Resident Evil 4 Remake |OT| Welcome back stranger! What are you RE-buyin'

WHAT? Resolution mode runs at 60? Christ. I did my entire first playthrough on performance. I already turned those other settings off too.
lol i was telling everyone this in the demo and DF threads. Nx gamer found that with rt, chromatic abberation, and hair off you got very close to a locked 60 with drops to 55 fps during intense action but if you turn off motion blur and depth of field you could gain slightly more performance.

Village during the day and especially during the rain is the only time you will notice dropped frames. But other than that most of the game is set indoors, small arenas or in corridors where the game isn’t taxing the gpu as much as the village levels. On pc, i ended up turning on hair because i noticed my gpu sitting at 70% utilization once i got to the castle.

Man, that Krauser fight! I wasn't a big fan of the OG, the timer sucked the life out of the fight imo but here, oh man is it fun, I wanna actually fight him knife only with Perfect Parries etc

I just started my first playthrough (PC version) and made it up to the beginning of the castle. I've never beaten the original game. So far, I've experienced some frustration as I haven't gotten gud with the parry system yet and the aiming feels a little janky especially compared to the DS1 Remake. The stealth mechanics have been pretty pointless for me so far, and Ashley has been a huge pain in the ass during the limited time I've had her.

Movement feels a bit "off" too - Leon doesn't feel super responsive to me for some reason. He has momentum to his sprint and takes a split-second to "get going" or stop. Right now I find myself playing him like a game with tank controls. Re3 Remake controls waaaay better in my opinion so far and I miss Jill's dodge mechanic tremendously.

I feel this game has a way higher learning curve than Re2 and Re3 Remakes, which I pretty much breezed through. I've probably died 7 or 8 times so far and I've been close to dying A LOT - I'm only playing on Normal. Most of my deaths occurred in that "trapped in the building" scenario or Ashley deaths. I hate that enemies sometimes randomly spawn behind you and the offscreen ranged attack enemies can seriously go fuck themselves.

All this being said - I'm having a hard time putting this game down. Despite my frustrations, it's so much fun. Also, it looks beautiful and runs flawlessly for me unlike DS1 Remake which has been an absolute bastard to optimize on my PC. I think once I start getting the hang of the mechanics things will get even better.

Actually on that note about how improved Krausers character is, Saddler so far has barely been in the game, in the OG is taunts Leon for most of the game, in this, I', on Chapter 15 and near the end of the game and he's only met Leon, what twice? Thats a bit of a misstep tbh

I'm fine with it. Looking back on it, it was pretty dumb that Salazar and Saddler somehow contacted Leon on his com, and basically taunt him over and over. In the Remake you don't actually meet Saddler in person til late in the game, but Leon sees him in visions, and only hears about him in passing. So there's a degree of mystery surrounding him. It also allows each Act of the game to give the Act Boss more of the spotlight. Bitores Mendez, Salazar, and Krauser, with Saddler as the Pupper Master. For us who've played the OG, we know who Saddler is and so we're wondering where he is. But for newcomers, I think this new approach is more effective.

Yea true, maybe its just being so used to the OG

Anyway, I'll be finishing this tonight, near the end of Chapter 15 now and RIP Mike, that Frozen Room with the Regenadors in the Bags can fuck right off though, that sucked to get through

Is it weird I purposely capped the game 60fps so I didn't have to hear my 3060 Ti fans struggling for their lives at 120fps. also according to GPU-Z 60fps cuts the board power draw in half.. well I guess that makes sense :messenger_grinning_smiling:
anyhow RE4 feels fine at 60fps and I'm usually a high framerate snob.

On chapter 9 as of lastnight (hardcore diff) and loving this remake :messenger_ok:

Ada has a cold hearted voice. Very to the point, no emotions, and etc. They made her attractive for sure.!
when Wesker says “billions”. I’m thinking “Ada probably thinks he’s a psychopath or she’s ok with millions of people dying, but not billions”.

I wonder if they’ll release an unlock all DLC like they did with RE2/3:R’s. Unlocking stuff is fun and first playthroughs are great, but it has its limits. I finished RE3 on Hardcore and I also had the unlock all DLC. I had a lot of fun and I didn’t exactly work for the weapons I used. I had fun playing the standard difficulty because it feels familiar. It isn’t too easy and it’s not impossible. I like difficulty like the souls games, but something about replaying with an OP weapon or special weapon is fun. Now I gotta skip cutscenes and rush the game just for the rating just to get a secret weapon. I’ve got mixed feelings about that too.

