Project M Demo: Smash Bros. Brawl with Melee Gameplay! [Update: Out Now]

Wasn't "Project M", Other M's codename?

I fear grave danger for this project.
Samus is being replaced by THE BABY.

When she uses her Final Smash she transforms into THE BABY.

This game is awesome, looking forward to the Pound V tournament vids.

In a couple of years, it'll probably be a reality. Awesome!

This right here is what I expected from Brawl. Bigger and better than Melee, just like Melee was compared to SSB64.

Originally I was one of those "If I want Brawl, I'll play Brawl, if I want Melee, I'll play Melee" but after a day of playing this with some friends... I love it. You've converted me.

Even the few glitches we've run into have been fun. Sometimes a random character will get launched off of the screen for no reason but the most consistent one we have is Lucas' final smash. He just doesn't do one so whoever is playing Lucas is always under the most pressure to get it so no one else does. :p

You think these glitches are bad? Try playing with characters in slow motion. Nothig's as hilarious as floating to death because you mash out Marth's foward B in the air or grab a ledge for an instant KO. (Worst part is now my siblings will instinctively do slow starup moves & Up B's to avoid the already decently avoidable Critical Hits even when I time the slash to hit people early. :( )

How do you activate the team custom texures?
I saw that in the installer, but in-game just got the normal character textures...

Landing detection is fixed. This was a major issue in the sense that it prevented aerials among other things from working as they did in Melee, so it's a pretty big deal.

Anyway, for those who've been wondering but had only followed this through GAF, the reason why the patch for the demo has not been released yet even though it was supposed to is because the team intends to include fixes they just figured out how to do. No new characters, but IIRC we're getting Hyrule Castle.

Is the full project scheduled to release this year?

Oh, come on. If you don't like it, just ignore it. Just because you don't find anything wrong with Brawl doesn't mean everyone else doesn't either. I'm pretty sure it even says something in the OP to not post stuff like this...

Decided it was time to bump this thread (in celebration of Melee's 10th anniversary!)

Progress on Project M has been fantastic. Gameplay mechanics wise, the game is close to perfect. Landing detection has finally been fixed, so the game looks and feels more like Melee than ever before.

Last week, a Project M tournament was held at Genesis 2, a national Melee/Brawl tournament. The build only contained characters that the devs of Project M felt were "near completion, but still may have a few components that are work-in-progress."

These characters are:

Wario
Mario
Luigi
Bowser
Donkey Kong
Captain Falcon
Ganondorf
Falco
Fox
Ness
Zelda
Sheik
Link
Toon Link
Lucario
Jigglypuff
Charizard
Squirtle
Zero Suit Samus
Marth
Ike
ROB
Game and Watch
Snake
Sonic

The following videos have been released to outline some of the major changes to certain character movesets:

Lucario
Charizard
Bowser

You can also find some matcheshere.

I probably missed something ... but isn't this about getting brawl as close to meele as possible ?

I'm don't play meele in a long while, but i really don't remember Bowser having some of those stuffs like heavy armors and things like that

Project M is trying to replicate Melee where it matters most: the gameplay mechanics. They are not trying to replicate the poor balance that Melee had so that means they have to get creative with the low tiers and new characters so that they can compete with the likes of Melee Fox, Falco, Marth, Sheik and Jigglypuff which have been left exactly as they were.

I've been following this project from the very beginning on SmashBoards and the progress they have made is just incredible. Even comparing the newest videos to the demo is like night and day. It just looks so smooth now.

I'll admit, that Charizard stuff is cool.
I haven't played P:M since that first release, and only then it was about 30 mins.
I'll definitely play the next major release... hopefully for longer.

Those trailers are some impressive work, but also some very radical changes, like they're trying to make more of a sequel now.

Makes me eager to see news of the 3DS and WiiU Smashes.

[Stupidly big roster]

Did anyone seriously expect anything near this many? It's completely unrealistic and most of the character choices in there are ridiculously unworthy of being playable fighters. It looks like a parody of fanboy mock-up rosters. Also, that many combatants on a stage at once would be a huge clusterfuck.

Thank you for bumping this thread, I was unaware of this project but will now work to get it installed in my Meleecube.... Wii post haste!

My main problem with mods like this is that eventually they'll have to tweak characters, and I don't really trust fans doing this, especially with their biases.

This isn't something like Oblivion mods.

When it comes to Smash and balance, I have a lot more trust in fans that extensively play test with top players than Sakurai and his team.

