense Up.

I know, right!? I can see Zelda being one NASTY trick in the right hands. I was already having quite a bit of fun running some games on the AI as it is. :lol

Speaking of which, is it me, or does the AI seem to be quite a bit better than it is in vBrawl? A Falcon AI I went up against last night actually did a fairly respectable combo that ended in a knee! :lol

Well in my personal instance me playing the game nearly exclusively for ~3 years (no income, wii only,
final desti*shot*
), sudden significant disability, it being my first true competitive online experience, and me chatting frequently with people who played it kind of coalesced into the perfect storm of "me playing the damn thing too much".

That said clearly Brawl has to have good qualities for me to have spent so much time on it. And it does! I should have been more clear/less blunt with that statement, especially considering how volatile smash threads tend to be :/. In my opinion, Brawl is an ok game. When I measure it against other multiplayer games however I find it to be comparatively far more flawed, and as such relative to that marker I find it to be "not all that great".

It is now time for MY brief and contradictory rant about this demo:

They made the characters fall way too fast. I like the higher speed, but the characters fall like rocks and it is incredibly difficult to recover when you go from the edge to the bottom of the screen in less than half a second. All you see is literally a blur as you go down.

Other than that, I actually didn't notice that big a different between this and Brawl. The new stages are nice (well, the new Zelda one is, I don't really like the changes made to Kid Icarus' stage and the Donkey Kong stage (although it was nice how you can actually notice the graphics of the stage without dying from being left behind)), but it seems if you are not a competitive player, you won't notice a lot of the changes they have made.

Even Ganondorf, apparently the most changed player, didn't seem all that different to me at all. So if you are expecting a whole new experience, you may just have to settle for a change of pace.

But I did think the new Menu graphics were very nostalgic and neat. It gives off the old Smash Bros. 64/Melee feel, which I thought Brawl's new art theme was kinda too bright.

Anyway, here are some atrocious snapshots that I took. I forgot to turn back on the screen filter for the game (I turn it off so it looks sharper on the TV I play it on), and it made the screens look really bad. But I will post them anyway, because thread needs pictures:

This being a demo, I'm sure once the final version comes out, it will be a more worthwhile endeavor.

One thing I really like about the Project M (the demo, at least), is that it doesn't feel like a nerdy fanboy's wet dream, like a lot of Brawl homebrew mods. No shitty character skins, stupid stages, unfitting music that sticks out like a sore thumb, etc. It seems that the designers have went out of their way to keep this as professional as possible, and I applaud them for that.

I saw that there's a Castlevania stage in the works, but looking at the screenshots, it doesn't look out of place, and some thought has gone properly recreating it.

Mods like Balanced Brawl, Brawl+, Brawl-, and PM are basically just gameplay mods, and they're usually completely separate from aesthetic stuff like skins and music. You can use skins and whatnot with PM too :p

Originally I was one of those "If I want Brawl, I'll play Brawl, if I want Melee, I'll play Melee" but after a day of playing this with some friends... I love it. You've converted me.

Even the few glitches we've run into have been fun. Sometimes a random character will get launched off of the screen for no reason but the most consistent one we have is Lucas' final smash. He just doesn't do one so whoever is playing Lucas is always under the most pressure to get it so no one else does. :p

Played this at a friends house yesterday. A great big LAWL about Snake being more tactical. Apparently SHUFFLE airs and nades that almost function as a normal projectile equals more tactical. Timing nades to make your unsafe air attacks safe in one of the basic Snake tactics.

But my real complaint is about GW (my character). So sad. Melee GW is such a nobody character. I have no idea why they'd want to return to that low tier play style.

Overall it was neat. Not any better than Melee or Brawl but an interesting fusion non the less.

GW in Project M is still a bit different. For example, his Down+Smash is actually USEFUL (a la Brawl), and his Melee-style nair is, overall, much more useful than the one they gave him in Brawl. More range, for a solid hit.

The only thing I miss from GW's Brawl rendition is his much better Up+B for more recovery. From my experience, the old problem of how he really doesn't have much to deal with some one like the Space Furries or Falcon/Dorf still very much applies. So I hope they consider giving him that much back. He's already a light-weight as it is.

So is Snake dumbed down or something? Him and Meta Knight were my mains in Brawl. Looking forward to playing this sometime, but kind of annoyed that I have to delete all of my custom Brawl maps that I've created off my SD card and Wii since I made a lot of them. Going to have to get a new SD card.

Okay, just got this setup. Pretty damn cool, and frankly pretty easy to get going on the wii considering it's a hack. Thank god for buffer overflows!

Hope they finish it with "best ofs" of all the characters.

You mean the best things to come out of hacking Brawl. Brawl was a pretty mediocre game I gave up on after a month, but all the hacks brought me back in. Granted, there are some pretty crappy models and levels that have come out of this, but if you spend as much time as I have rounding up the best of the best, the thing is awesome. Not to mention, the music selection is up to you. I'm pretty confident my choices fit the themes of each level and are infinitely better than the overrated soundtrack Brawl used. Also, the custom characters with completely original models with new movesets. The Dante, Naruto, and Cloud ones are amazing - moves that make sense and are styled after the characters that aren't just clones of somebody else's moves. I just want Nintendo X Capcom X Jump X Square to be made someday, and these hacks are the closest it's gotten to it.

This picture is the reason I was so depressed when Brawl came out 8(

Anyway, I'm one of those that likes Brawl's floaty gameplay better, but I really want to try this modification out when it's finished. It sounds awesome.