I started my 2nd run on PS5 and I also started a run on my Steam Deck. I like my progression on PS5 a lot more because of obvious reasons. I wish I could transfer my save.
I definitely think the RE4R went a bit more into Ada's psyche/morals concerning her line of work besides RE2R. She is inspired by Nikita afterall and Ada's backstory is unknown in the games but there was a comic about her and why she's this way. Kind of like in Naruto Shippuden with the Anbu Black Ops being integrated into training from childhood and not being allowed to showcase emotions because it is taught it is a sign of weakness and what can get you killed. Despite that I notice that Leon has an effect on her as she begins to think twice about what she's doing and how that affects others. Initially for her, it's just a job and she even says so in RE2R, so not allowing her emotions to get in the way or questioning the motives of someone she's working for isn't normal for her and I love how in this remake you can clearly see more of that and her character development because of Leon's influence on her.

I also like how Leon is well composed and not so easily trusting of Ada despite his feelings for her. He's like you fooled me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. It's not going to happen again. Though Ada teasing or maybe she was for real about a proper greeting another time, lol.

Ada and Leon are the opposites of each other like hot and cold as depicted by their colors which has Leon typically wearing blue and Ada typically wearing red, though perhaps poetic into their complex relationship.

Been following powerpyx to see how far I can get towards plat... I just beat my 3rd sweaty ng+ infinite rocket launcher no-heal speedrun on professional and I think I'm done. Reloading after taking tons of damage with every hit, from main menu to reset the timer, with no checkpoints broke my balls.

Maybe I'll get back to it for a raw new game professional after getting up to speed when the DLC drops but I don't think I'm up for speedrunning the campaign 3 more times. Absolutely hate the fact S+ ranks don't stack.

I do respect Capcom for creating real challenges in the game to chase if you're into this sort of thing.

I loved my first playthrough tho a ton so still a strong 8/10 for me and easy top 5 of the year

I just completed NG+ on Professional and didn't get the Handcannon, dafuq? What a waste

Someone said in the Steam Forums that the egg is considered a bonus weapon and I did that painting quest in this playthrough... fuck...

Village's endgame is way better than this one.

Man, for the first half of this game I was pretty confidently preferring the Dead Space remake… but the more I play RE4 the better it gets.

Just started Chapter 14, and I think I might put this above Dead Space. And I LOVED Dead Space.

So many damn good games this year. I’ve played Hi-Fi Rush, Hogwarts Legacy, Dead Space, and now this, back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

We’re spoiled.

My thoughts exactly. They improved the castle section so much, it's unreal. The castle in the original was easily the worst part imo. In the remake, it's on par with the other 2 sections. And I too did acknowledge the little nods here and there towards the initial RE4 beta versions.
WHAT?! The castle was easily my fav part of the original game! Loved the enemies. Loved the areas. Loved it all! I feel they cut out far too much in the remake from the castle for my liking.

I loved it too in the original.
they made the new one more grounded, still good, but I liked many parts of the original that were cut here.

the original castle was too "gamey" I guess...

And done on Hardcore!

The last boss is pretty much the same as the OG but with Ads, I bought a Rocket Launcher beforehand but wanted to do it legit first time, and it was easy as fuck, then thought fuck it, did it again with the RL, even easier lol

Anyway, what a fantastic game, I cannot wait for more DLC if that is coming and the Mercenaries mode is always fun, maybe I've save that for the Steam Deck at some point though

Fair enough. I just loved the tone of the castle area plus, it has the water area! I LOVE that area in the original! I think they stuffed it up a bit in the remake sadly. Not as tough or as tense.

You have to beat Professional on a Fresh New Game. You can't do NG+

Almost forgot, the El Gigante battle in the castle is also really bad design wise. Throws rocks every few seconds on loop. Probably one of the worst things about this remake. So boring, so bland and so unimaginative. Get rid of it and no one would miss it.

Getting close to the end, think this is a masterpiece, as with the original.

One regression I think is the sound design. Original OST was super memorable, this barely has any music and none of it's stuck with me.

Regenerators also don't sound nearly as scary, and the merchant voice is decent but no way near the original.

The movement and camera alone makes it better. It's part of the identity of the original, but it certainly doesn't stack up well against today's standards (especially considering RE2 and 3 Remake). Quite frankly, RE4 original feels like crap when I try to replay it these days. I never had any doubt, especially with Capcom's recent stellar track record, that RE4 Remake was going to be better than the original.