The Project M team has already stated that they will not be constantly tweaking things after release unless something gamebreaking is discovered or a character is seriously underpowered. They want to let the metagame develop. Even then, these things probably wouldn't be changed without extensive playtesting.

I dunno, still peeved about it in other Brawl mods where they kept status quo of top tiers in Melee.

Dang, thought the full thing was released. I want the full thing! :(

At least Brawl / Melee never gets old. I just want "new". The new Charizard looks great though. I never liked Pokemon Trainer because of the trainer in the background and having three playable characters. This looks to be one of the best changes for M.

Uh... what? Smash has always been four characters at once.

Well which other mods are you talking about?

Brawl- is deliberately broken and not meant to be seriously.

Balanced Brawl keeps Brawl's style of play but tweaks certain things for a more rounded cast of characters.

Brawl+ changed far too often and didn't last long enough for a solid tier list to really form.

He's referring to the image above with 8 players at a time.

I forgot what it was (I think it was Brawl+), essentially I was peeved that they made huge changes over characters but kept Wolf a bit shitty.

Yeah man, I was wondering why classic Nintendo characters like Hulk and Vader weren't in Brawl, as well.
:lol Seriously, there's just so much wrong with that fake roster.

Anyways, on topic, this mod actually sounds cool. I might get it just for Saffron City. :D

Is there a public update beyond the original release?

I actually may try this out later tonight! Been waiting for Project M for what seems like forever, so it'll be nice to finally play it. Any bugs or problems with this yet?

Will an updated demo be released soon?
Unfortunately there isn't a scheduled release date for the updated demo. It's kind of on a "when it's done" sort of schedule.

Here's what Project M lead developer and team lead Shanus had to say about it recently:

Shanus of Smashboards said:
The truth is that the concept of a patch is no longer really the same as we had first intended. Long ago, we had formulated the concept of a patch to address a few minor issues, but thats when we had a lot of success with some cutting edge codes. From there, we just kept on developing more and more while the new developments rolled in, and the patch evolved from simple tweaks to a complete engine overhaul.

The truthful answer to all of your questions is that there really isn't going to be a "patch" anymore, but simply put, a complete new version. The next iteration of Project M will be when we feel all the major gameplay bugs are resolved, and anything we feel is complete/show-worthy is included. This does not guarantee any new characters, but it doesn't mean we won't include new ones either. Given our rapid character progress, you can guess that I'm being conservative in my delivery, but you get the point.

There are a few minor bugs in the current demo but nothing that will seriously hinder the game. Keep in mind that the demo was released in February and that development has come a long way since then. The demo is great fun but take it with a grain of salt since the game will play much closer to Melee in the final product or updated demo.

Why get rid of Pokemon Trainer in the background? I understand wanting Squirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard to be playable separately, but Red being there doesn't hurt. If anything, he gives context to the Pokemon being there, since obviously none of them would have made it into the game by themselves.
And what if people want to be able to switch between the 3 as in the original game? That is the whole idea of the character after all.

Then play Brawl or one of it's many mods? The Charizard video perfectly explained why they were split: so they could further develop each Pokemon. Cutting the gimmicks like the stamina system and switching on death for 3 new well rounded characters sounds like a damn good trade to me. Also, due to technical limitations, each Pokemon could not have a new Down-B if Pokemon Trainer was kept.

You're probably right that these Pokemon would not have made it into the game by themselves but they're far more iconic to any long time Pokemon fan than Pichu or Lucario so I don't really see the problem here.

And conversely, what if people just want to play 1 or 2 of the Pokemon without having to switch? I hate Ivysaur but I love using Squirtle and Charizard.

That makes sense, but would it be possible to have Pokemon Trainer as a separate option on the character select screen if someone wanted to play that way?

This was originally how it was planned to work and how it worked in another mod as well, Brawl+. You could select Pkmn Trainer and when your Pkmn died they would switch automatically. You could use Down-B to switch as well. When selecting the individual Pkmn, they would not switch on death and Down-B did nothing.

However, this can no longer happen since the team is planning to give each Pkmn a new Down-B. I could be wrong but I think the reason for this is because the game loads the same character files when you select a Pkmn or Pkmn Trainer. Any changes made to these files affect both characters. So giving the individual Pkmn new Down-Bs erases Pkmn Trainers switch Down-B. The choice was to either expand the move set of 3 new characters or keep Pkmn Trainer as he was who would've been extremely difficult to balance anyways.

Keep in mind that all of these changes are still experimental and everything is subject to change.

I wonder if they could bind taunts to switch Pokemon. That would actually be a better system because you could choose between the other 2 Pokemon and still have a spare input left over for a taunt.