There's no "better or worse" when it comes to the controls. That's personal preference. The original was purposely trying to maintain a degree of classic survival horror with its slower style of 'aim and shoot' movement. It was perfectly balanced within the confines of Re4. Enemies moved slower too. They wanted you to be able to kite the enemies into groups. They wanted you to still feel overwhelmed if you didn't position yourself correctly.

The remake changes the entire rhythm of gameplay. You are more mobile bit thats not necessarily better. If anything Leon's movement is LESS precise. Enemies move faster and bum rush you to maintain balance with Leon's movement.

Arguments can be made for either game but it kills me to see the original deemed "archaic" or "worse" when it's simply different.

Really? Ugh, my mistake then

Should've rushed things to get the Typewriter... too late
Sorry bud. But think if it this way, doing Professional on a Fresh NG is it's own challenge, so even though you have to playthrough again, the challenge should be fun in it's own right.

Just an FYI if ever you decide to go for S+ Rank on Professional to get the Infinite Ammo accessory, you have to do Professional on a fresh new game, beat it under 5.5 hours, and you must limit yourself to 15 saves or less. But! You can use Bonus Weapons you've acquired.

Are you guys doing all the sidequests? I've cleaned up everything but 1 in the village so far and tried to collect every treasure but not sure if it's worth it.

Edit: scratch that, I left a bunch of trasure behind in the abandoned factory and valley, rip me

Anyone struggling with the parry ? Next time you come across a single enemy just spam the LB button and try taking them out with parry and melee only. It will help drill it into you to use.

Also just want to say what the hell was Capcom thinking with Ashley's commands ? The original were just fine , but they replaced "wait" command with "stand back" , which sucks because she still follows you 15 or 20 feet behind . In the original you could just tell her to "wait" in a safe area where you know they won't spawn. At least you don't have to use healing items on her in this one I guess.

Other than that it's been awesome. Milling my way through the Castle.

So RE4 or DS1 ? Loved both of the originals. Have just time/money for one of those for the time being.
DS1 remake is not even remotely comparable to the monumental game Re4Remake is.
Just in size n amount of content alone RE4 is a different beast.
Capcom really nailed this one
Just be ready, it is fucking relentless

both GIF

But if money is tight, you'll get more bang for your buck from RE4, Dead space is also beginning to go on sale, so you'll get a very good sale after you're done with RE4 most likely. RE will take a while to be on sale still.

Holy shit the cabin fight with Luis is no joke in hardcore, constantly running out of ammo. Got killed by the cowhead dude in the first try

I actually have the original games soundtrack on CD (remember those things? They were physical media you could listen to your music on)! I purchased an official Resident Evil 4 art book (it is my fav game of all time) and at the back of the book was the soundtrack to the game! Love it!

I listened to the original soundtrack on one of my speedruns, but it actually made me miss the Remake's soundtrack. It has some bangers for sure.

Stingray or Cobra?

Heard people say the Cobra isn't worth it because it consumes too much ammo.

That was my feeling as well. I prefer the Stingray because it already has a decent fire rate, and you don't come by nearly enough Rifle Ammo to justify the amount the CQBR burns through. Although I have heard a fully upgraded CQBR can do crazy good burst damage to a boss's weak point.

Hahaha spent what felt like an hour fighting the chainsaw twins only to shoot ashley by mistake after I killed the second one. I love this game.

i used red9, riot gun, & sr m1903 rifle. i only upgraded/maxed red9. always fill jeweled items with mixed color jewels if possible. try to get the 20% rocket launcher price reduction charm from the shooting gallery (i did). &, of course, scavenge everything. i was able to buy the infinite launcher in my second playthrough during chapter 6...

Dang, just arrived in chapter 7 and I only have around 850k pesetas, despite picking up every single treasure in the Village section. You somehow doubled that, if you managed to buy the thing for 1,6 million in chapter 6. Or did you bring a lot of cash/treasure with from your previous playthrough?

i brought cash/jewels from a previous playthrough. aside from maxing out the red9 & the briefcase, i spent very little, & had a pretty good amount (i really took my time & scavenged everything i could)...

Infinite rocket launcher on Professional mode after my last crazy run is wonderfully cathartic lol 💥

Just got it myself on Professional (NG+). I’m not going to stress myself out going for a S+ rank, but I did want to beat Professional once, and I just got enough money to get it in Chapter 7 (helped by selling everything except my infinite knife, and then rebuying a basic Red 9 for puzzles that require aimed shooting and the basic Stingray particularly for the part where Ashley has to turn the two wheels.

Ah, that explains it: I maxed out the Sentinel Nine, Riot Gun, Stingray *and* Bolt Thrower in my first run, so I went into my current run beyond broke.

EDIT: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: y’all are sleeping on the Sentinel Nine. Easily the best all-round handgun, with decent damage, a large clip, the laser sight, and 5x crit chance.

This remake is superb but I think they screwed up few things, my beloved suplex is gone, I think also much more depth could have been given to the melee system with more moves and more king fu style, now is just kick and kick and kick and seems always the same and only move, very disappointed. Also one memorable boss fight is completely gone now (why?). Really sometime I don't understand developer choices

Leon performs different styles of kicks, but also an over the shoulder judo throw, suplexes, knife parries, knife break attacks, a variety of knife attack animations, and backflips. I think he technically performs different styles of moves than the Original. He doesn't punch, that's Chris Redfield's thing.

I'm on my 3rd run, could buy it right from the start by selling off everything else. 1st run I found every single treasure and fully explored, 2nd run was a sprint picking up every treasure along the way, this was enough to buy it at the start of Professional, I'll rebuy other guns for certain sections if need be 👍

When I beat the OG RE4 years ago, I immediately thought that it was a top 10 game all time for me. Then I didn’t enjoy another RE game as much as that since RE2 remake(even though I absolutely loved RE7) and it had me wondering if anything would top RE2 Remake and if I played RE4 again if I’d think as highly of it the next time around. When I started this game, I was really enjoying it, but I gotta admit I was thinking in hindsight I don’t like it as much as RE2 even though it was still great. But I think once you get to the castle is when this game goes from great to all timer. And thinking back on it I think I felt the same way about RE4 original as well.

I’ll see how I feel once I finish it this time.

Does anyone else notice some blue and yellow "blob" like flickers on the bottom of the screen? It's bizarre. Only noticed it right now. Looks like disco lights lmao I'm so confused. Yeah green as well. PS5 btw.

Ok so I went back to the main menu, changed some settings and it looks like it's gone now... weird.

Finally finished.

I think that except for bittorent mendez and krauser, they made all the other boss fights worse, saddler was an absolute chump.

Final score between 7,5\8, some things are better in the vanilla, some are better in the remake, but i just didn't had the same fun playing this one in 2023 compared to the fun i had with the vanilla back in the days, if that make sense, and i just don't reason a lot with japanese animations\combat when it comes to shooters.

Didn't had any problem with the aim (hell i had an average of 80% precision) or controlling leon except for being tanky in a relatively fast paced action game but that's how the game is designed and i generally prefer heavy controls over floaty ones.

The suplex def isn't gone, it's just super strong so you have to work a bit harder for it; just run behind them to perform the melee after dropping an enemy to their knees. First thing I tried tbh.

Also there is a way to stagger enemies so they drop to their knees while turning around as well; I'm not sure if it's rng or requires a specific sequence (leg first then head?)

I also just finished the game on Hardcore last night. It's an amazing game, probably replaces the original ( because I've played the original so many times ). Thank the maker Capcom didn't drop the ball on this one. So many highlights, a few things missed but over all it was brilliant.

So the stuff I didn't like. To be honest, not a huge fan of the knife parry. I think they nerfed weapon power across the board to compensate. The fully upgraded default handgun with X5 crit wasn't doing anywhere near the damage / head pops of the original on professional. Most of my playthrough I was feeling underpowered, fighting bullet spongy enemies. It's a design choice that works, and I can see how people love it, I just miss the originals simple solid gunplay. Some cheap ways to make bosses difficult (Saddler fight.... what a drag) and they really screwed up the Regenerators. Not scary at all. But, the Island was much improved, loved the stealth mechanic, beautiful graphics and map design. This was way better than I dared hoped it was going to be. Good job all those rumours of stalker enemies was bollocks.

I'm starting a new playthrough on standard to try and grab all collectibles and get the shooting range stuff done. I also bought the dlc map with extra treasure as that was really fun. I think I'll enjoy standard a bit more - I'm hoping for greater bullet impact and less relying on the parry. It's a shame a lot of unlocks are based on speedrunning as that something I've no interest in doing.

Now bring on the Remake of Remake!
